Episode #748: Logan (We ❤️ Movies)

“Get your boners ready!” - Steve, on Xavier and Wolverine looking like their cartoon counterparts in more recent MCU films

On this month’s patrons-only We ❤️ Movies episode, we’re chatting about a truly fantastic comic book motion picture, James Mangold’s Logan! Could Marvel go back to the comic book panel flip intro instead of using images from their films? It’s correct in saying that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is the best comic character performance of all time, right? Is Logan working for some kind of limousines-only Uber service? How great is Boyd Holbrook— in this movie, but also like, just in everything? And how clutch is all the violence and profanity in this film? PLUS: Fair warning, there’s some brief talk about New York geography— brief!

Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal, Quincy Fouse, and Richard E. Grant as Dr. Rice; directed by James Mangold.

Be sure to snag your tix to see our next Worldwide Digital Event on 7/18 where we'll be talking about the action masterpiece, Speed!

Episode #748: Logan (We ❤️ Movies)

Comments

In the comics X-23 only had her claws coated in adamantium.

Matthew Lloyd

"Pica- Uh, Captain- ..... No." Had me dying for some reason.

Tanner

Honestly I thought the clone wolverine was abit weak, would've preferred if they used Daken but that being said it would've been a pain to make it work but if they did god it would've been beautiful

Connor Lukee

Solid Ranking! My only blindspot is Dark Phoenix

Robert Calvillo

The idea that Marvel comics exist in the Marvel universe as licensed adaptations of actual superhero adventures is a surprisingly old bit of lore; in one of the early Kirby/Lee comics, Doctor Doom visits the Marvel offices to strong-arm them into giving away the FF's location. There was a fun She-Hulk run in the 2000s where she used the comics as evidence in legal cases. Anyway, I always loved that goofy concept and I love the way it's used in Logan.

Shaenon Garrity + Jeff Wells

Girlfriend wanted to watch Logan last night, Patrick Stewart is so good in it.

Kureigu

i'm guessing they're gonna do the crow next month

Joe

What are y’all’s favorite dad-mad moments in film? Without using Hugh Jackman

Nicholas Young

I would imagine Eric would suggest it's a fringe benefit for joining to give them extreme gooning abilities.

Jason

Hell yeah

Will See

I need validation, the Reapers all have robot hands because the mutant kids were looping them off right?

Shamus R McClelland

Yes! One of the few video games ever written to be funny that was actually funny. Hilarious game with several great performances, although Merchant really stands out. That game’s also surprisingly deep and deals well with pathos. Big recommend for anyone who’s never played it. It’s a true classic.

IAR

Stewart deserved at least an Oscar nomination for this role. He really crushed it.

Michael Daniels

Black and white? Mister, I was born for it!

Nathan Lemire

Now I'm wondering what the fellas best-worst of the subreddit is?

DMAC

Damn dude, those top 3, while I agree with them. Really you could flip that order any which way and you wouldn't be wrong either.

DMAC

Slumped don't mean dead...

DMAC

My bemusement primarily comes from the utilization of the aesthetics of a revisionist western for Logan. There's been a lot of ink spilled when discussing the sub-genre of revisionist westerns and I don't think it's necessary to write a novel about it here, but to simplify: the genre is foundationally interested in subverting genre expectations in order to illicit a critique from the audience of their (the audience) relation to both genre and our own history and principally to question how western films have papered over or obscured our collective past. This however doesn't work for Logan so the aping is just that; lifting of an aesthetic only as the critique doesn't apply to the super hero genre and can't transfer over. I feel the need to re-iterate that I really like Logan, I just don't think it "works" for lack of a better word and that's why the praise bemuses me. Not that I think people should be hating it, just that it's so odd to me to apply revisionist western genre conventions to super heros as the underlying critique doesn't fit.

Comrade Trash Panda

Last Stand had to crawl so that Logan could run

Smaug

Stephen Merchant, also great and hilarious as Wheatley in Portal 2

Smaug

Are you similarly bemused by the praise Star Wars receives? Why not just watch the westerns and samurai flicks it's aping?

Smaug

Great ep! WLM August is The Crow. Bet.

Dave Funk

I just had covid and did the X Men rewatch. Start to finish. This was an amazing movie.

Meghan McGehee

The only approved use of AI should be to remove Ricky Gervais from Extras. The scene when Merchant is doing blow in the bathroom stall but his head can peak over the top because he’s like 7 feet tall is so good.

jribs

I'd flop Logan and Days of Future Past, I've got no idea where those Deadpool movies would go, and I haven't seen New Mutants, but I think otherwise this is pretty much my order! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

It’s definitely THE NEGOTIATOR that has the SHANE scene. Here is the clip when they talk specifically about the ending of Shane: https://youtu.be/7BmsmfBK4nQ?si=uCd6DF4XS7IACb60 The SHANE conversation then plays a role in the ending of THE NEGOTIATOR: https://youtu.be/MZhNDpll2Vg?si=xqpwneRQfD8ylv5M

Michael Mora

Oh dude thank you - this has been noodling in my brain for days now

Stewart Ward

Anybody else watch Logan along with this? Works pretty well.

Pete

Absolutely. I struggle to even call this a superhero movie. Really the only context you need is what Wolverine and Prof X's powers are summed up in a single sentence.

Taco6N 13

He's also pretty amazing in the game Portal 2 as Wheatley...along with JK Simmons as Cave Johnson.

ProcHoliday

Great movie, great episode, great time. Looking forward to the X-Men 2000 episode later this month.

Scmods

I know you guys absolutely do not care about a near 40- year old man's X-Men rankings. But I just watched 13 f'in movies so here you go! X2 Days of Future Past Logan X-Men 2000 Deadpool First Class Deadpool 2 The Wolverine Apocalypse Last Stand Wolverine Origins Dark Phoenix New Mutants

Kyle Godown

Niagara Falls

RaggyB

Love this movie and love listening to you guys talk about it. Patrick Stewart impressions will Never get old.

Zerox

Chalk another one blown away by Steve's Fozzie Bear impression! Frank Oz-level performance there, Steve!

Ian Baird

I’d love to show Logan to my girlfriend because I think she’d really enjoy it, but she has a real disdain for superhero movies. Would it work for her with no context? Is there a bare minimum of X-Men or previous Wolverine movies she could catch up on?

David Allen

I believe the “Shane” conversation happens in A Low Down Dirty Shame. I think Jada’s character was obsessed with it

shaka

I honestly think about, "But it doesn't matter... because I've already seen everything" at least once a month. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We just wanted to talk about Logan. It was long on the schedule before Chris couldn't make it. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Well, I'd just say, if I want to watch Unforgiven, I'll watch Unforgiven, or any other Western for that matter, if I feel like watching a Western. If I want to watch a new spin on something and also wanna feel those comic book vibes, then yeah, Logan is gonna get put on. I think it's okay to watch "neo" iterations of things. I certainly wouldn't discount all the great Neo-noir that's been made over the last 50 years and just put on something from the '40s. I think there's room for both ends in my viewing habits. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Idk what I love more, the collective Patrick Stewart impression or their Gerard Butler! 😂

Dennis Stack

“I’ve seen everything. I’ve seen it all.”

Craig

There's no Irishmen or Captain Marvel de ageing technique for X24, everything from the neck up is CGI replacement and the actor is Jackman's stunt double.

Wesley

If you guys get a chance, Boyd Holbrook was in this fun time travel film called In The Shadow of the Moon. Check it out.

The Knee-Jerk Reactor

Yes but it’s worth it to see a great appearance by Jack Palance

James

Jackman as X-24 looks like the guy from Cash Cab

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Yea fuck reddit. I pay to make terrible comments.

Les Whinen

R.I.P. Dr. Benton, just trying to retire growing corn and terrorized by racist assholes in the not too distant future

Lance Flexington

Just did an actual spit take with the sudden Fozzie impression! Bravo!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

My theory is is that the altered corn syrup that essentially prevented new mutant births and other stuff also caused wolverines healing degeneration and Xaviers brain degeneration.

Matthew Lloyd

It’s the Negotiator that was talking about Shane, we memory holed it because Kevin Spacey is the protagonist.

Coomanfu

I always thought X24 looks like Liev Schreiber's Sabertooth.

Jon Wika

I like Dafne Keen in The Acolyte. So cute and cuddly-looking as a Jedi. 😍

Paul

Thank you for the warning, Felipe!

Tanner McCullough

In the film and x-men evolution they only coat Lauras claws in adamantium.

Matthew Lloyd

For some reason 'Road to Perdition' popped in my head, but with that adult looking remake coming out soon I think you nailed it with the CROW

Patrick Franz

I also like dial of dynasty quite a bit and Copland.

Luke Gordnier

They actually address how Charles actually lost his fortune in Old Man Logan. He forgot he put all of it in the banana stand.

Jonathan Lyons

I was trying to figure out what August release is comic book related, and I think you nailed it.

I.C. Weiner

Indeed, Stephen's comics knowledge is formidable...

Damon LeCornu

I just want to say about Sauron, he is in one of my favorite comic book panels of all-time https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fjrzv05vzg9621.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3D73d8c46799c76e608be9d94c65ffdf5e90f1dcab

Dennis C

Laura doesn't have a full metal skeleton just the claws implanted in her feet and hands. She can grow just fine

Greg Vann

Beware (in case you're planning to watch it): SHANE has one of the worst Disgusting Shit Boys in movie history

Felipe Sobreiro

I'm always a sucker for films like Logan that manage to turn high concepts into grounded drama. While it's true that you can get a similar sort of experience watching a quality Western, the inclusion of the fantastical elements, when properly balanced, creates contrasting flavors that I think enhances the experience. Something like Xavier's dementia disrupting Logan's reality in a tangibly physical way is the sort of reification of abstract ideas that I love visiting these worlds for.

John Edwards

Tease for another comic-book WLM + an August release for the new one has me believing you'll be covering my beloved The Crow! A movie I watched a couple months ago and it HOLDS UP

Chris Rose

Yup. Because she was CREATED in the X-Factor program, and god...it would have been a horrific sideshow she'd become if her bones were coated at 11 or 12. Also, since only her claws are coated, her healing factor is like 2 - 3 times faster than Logan's...and she will never suffer adamantium poisoning.

Rhio2k

Not gonna lie, when I found out how old Charles Xavier was in the 90's, I was like "Holy crap...this dude has a stroke, he'll take out like 80% of the world's population!!"

Rhio2k

I read somewhere that they had only coated X-23’s claws with adamantium and not her whole skeleton so she would still grow.

Matt Watterson

When Laura turned Logan’s cross into an X, tears dude.

Nuña Bisness

Prayers for Cabin and swift release from Alkali Lake containment 🙏

Dustin Despres

I think I'd only heard of Shane because there was some reference in the cartoon Hey Arnold, only they changed it to Wayne for some reason.

Daniel Mayer

That's always been my thinking too, where it's reflecting America's shitty future where vice is the only industry left because our environment and infrastructure have basically collapsed and everyone's trying to stave off despair. Also, Vegas is probably 200 degrees at this point

Chris Rose

A great British pud. Not quite as good as a treacle sponge though.

Tom

Merchant was also in the brilliant show Extras which is a must watch for anyone who wants to see pervert Patrick Stewart.

Tom

I think the idea for Oklahoma City in the movie is that it’s sort of a Neo-Vegas. We have a loads and loads and loads of tribal casinos here in the state, but not many inside the bigger cities proper(OKC and Tulsa). Usually they’re right outside city limits or smaller towns. So, that being said I think it was just an imagined future where our Casinos took over as a major industry.

Greg Hulett

A grampie with Alzheimer's has the power to kill an entire race of people. Who does Xavier think he is? Biden? BA DUM TSS! Fuck Trump too, that anus face. Prisonfart.com

Eren Keskin

*extremely bad Patrick Stewart voice* "Come to Taco Bell for the Charles Xavier Quesalupa. We knew you'd be coming"

Matt

Why not watch both?

Chris Rose

My new theory is that they were going to do X2 but Cabin was unavailable and that episode has been in the works for 8 years. Clearly, the whole gang would need to be there for it.

jribs

Stephen is correct. Jackson and Spacey have a convi about Shane in The Negotiator.

Adam Ray

I love this movie. Yes you could say "why not just watch a western", but I say, "why not watch a western with Wolverine in it!". I think this is my favourite comic book movie. It has all the action of an X-Men movie, but with tons of added emotion.

Tony King

Cabin currently running around the northern Canadian wilderness in the big dumb Weapon X helmet

Matt

My only disappointment with Logan is that Fox finally used the X-Men to their fullest cinematic extent...just before getting mashed into Disney's big ol meatball.

Mark Ibarra

I like Logan and think it's a good movie however, I've always been bemused by the praise it's received. Not that the praise is undeserved it's just if I want to watch a movie like this I'll just go to the classic films it's a simulacra of (westerns). The endless rehashing/recreating/remaking and recuperating output of the super hero genre ran out of nostalgic 80s/90s comic book IP and now the super hero movies are attempting to pull non-comic culture into its gnashing machine jaws. Why watch a revisionist western called Logan when I can just watch the movie it's aping: Unforgiven?

Comrade Trash Panda

Will there be a spotted dick joke? About to find out. My favorite “comic book movie”, although, not even sure that’s the most accurate description of this one. Whatever, very stoked.

Milan

Personally it's my favorite comic book movie, but it's definitely not upbeat, so it's not for everyone. What's more your style?

Dominic Kovell

I am 10 minutes into the episode and I remembered Boyd Holbrook is in this movie. Anticipating the impression

Lono's Oboe

Will have to slightly disagree on this one. I like large parts of the film but overall, its a little oppressive in terms of tone. Granted, not the biggest Mangold fan out there. If nothing else, the tone fits the character better than the last Indiana Jones film did.
