The Nexus #94 "Turnabout Intruder" / "Final Mission"

On this edition of our Star Trek recap show, we're closing a major chapter on one of our longest-running shows as we bid farewell to TOS!

First up, it's the final voyage of the OG Enterprise crew, for now, in the not-great episode, "Turnabout Intruder"! Finally airing on June 3, 1969, after being delayed several weeks due to the death of Dwight D. Eisenhower, this episode features Kirk swapping bodies with a sinister ex-girlfriend he burned back in his academy days, Spock dropping Enterprise security guards left and right with neck pinches, Sulu being disgusted by Fake Kirk's capital punishment demands, and Scotty and Bones agreeing to mutiny if things get tough! It's a completely forgettable episode and certainly no way to send off this crew. Thankfully, they would get a few more adventures over the years!

Then, across the universe on TNG, we're talking about "Final Mission." Originally airing November 17, 1990, this is the episode where the show said goodbye to Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher as a full-time cast member. Wes gets one final adventure with Picard as they crash land on a barren, desert moon. Picard gets crushed by falling rocks and Wesley has to use his brain power to think their way to survival. The B story is the Enterprise towing a garbage scow, so it's a real full-throttle episode we have on our hands here!

Be sure you stick around until the very end of the episode as we announce where this show is going starting next month!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Ray Walston is a fake Boothby in a Voyager episode that has Species 8472 running a mock up of SF and Starfleet Academy/HQ while planning an invasion of Earth. So he'll appear one more time post TNG.

Billie Jackson

So apparently the leg pushers go all the way back to episode 2 or 3 of the series. Just as silly then, and even more silly that they had the set still 😂

Ray

Yep that is one of Uhura's finest moments across the entire canon. She assumes command and does a heck of a job! Always have a soft spot in my heart for Scotty, though, when he sings an Irish ballad (too bad it wasn't a Scottish tune). The animated series actually lets the whole cast stretch out in a way that TOS never did.

Chris Vincenti

I am super glad to see TAS is coming up, it is flawed but probably has a better banger to flop ratio than TOS and while it never hits the highs of a Balance of Terror or a City on the Edge of Forever it also never gets painfully fuckin boring like Alternative Factor or fucking vile like Turnabout Intruder. Plus you get lots of bridge aliens because they dont have to pay for makeup and the gravity goes out on the ship like every third episode and there is an ep where the boys are gooned on spores or some shit and Uhura is like FUCK THIS AND FUCK YOU I AM IN CHARGE and it rules so hard

Winson Paine

I'll be happy to continue the journey with you all through the next series and beyond! No matter how dire these TOS episodes are to revisit as an adult, they were such a joyous part of my childhood. Some of those Animated episodes actually hold up better... only some, though.

Chris Vincenti

There are two. Star Trek: New Voyages has had Takei and Koenig guest, and maybe even DC Fontana somehow involved. And Star Trek Continues has Scotty’s real life son playing Scotty!

Craig

As a huge nerd I have come to say the death penalty was mentioned in the menagerie/cage and the only remaining death penalty crime in the fed is going to the big headed pervert alien planet

Winson Paine

I feel like every episode of the 3rd season of TOS was Roddenberry daring NBC to cancel the show. Glad to hear the animated series is up next. Imagine a world where Turnabout Intruder was the last time we ever saw the TOS crew.

Definitely a bittersweet episode for me. The TOS offering was the main reason I joined the Patreon a thousand years ago, having never caught it growing up, and your excellent (?) impressions of Kirk and the boys have given me some of my heartiest laughs over the years. Really glad to hear they won't be fully going away quite yet.

John Edwards

I was hoping for DS9 but admit I’m happy we get a couple more years of Kirk, Spock and McCoy (no Chekhov though). I will be watching along as I’ve only seen a couple of episodes o TAS. Will you revisit the devil episode already covered on Animation Damnation?

Craig

No republican-trek ever plz

Andrew Dean

Can we get TAS style pics of the boys?

Andrew Dean

Yayyyy TAS, all my dreams are coming true

Rhea

Super glad to hear you all are covering TAS so we can have more time with the OG crew, I never even thought about that possibility. I'm a fan of the show, and it should make for some great discussion.

Dave

Thank you, Felipe! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

What a great idea to cover TAS!

Felipe Sobreiro

Yeah, it's Eric. You can hear Eric's thoughts on the audio above.

Dennis C

Around 55:00, I think it's Eric's audio

Felipe Sobreiro

Rick Berman could be an asshole to some of the cast (see Terry Farrell and why she didn't make it to season 7) and others he would bend over backwards for (Colm Meaney, Armin Shimmerman)

Dennis C

As for Wil Wheaton, he has stated in the past that he was going to get a role in a movie with a big director. He asked Berman if he can miss a few episodes, Rick said no and that they have a big Wesley episode coming up. There was no such episode. Also, Wil dealing with his verbally abusive parents didn't help - he probably wanted to leave the show because his parents likely wanted him to stay.

Dennis C

Someone’s audio cuts out towards the very end of the TOS segment, Andrew is replying to something we do not hear.

QB

Gene really wasn't involved in season 3. Before season 3, NBC promised Star Trek a good time slot on Mondays, but that would have forced NBC to move around Laugh In, their top rated series. The Laugh In producer threatened to take the show to another network, so NBC was forced to move Trek to the only slot remaining, Fridays at 10. Gene threatened to leave, and NBC called his bluff. Gene quit and was replaced to Fred Freiberger, who, rightly, only saw it as a job, and not a sci-fi show that people would still be talking about almost 60 years later..

Dennis C

Understandable. Perhaps talk about an episode or two for Animation Damnation? It’s def worth it.

Paul

We've already announced the next season will be covering The Penguin this fall. This show, while looking cool, starts August 1st during our break, so it's not gonna happen, unfortunately. We'll be watching for sure! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

That's awesome! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

No clue, Jeremy. Ask us in 2+ years! - Andrew

Met Michael Beihn at a con booth once. He was great, friendly, and talked to me and my friends for at least five minutes.

Balthazar Getty, 😀 ohhhh Jason London, 😟ohhhhh

Les Whinen

It’s been a looong time getting from there to heeeree

Not the Black Jobs

I do like when one of the hosts like Chris pretends they don't know what a convention is like and we all have to pretend four white nerds don't host this podcast

G Goldhar

Regarding the "no female captains" thing, I've heard fans retcon it by saying that Lester already had a psychotic break by that point and Kirk is just humoring her. Which still isn't perfect, but it's at least something to help it make sense in continuity.

Justine Prudhomme

Luckily Paramount has been restocking the fridge, so you'll never have to endure a full run of "Enterprise." Maybe.

Mark Ibarra

Any plans to bump TNG up to the first spot, and covering DS9 for the second half? After TAS, of course.

Jeremy Pawlak

There is apparently a fan made show that continues the og series that has had appearances from the og cast but I've no idea where you would find it.

Kureigu

TAS BEST IDEA MOVING FORWARD!! I can’t wait 🫡🫡🫡
