Episode #746: Beverly Hills Cop III

“You don’t need to ask for directions anymore, you’re no longer a fish out of water!” - Andrew on Axel’s third time in Los Angeles

On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza tackles an action comedy sequel that didn’t need to exist at all, and no one wanted to make in the first place, Beverly Hills Cop III! What in the hell tone were they shooting for with this movie? How is Axel not blamed for Inspector Todd’s death at the hands of Ellis De Wald? Why did they replace Taggart with Hector Elizondo playing a guy who’s just Taggart with different facial hair? How is Wonder World still open for business after all the carnage Axel and company carry out on park grounds? And how hilarious and great is this George Lucas cameo? PLUS: What was the Tunnel of Love supposed to represent at the end?

Beverly Hills Cop III stars Eddie Murphy, Timothy Carhart, Stephen McHattie, Judge Reinhold, Hector Elizondo, John Saxon, Theresa Randle, Alan Young, Bronson Pinchot, and George Lucas as Disappointed Man; directed by John Landis.

Ahhh the memories of Great America.

Matzar

I just thought of Landisember

profondo robbo

No reason given for the Theresa Randle recast in the latest Bad Boys film. But she hasn't been in a film in about 14 years so probably not a scheduling conflict. As always, great show! Luv u Guys!!

Lynette Michelle

What a god awful movie. All the actions set pieces felt by the numbers, with no stake or sense of jeopardy. Like padding to get to the run time. Even Murphy feels joyless, and especially when he’s laughing.

Dean

The cut in the Aqua Velva scene is in my Top 5 Movie Cuts list - Zodiac WLM when??

Vicky I

Re: Character Actor Origins - Stephen McHattie Like Henriksen, the guy's been around since the 70s. I say this as a possible Spooktacular pick, one of his early leading roles was in the made for TV sequel no one asked for, Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby.

Todd B

Great America, and it's where the 49ers stadium is in Santa Clara. Norcal.

Brandon

You're right, it is awful. However I think it is so far removed from the first two movies that if they called it something else and renamed Murphy's character, the exact same movie might have played a lot better in 94.

Ross Tyrie

Can't wait for that "The Tunnel of Love is Your Pussy" rap track

Daryl Williams

I went there back in 2006...was super fun then!

Robert Calvillo

I'm really tempted to get a season pass + the food pass. I looked it up a while back and it's a decent deal, lol. I'm in rhe east bay, so the drive isn't that far but I don't know how often I'd actually go

Frank Grimes

BHC3 was filmed at Paramount’s Great America, a now defunct theme-park. I think they wanted the movie to hype-up the theme park, that’s why the story takes place there: https://youtu.be/yNr9swgUhMw?si=FulK9v4LWM5H31SE We never know what we had until it’s gone.

Paul

Way better!

Happy Birthtime!

Better Dean!

We Hate Movies

Chris almost blew my mind mentioning Dean Cain was in BHC2. STOCKWELL. It was Dean Stockwell. Took me a minute to realise though

Happy Birthtime!

I don't get triggered, I just make another cocktail, lol. Bring on the cliches! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

You're not wrong. There was a lost live show from Chicago AGES ago where Vice Versa was covered by myself, Eric and I believe our good friend, Justin J. Case! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Yeah, that's how I interpreted that Springsteen album too, Eric.

Mark Ibarra

Man, I would have bet money you guys did Vice Versa already but now that you mention it… please?

Milan

Just FYI, the Earthquake ride is part of the backlot tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, which also used to feature a Battlestar Galactica section well beyond anyone could possibly care.

JULANDIS

Felipe Sobreiro

This ought to be fun. 😁 I've seen more scenes from "Axel F", unfortunately poor Jupin is gonna be triggered a few times by a few stupid cliches.

Dustin Urbanski

Harold Faltermeyer doing the Benny Hill Theme might kind of rule

Matt

Hey!

Frank Grimes

That fuckin Zorg gun needs to stay in The 5th Element lol

Nathan Lemire

So "The Tunnel of Love is Her Pussy" shirts?

James C Harris

Hope 4 is good. As for 3, I have a soft spot for it...this version of the axel f theme might be my fave, also the orchestrated version

Frank Grimes

Watched it for the first time for this episode and good GOD it's awful

Scmods

I've often wondered which directors could get a theme month all to themselves and Landis might be up there.

profondo robbo

Similar to Steve, I loved this one as a kid. Might've been my favorite of the three. I distinctly recall thinking the music was best in this one, which is maddening because I watched it tonight and the music sounds so cheap. Harold Faltermeyer absolutely killed it with those first two movies and I was too dumb as a child to realize it.

Busiris

One of the worst movies I've seen in a theater. Right down there with the remake of The Haunting. So damn bad.

Ed Harris

UK-set sequel would've been called Benny Hills Cop
