The Nexus #93 "All Our Yesterdays" / "Future Imperfect"

On this month's trip into the Star Trek universe on The Nexus, we're talking about a solid Riker episode of TNG and the PENULTIMATE episode of TOS!

First up, that second-to-last TOS episode is "All Our Yesterdays," which originally aired back on March 14, 1969. This slashed-budget ep features the Core Three heading down to a supposedly "uninhabited" planet and immediately finding life, wow, weird! They get separated into two different periods of time in this planet's history, and Spock and McCoy kinda fight over a lady during this planet's Ice Age, while Kirk is trapped in a different Witchfinder General-esque timeline battling with musketeers and crooked jailers— and there are literally no other Star Trek characters in this episode! Shrug.

Then over on TNG, it's the Riker-heavy ep, "Future Imperfect," which aired on November 10, 1990. This is the one where Riker wakes up after an away mission accident and 16 years have seemingly passed! Picard is now an admiral working to negotiate a truce with the Romulans, Data is Riker's Number One, Jonathan Frakes looks like an older Orson Welles in that age make-up, and Riker himself is sidled with a rotten child who sucks at the trombone and a dead wife he doesn't even remember meeting!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Riker playing the trombone, huffing that fucking sweet gas? Feeling the effects? Can I get a HELL YEAH?

Purple Roundy

I do love me some Frosted Frakes! He looks great with the salt and pepper.

Amanda and Daniel Pietsch

My favourite part of the TNG episode is the part where Frakes flubs his line at the birthday, Marina kinda whacks him, and they all have a very real laugh when he finally says it. You can tell how much fun they had filming the show.

Sam

There are quite a few eps that have movies that are watchable on their own. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank immediately comes to mind.

Felix Forrester

My bugbear for movie releases are non mst3k releases of movies that were on the show, like who wants to watch carnival magic seight up?

Mark D Myers

They took many a lump; but twas all in good fun.

Mark Ibarra

Shoulder clapper is slang for police I think.

Paul Deehan

I’m going to be very sorry to see the WHM versions of Kirk, Spock and especially McCoy go. Please tell me a WLM Star Trek VI is coming!

Craig

The end run of TOS reminding me that it has some opinions about the Irish, even space Irish.

Ajax

Idk how this would work but I’d love if next time y’all collab with James and Chelsea if you could expand on your little chat here about horror movies as franchises. I like hearing the inside baseball from people “in the industry” talk about horror. Also it’s literally never not funny when you guys sing 90s songs as Bones.

Lar

Marvin Chomsky is Noam’s cousin.

Duncan

At any time Riker can see that boy again and he wakes up back in that fucking cave just like how at any time a John Cusack movie can become a sequel to 1408

G Goldhar

That TOS episode was hilarious. 😂

Paul

Kudos for hitting the home stretch of the TOS slog. Trying to wring entertaining content out of these last few episodes must be like shaking the cup and trying to suck one more sip of soda from out between the ice cubes.

Mark Ibarra

If time travel exists in the future, wouldn't we know by now? 😆
