Episode #741: Beneath the Planet of the Apes

“I think he’s in both Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11!” - Chris, on Heston’s sequel policy

On this week’s episode, we’re going back to, well, Earth, to chat about the fun-as-hell sequel, Beneath the Planet of the Apes! How silly was it to make James Franciscus look exactly like Charlton Heston, instead of just having him play Taylor? How much of a total jerk is Dr. Zaius? Are these under-dwellers wearing those masks for outsiders only or what? How great are Zira and Cornelius as characters? And how fantastic is it to watch a big, Hollywood, sci-fi sequel and the movie’s totally unconcerned with setting up the next one? PLUS: Never agree to follow Taylor in traffic, because he’s gonna blow down the road and leave you in the dust!

Beneath the Planet of the Apes stars James Franciscus, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, Linda Harrison, James Gregory, David Watson, Don Pedro Colley, Natalie Trundy, Thomas Gomez, Jeff Corey, Victor Bruno, Paul Richards, and Charlton Heston as Colonel George Taylor; directed by Ted Post.

it's okay Librarian, humans can use that word

Johnny Wrong

Not pertaining to this movie but I think fans would love for you guys to start a Seinfeld commentary podcast

Dylan Grice

I was surprised how much I liked the latter half of this movie. You all are motivating me to watch the rest of them too. Name your kid Brent and they'll either be a sporting goods store manager as per Chris Cabin or they'll portray possibly the most beloved android in scifi. Couple of options for Brents out there

Smaug

In Conquest of the Planet it’s mentioned that a space plague wiped out all the cats and dogs which led to the fascist society. Humans looking for new pets domesticated apes and that’s what led to the ape slavery then eventual ape rebellion

Kevin Lynch

Now everyone has cold dead hands!

Jason

A professional in an ape mask is still a professional.

I knew a Ted once. His last name was Bair. Yes his name is Ted (Teddy) Bair (Bear). Not too sure on the orgies though.

DMAC

It really does end quite abruptly!

Craig

If there was one person who could have, and would have nuked the entire planet if they could, it was Charlton Heston.

I do have a soft spot for that New Hollywood era where it wasn't uncommon for a studio release to just suddenly go "Hey, your protagonists are violently dead with little to no epilogue. The End."

Mark Ibarra

There's something to be said for the era of sci-fi that was comfortable ending on pure existential gutpunches. Exiting the theatre with a dead silent audience is an experience that's harder to get nowadays if you're not actively seeking out films like Zone of Interest.

John Edwards

What Lies Beneath?! You guys have been teasing that fucking thing since the OBAMA administration

G Goldhar

I have a cousin Ted! He's a millennial! He does not have a mustache! I don't know his thoughts on orgies.

Convincing John

This movie gave birth to my favorite joke from Veep when Dan finds out that Jonah has been shaving his head to keep getting sympathy for having cancer. You look like you should be underground worshipping an atomic bomb! https://youtu.be/9zyjPMalExY?si=nLiSBb57jZs_D28R

jribs

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times !?!

Nathan Lemire

Happy Ape-ril 2.0, everybody! :D The ending for this movie always left a big impression on me ever since I saw it as a kid. I could *not* imagine how nasty the internet-dwellers would be if Hollywood somehow ended a movie in a big franchise like they do here. Wild stuff.

Busiris

I remember watching the original on TV as a kid and they put this on straight after it. I was very confused by the lack of Heston and vaguely recall someone disappearing into a sand dune before my parents made me go to bed. I’ve still never seen the whole film. Will rectify that tonight!

Craig

Ook Ook Ook!
