Episode #739: House on Haunted Hill (1999)
Added 2024-05-14 04:00:04 +0000 UTC
“I’ll say it: Chris Kattan? Best part of this movie!” - Steve
On this week’s episode, we’re finally chatting about the “bad-ass” horror remake, House on Haunted Hill! Did any of those numerous deleted scenes maybe have more character details by any chance? Why couldn’t Jeffrey Combs have played a larger role in this movie? How does Geoffrey Rush look so much like Vincent Price in this and they refused to come out and say it— the guy’s named Price to boot, so c’mon! And did anybody else have the Mandela Effect bad memory that Kattan’s character got it in the first fifteen minutes? PLUS: Haunted houses need companionship too!
House on Haunted Hill stars Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Kattan, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Max Perlich, Lisa Loeb, James Marsters, Peter Graves, and Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Vannacutt; directed by William Malone.

Oh , we're talking about first album purchases? I remember walking to Pier Records to buy World Destruction -Afrika Bambaataa and Johnny Rotten. We weren't talking about that? Oh well, I did anyways.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the Survivor type horror movie you were talking about - (my best Jupin intro voice) "Today on the program, 5 million dollars, 9 strangers in a house, an indeterminate number of days, 1 Survivor! It's House of 9 (2005) starring Dennis Hopper, Kelly Brook and Peter Capaldi."
can be seen for free on Tubi or Amazon, fyi runtime 88 mins.

Yes! We forgot to bring that up. Just two shitty, CGI tapes sitting on that guy's desk. Like, did he bring his own VCR? Or was he saving them for after he got done working the party? It's all so stupid. - Andrew

I saw this in the theater in Tupelo, MS in a double feature with The Insider.
Drove up to Tupelo from MS State with my college girlfriend, we each chose one.

Did anyone else's version of this movie have the terribly tracked in post production product placement of the blockbuster video tapes on the control room guy's desk?

Great to see the respect and adoration Chris Kattan deserves. He gives the best performance here as he did in Monkeybone.

I was working in a theater at the ticket counter when this came out. A guy with two toddlers came up wanting to watch it and I warned him that it might be to intense for the younguns.
He yelled at me, how dare I tell him how to handle his kids and demanded tickets.
20 or so minutes later I hear screaming and crying and the guy and the kids are at the door demanding a refund yelling at my manager that anyone would sell him tickets to that when he had kids.
She was there for the original encounter just gave him a refund and he tried to yell at my manager more but she just shut the door in his face and he dragged his kids off.

I will admit up front - I have an odd soft spot for this garbage fire.
Having said that - YES. The roller coaster fakeout always struck me as such a weird design choice.
Like, somewhere there's an abandoned field riddled with smashed empty cars and the whole thing would turn out to be a giant money laundering scheme by Geoffrey Rush.

As they said in the episode there were a few scenes that were good. But like all the weird remakes they did in this era it was trying too hard. But I saw it as a kid and I have nostalgia for it.

I have a soft spot for almost all of the original selection of titles delivered by Dark Castle, although they all tended to have problems when it came to endings (especially endings making too much use of CGI).
Also, in case it hasn't been mentioned anywhere yet, factoid fans may enjoy knowing that "twisted nurse" is played by the same woman who was the magnificent Gozer in Ghostbusters.

Agreed. The plot is flawed of course but there were some scenes that were so well done, maybe ahead of their time even IMO.

I wonder if the crew was getting the early Chris Kattan kill confused with the wrestling star Bill Goldberg movie; Santa's Slay. Opening scene; him and so other familiar faces, maybe James Caan too, get murdered by Santa. Best part of the movie.

We can't get away from that Marilyn Manson cover the last 30 days here...sweet dreams are made of VHS tapes, viva la Jame Master. Also the Hulk coaster at Universal they use in the beginning of this movie rules, it's so fun

Been looking forward to this one! This film was my choice for this year's Listener Request Month, so it's cool to see it tackled within the same year. One of my favorites to rewatch, watched it last night with the director's commentary in preparation for today's episode.
