Box Office Poll for the Weekend of May 10
Added 2024-05-11 05:08:44 +0000 UTCHey gang, wild-ass day today, so getting this week's poll up a little late, but hey, we're going APE getting ready to head out for the WHM Texas Two-Step next week! [Get them tix here, by the way!]
So this weekend, the next APES movie is here! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is out and it's hard to believe it's been seven, long years since I went to the theater at 11:00am and immediately greened out watching War for the Planet of the Apes! This one is here courtesy of Mr. Maze Runner himself, Wes Ball and it's forecast to drum up somewhere around $40M-$45M. Unfortunately, based on that read, it's already tracking to be the lowest opening for any of these modern era apes movies (beginning with 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes), which is a bummer.
A lot of the flick's total this weekend is going to depend on the IMAX turnout. I can't imagine many IMAX screens will be holding over The Fall Guy, so hopefully there's a decent push from those higher ticket sales. Non-IMAX PLF screens will also likely be carrying this movie.
I'll toss out a couple other things to consider, one good and one not so good for the film's total. The Planet of the Apes franchise has multi-generational appeal. Boomers and up have had some version of Apes on screens in their lifetimes, starting with the Heston-lead original in 1968. So that's a pretty wide audience net being cast.
That said, the awareness around this movie is a real question. It's not a great title, one, and two, there aren't really any big, known names in this movie. Previous entries had folks like James Franco, Woody Harrelson, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Mark Wahlberg, and so on. The biggest name here is William H. Macy, who I don't even remember being in the trailer, and then maybe Kevin Durand, who I love, but he's not a household name and is also playing an ape, so he's covered up by CGI anyway.
So with all that info swimming around, what do we think here? What kind of box office will this new Apes sequel drum up? Vote below and we'll chat about it when On-Screen Live returns on May 20!
Have a great weekend, y'all— watch good stuff! - Andrew

2024-05-12 19:42:51 +0000 UTCI'm reluctantly saying it'll exceed expectations despite everyone saying movies are doomed after the recent bad box office numbers for other movies. My screening on Thursday was pretty full, so I'm hopeful it'll do well.

2024-05-11 17:07:25 +0000 UTCThe original sequels (from the 70s) were scrappy AF too, with shoestring budgets and nary a star in sight (Heston made only a cameo appearance after the first one), but they were still really creative and fun with the storytelling. If that’s the inspiration they take, this movie could actually be good.

2024-05-11 14:59:20 +0000 UTCNah, that was a one-and-done. Not to say we'll never cover another Apes film, we def will, but that theme month ran out of gas before the month even ended. - Andrew

2024-05-11 09:26:00 +0000 UTCsaw it on the early screening last wed, and while it wasn't a packed house, it was filled more than fall guy's early screening. I'mma go with ook - ook. There seems to be some hype/anticipation, but maybe not by much.

2024-05-11 08:08:25 +0000 UTCThat's a shame. The Fall Guy is a classic (/typical) mid-budget star-driven action comedy. The kind of stuff mid-budget films are built on. Not "epic", not franchise fare. Just "do you like one of these people? If so, buy a ticket and have a little fun".

2024-05-11 06:53:56 +0000 UTCDomestic box office is gonna be less than half the tale. CGI-heavy movies like this tend to do VERY well internationally. CGI is the big star, and even aside from them, outside of North America, I doubt William H Macy is as big a star as random nameless attractive lady. Hell, maybe even that bird will bring in a few million. I wanna see what rad stuff it's gonna do.

2024-05-11 05:43:46 +0000 UTCSaw it last night, I would definitely rank it last of the 4 reboot movies, but that is more a testament to high quality the first 3 are. I hope, and am voting it does well, but it seems like this is a down year at the box office

2024-05-11 05:18:15 +0000 UTCOne thing’s for sure: “The Fall Guy” doesn’t have a chance of rebounding after stumbling at the box office; not with the apes around. Stick a fork on TFG.

2024-05-11 05:16:01 +0000 UTCOok ook ook! Been a fan of the new Apes films from the beginning. Also Kevin Durand, The Floronic Man from the very short lived Swamp Thing series was excellent as Proximus Caesar!
