Episode #736: Men at Work

“I saw this in theaters!” - Steve, proudly

On this week’s episode, the guys bring SHEENPRIL (still stupid) to a close with a fun discussion on the better-than-you-remember Emilio-directed buddy comedy, Men at Work! How great is the chemistry between the two Sheen brothers on screen? What a great spice Keith David is to throw in here— total legend! Shouldn’t they have adjusted the script structure a bit to make this a One Crazy Night movie? And what an unexpected, but fabulous soundtrack! PLUS: Our heroic garbagemen team up with the Ninja Turtles!

Men at Work stars Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Leslie Hope, Dean Cameron, John Getz, Hawk Wolinski, John Lavachielli, Geoffrey Blake, Cameron Dye, John Putch, Tommy Hinkley, Darrell Larson, Sy Richardson, Troy Evans, and Keith David as Louis Fedders; directed by Emilio Estevez.

Catch the WHM Texas Two-Step in a few weeks as we play Houston on May 14th and Austin on May 15th, talking Robocop 2 & From Dusk Till Dawn respectively!

Episode #736: Men at Work

Comments

I was so excited that you guys did this movie. At first, I was worried that you were just gonna talk about how awful the movie is because I actually enjoyed it. But I am so glad I’m not the only one that actually was entertained by this.

Sharon P

Cabin loves Hudson Hawk.

Wisdom is that movie where in the end Emilio gets turned into Swiss cheese by the cops in slow motion in the end and infamously it turns out it’s ALL IN HIS HEAD!! And the outcome in the end is different and we get the happy ending… I saw this at a live show recently and the audience was so upset by the hack ending it derailed the last 10 minutes of the movie…. Also, Keith David and Charlie Sheen have great chemistry because they’re so great together in Platoon… his last scene with Sheen in that movie is one of my favorite scenes in the film… , BTW, here in Los Angels, our DARE Officers were retired LAPD cops and mid 90s OLD TIMERS post Rodney King and OJ weee about as racist as you could imagine, never mind saying no to drugs, I said no to cops….great hilarious episode you guys, good luck in Texas 👍🏻😎🤠🤠

Carlos Ramirez

I know they were making fun of those comic crossovers but the transformers star trek one was pretty good. It was drawn in the style of Star Trek the animated series.

Mark D Myers

Regarding BB guns vs pellet guns: they're both air rifles, and a lot of air rifles can fire both BBs and pellets. BBs are spherical projectiles, like ball bearings. Pellets are usually conical, shaped a bit like a badminton shuttlecock.

Just to add to the "TMNT M@W" crossover...what if the garbage truck that crushed Shredder was from the Men At Work??

TheBestMike

The “stop jerking off” in Krang voice gave me a Joker esque laugh fit. Great episode fellas!

Zack Gillespie

I’ve never seen this but a bunch of my friends in high school would constantly say “golf clap” and do it because of this film.

Craig

Henry Rollins and the Red Hot Chili Peppers demanding too much in residuals.

Craig

Hard way to hear how the legend Rip Torn went out.

Jason

I briefly had a pellet gun that I bought with my chore money when I was 13 and determined on my own that it was too dangerous for me to have and returned it to the store. I think I then used that money to buy Magic cards. That thing put pretty deep holes in stucco when I shot it at the wall in my backyard. I'm surprised that Eric, our collective rural cousin, couldn't speak authoritatively about pellet v BB guns, but I like him more for not being a weapons kid.

Smaug

This was my first-time watch and I actually didn't expect there to be a Weekend at Bernie's situation! I noticed at least one time where the actor playing Berger blinked while being dead. I didn't even consider it a huge mistake because it gave me such a big laugh at how overt it was in that scene.

Busiris

I'd totally be down for annual Sheenpril. This was great.

The Wheel

Love the episode. I've seen Wisdom and its exactly what one would expect from a first time director in their mid twenties who is trying to make a point. Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but I also haven't been seeking it out actively because I loved it in high school.

Ed Harris

That "perfectly good white boy" joke is from Better of Dead.

J HEASLEY

It is wild to me that movies like The Chase which was on Comedy Central on what seemed like 2-3 times a week are now nearly impossible to find streaming.

HockeenightsCT

That's fair. Thanks, Andrew!

Paul Heidtman

Like Eric I think I’m throwing this one back on later tonight (and ordering that Blu-Ray…) Another observation is Sheen’s “cheers” towards Emilio and Keith while they were watching him through the binoculars with Susan is so fucking perfect. Such rascal behavior, trying to make his friends smirk during a covert operation. Also I love the undeniable leftist streak both Estevez Brothers have in their flicks

RJ Cunningham

Good god! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We were fully planning on doing The Chase, but then found out it's literally not streaming anywhere. Most of the audience likes to watch along with what we cover, so we shelved the idea until it's back on at least one platform. Stay tuned! - Andrew

Thanks for the recs, Daniel! - Andrew

Regarding hoarders: I had a client who lived on the other side of the country. Her brother died, but he happened to live within a couple of miles of me so I told her I would help out in clearing out his condo. She warned me he was a bit of a hoarder, but I waved it off because people like to exaggerate. When the locksmith opened the front door he fully inhaled the smell and started to gag. The place reeked because of the trash but also because like the old lady Eric lived by, his toilet stopped working so he started trashing and bottling everything. And you guys are right about the next step, once he couldn't go down to the dumpster he just left it there. Anyway, I opened all the windows, turned on the fans and told my client she had to fly out and take care of it. She ended up throwing it all away in the dumpster.

I.C. Weiner

Pound for pound, this may have been on HBO at a Beastmaster rate.

Mark Ibarra

Can't wait for the sequel!

Damon LeCornu

Another great episode, guys! I have to admit, I was kind of hoping for an episode on "The Chase." Maybe someday in the future? 🤞

Paul Heidtman

Love this movie, seem to watch it at least once a year. Glad to see the WHM crew also dig it.

Matt Reid

I now need a sequel to Turtles In Time where the Men At Work and TMNT travel back to 1870’s New Mexico to team up with the Young Guns and fight the Johnson County War

HockeenightsCT

I saw this with my best friend in grade school at a double feature where it was inexplicably paired with Jetsons:The Movie. Guess which 2 kids wanted to be crime solving garbage men the next day.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Has WHM/WLM covered Hudson Hawk? One of my favorite cartoon vanity projects of all time.

Nathan Lemire

He made Requiem for a Dream a laugh riot with the classic line "I know it's pretty baby, but I didn't take it out for air"

DMAC

Golf clap? Golf clap.

DMAC

Bb gun= ball bearing, pellet more of a tiny bullet shaped piece of lead same diameter, both air propelled. :D cheers boys

Nathan Lemire

“You seen my gloves, amigo?” “In the glove compartimente” One of my favorite movie exchanges ever. This is up there for Keith Davidson’s best role and I feel this movie never gets spoken about.

RJ Cunningham

I was listening to the Big Lebowski episode earlier today, at the time you guys mentioned a good greasy old fashioned bowling alley. When you're in Austin if you have the time Highland Lanes is on Burnet Rd., from where Cap City Comedy is, it's a 50 year old bowling alley that's closing at the end of the year. Burgers are good, decently heavy pours on drinks, good bowling times. In that immediate area you'll find really good BBQ joint Slab, Emerald Tavern for board games, the original Pinballz location, Trudy's if you want to just get blotto on Mexican Martinis and meh "Southwestern Food".

Daniel Garcia

John Wisdom? And his best friend is a talking pie

Dan Craftwerk

Keith David bumps up any movie at least 1/2 star.

"There are a few sacred things in this world that you don't EVER mess with, and one of them just happens to be another man's fries. You remember that, and you'll live a long and healthy life." A quote I've used freely for the last 35 years, and I don't know that any actor in history could've delivered it as well as the great Keith David...
