Episode #735: The Arrival (1996)

“This is kinda like Contact for stupid people?” - Steve

On this week’s episode, we’re in the back-half of SHEENPRIL with a chat about the fairly solid, alien invasion b-picture, The Arrival! What kind of character name is Charlie’s here, with this Zane Zaminsky? If this movie was more popular, would there have been Zane Zaminsky Halloween costumes with the glasses, buzzed haircut and goatee? How incredible was the late Ron Silver at playing these great scumbag characters? And what were they thinking with killing off Lindsay Crouse’s with those stupid scorpions? PLUS: This episode has enough Ron Silver impressions to last a lifetime!

The Arrival stars Charlie Sheen, Ron Silver, Lindsay Crouse, Teri Polo, Richard Schiff, Leon Rippy, and Ángel de la Peña as Skeleton Man; directed by David Twohy.

Episode #735: The Arrival (1996)

Comments

“Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms!” Nice reference.

Tim Cooper

Amazing fact I just found on his Wikipedia page: “ Silver went on to graduate from the State University of New York at Buffalo, with a Bachelor of Arts in SPANISH and Chinese”

Craig

Been waiting for this episode for a long time. Love you guys

Miguel Sanchez

If April 2025 isnt Estevezpril then there is no justice in the world.

William K. Wolfrum

A+ episode, got kicked out of the quiet car for guffawing one too many times.

HockeenightsCT

Did Andrew experience flashbacks after seeing Beau is Afraid?

Jamie

Okay, now I gotta see this movie! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I mentioned it in the weekly recap but Ron Silver playing himself as the man hunting Heatvision and Jack is chef kiss funny. For those confused behold the greatest? TV show that was never made. https://youtu.be/6lWgXDOAJ5s?si=pUDV6j41QivSOwbk

Dan sulin

Also whenever anyone almost kills you, call a lawyer. Could have made bank from that asshole

Dan sulin

My favourite Ron Silver moment happens in Reversal of Fortune, the movie about the Von Bulow trial in which he plays Alan Dershowitz. There's a scene where he's playing a game of pickup basketball wearing these John Stockton-length jorts, which is hilarious enough, and in the middle of it, takes a call with this giant cellular brick phone. I can't remember what prompted him to do it, but he gets pissed off during the call, and proceeds to slam this $7,500 piece of equipment onto the ground, breaking it.

Z

Been a while since we had a CHUDD reference

I'd Rather Have No Name

This film completes the Estevez Extraterrestrial Trilogy, following Emilio in REPO MAN and Martin Sheen in PROJECT: ALF

Mark Ibarra

Important life lesson learned: never rent an apartment under Jared Kushner or Jesse Pinkman.

John Edwards

I don’t even remember Ron Silver being in this movie, much less him basically doing a live-action Señor Spielbergo impression lol

John King

That sounds nuts! And better ...

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

I thought this was deep and spooky when I was a kid. I think there IS a decent movie buried in there, but I rewatched it for this and it is kind of slow and boring. And the legs are stupid.

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

What the?!

Steven Avalos

It just hit me that this movie had a West Wing double-whammy of Schiff and Silver!

James C Harris

I’d like to think that he would’ve left over Trump and 15 more years of forever war.

jribs

That bathroom story is wild.....lucked out there, glad you weren't hurt

Frank Grimes

It's a very accomplished shared impression.

Adam Lewis

Suckball is hilarious 😂

Knut Farstad

The thing about Ron Silver was that he was a lifelong Democrat and then 9/11 happened

James C Harris

Forget Sheenpril, you could have done Arrivepril, since looking up this movie I found ANOTHER movie called The Arrival, 1991 starring John Saxon. The plot summary is wild: “ (the alien) develops a disturbing craving for the estrogen-infused blood of ovulating women.”

Craig

On a family vacation as a child I watched this in a motel 6 room while a flu slowly took hold of my body and created horrifying fever dreams of backward legged people.

Albert C

Perhaps Steve will appreciate this, but during the first Kiki scene I was thinking “what? Did Chuck Dixon write this?!”

RJ Cunningham

Gotta love seeing more Twohy movies. Two two two two two! And of course as far as the episode goes, the Ron Silver impressions literally never failed to make me laugh. 😂

Busiris

Can confirm this was a cable classic around the house. I blame this and Fire in the Sky for being utterly terrified of aliens until I hit my 20s.
