Box Office Poll for the Weekend of April 19
Added 2024-04-19 16:00:14 +0000 UTCHey folks, we're packing our bags and getting ready to head down to Atlanta for next week's kick-off to our spring run of shows when we play the City Winery on Thursday, 4/25, but before that, we're gonna squeeze one more box office poll in for this weekend!
So this weekend sees the release of Abigail, the new movie directed by the always-bringing-the-juice team, Radio Silence (Scream VI, Ready or Not) and written by Stephen Shields (The Hole in the Ground) and Guy Busick (Scream VI, Ready or Not), so between those creatives and some of the cast who have also notably dabbled in horror, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, and Kathryn Newton, the movie has a really solid genre-world pedigree which is a plus when trying to appeal to the horror hound community. It's also peppered with other known names like Kevin Durand, Giancarlo Esposito, Matthew Goode, and the late Angus Cloud, so the movie is casting a wide net as far as audience interest potential.
It's also got a solid 85% on RT and a 62 on Metacritic. The trailer has also been running strong since the start of the year—I recall first seeing it in theaters when I caught The Beekeeper opening day (that's right)—so it's gotten in front of a lot of eyeballs at this point.
Some forecasts are putting the film's debut anywhere from $20M-$25M (Deadline has it all the way down at $12M which I personally think might be a bit on the low side.)
So what do we think? What kind of box office take will Abigail sink its teeth into? Vote below and we'll report back in a couple weeks when OSL returns!
Have a great weekend at the movies, y'all and we'll see you in Atlanta! - Andrew

I was way off. Thought there'd be a solid 20.

2024-04-22 10:08:46 +0000 UTClooks like it may be Deadline...which I just read on...deadline

2024-04-21 12:06:56 +0000 UTCJust hope it does well for the radio silence boys, even if only for the fact of making WHM cannon in the Scream universe!

2024-04-20 18:15:02 +0000 UTCLooks pretty fun, with a good cast. Horror usually does pretty good as well

2024-04-20 04:53:32 +0000 UTCGoing Deadline on this one. I can’t imagine this having the hype of a M3gan or anything like that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Civil War holds on to the top spot. Either way, a super slow weekend at the theaters overall.

2024-04-20 02:03:46 +0000 UTCI saw Shrek 2 in the theater at age 12 and had a great time. No shame in taking a kid to go see it. Now I'm 32 and WHM has made me kinda dread having to watch it again when my kid asks for it 😁

2024-04-20 01:42:57 +0000 UTCThat movie looks intolerable. I think that I would lose a fortune on concession stand visits just to take breaks from it.

2024-04-20 01:39:21 +0000 UTCI hadn't heard of this movie. It has 14 screenings over Saturday and Sunday between the two theaters by me, including one in "Super EMX," which is presumably some new type of 3D that makes you piss yourself or something.

2024-04-20 01:37:52 +0000 UTCGoing on Sunday think it's definitely gonna over perform!!

2024-04-19 18:44:45 +0000 UTCThanks for the response and explanation. If I can be a proud dad for a moment: my son absolutely couldn't give 2 shits about Shrek 2 and was excited to leave.

2024-04-19 18:24:52 +0000 UTCI am going tomorrow. I think it's going to be a lot of fun.

2024-04-19 18:16:31 +0000 UTCHorror fans will sink their teeth into this for sure but no need to get our blood up. $13M-$18M is my guess

2024-04-19 17:27:53 +0000 UTC$15m feels about right. Going to see it tonight. It looks fun and glad to see it reviewing well.

2024-04-19 17:03:13 +0000 UTCSo they aren't built into the movie? I've always wondered about trailers. Interesting factoid

2024-04-19 16:22:20 +0000 UTCThe reviews are surprisingly good and I wanna support Melissa, so I'm going Sunday. I can't see it overperforming, though. And I can see Ungentlemanly Affairs straight-out flopping, which...is funny.

2024-04-19 16:22:06 +0000 UTCOkay, first off I.C., legit lol at "pauses for boos." But also, yeah, just a total error when the projectionist or technician simply uploaded the wrong trailer playlist to the feature. Digital projection presentation interfaces are just big giant playlists that have to be built up like anything else and in this case, someone totally biffed on which package went where. - Andrew

2024-04-19 16:21:09 +0000 UTCHope this does well but I feel like Godzilla and Civil War are gonna eat its lunch a bit, I'm guessing $15 million-ish

2024-04-19 16:18:42 +0000 UTCI took my 4 year old son to see Shrek 2 re-release last week *pauses for boos* and the trailer package included The Watchers, Abigail, and a red band trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine. The first 2 scared the shit out of him and the 3rd caused me to unsuccessfully explain to him why he can't see it. So, I now have a mighty grudge against those movies and am voting for a bomb. PS, do you guys know how an R rated trailer package could get attached to a PG movie?

2024-04-19 16:07:56 +0000 UTCOn the one hand, horror usually scores buckets. On the other, I literally wouldn't have known this movie exists if not for a mention on On-Screen Live. Gotta take the under here, I think.

2024-04-19 16:07:14 +0000 UTCI've been wrong a good portion of these...but I'll say soild turnout...it's Melissa and radio silence, both have built good will with scream...and many may go see this as a big fuck you to spyglass.
