The Nexus #91 "The Thaw" / "Those Old Scientists"

This month on our Star Trek recap show, The Nexus, we're covering two episodes curated by our patrons!

First up, it's the Star Trek: Voyager episode, "The Thaw." Originally airing April 29, 1996, this episode has Harry Kim annoyingly practicing his clarinet in the cold open, Michael McKean playing a god-being-type evil clown, a bunch of frozen-in-stasis scientists, a sentient tree with dreadlocks, a fella getting his head cut off, The Doctor getting to be amazing as always, and Janeway rambling about rollercoasters!

Then up on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it's the incredibly popular season two episode, "Those Old Scientists." Premiering on July 22 of last year, this episode made waves by having Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) travel back in time from Star Trek: Lower Decks to hang with the original crew of the Enterprise! This episode features cartoons going IRL and back again, the ST:LD characters making endless Star Trek references, the crew trying to throw Pike a birthday party, Mariner getting Enterprise crew members drunk, and Spock experimenting with emotions in order to please Nurse Chapel!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

There's the episode in which Harry gets the space sti.

I'm glad that Star Trek is still around for the current generation of viewers but I have to admit... it's not for me. As always, it is awesome hearing about it on the Nexus!

Chris Vincenti

Lower decks can kiss my ass.

Mark D Myers

It was a similar situation as to the the death of time travelling Chief O'Brian, in that everyone knew it was a different person but just went with it. That episode you are talking about is a heartbreaker, it starts with a baby death and ends with the death of everyone.

Mark Scott

I would love if there was a poll every month so we could suggest fan favorite episodes of DS9 and Voyager.

Mark Scott

I was ambivalent about getting into Lower Decks because the humour seemed VERY not-for-me, but after watching this episode of SNW, that's gonna be a hell no from me, dawg. Unbearable.

Marty TC

Wasn't Harry Kim such a wet rag that he died and was replaced with a transporter clone, and no one really noticed?

MarkNM

I always write in 2 Voyager episodes and 2Ds9s. One that I think is amicrocosm of the greatness of the series, what i think are high quality pieces of Trek. And then one that's silly and would make a good episode of the Nexus. So thrilled you picked one of mine this month. It was definitely the latter. There are much better episodes of Voyager of you're looking for the good stuff. Chris and Steve might be getting a bad taste of Voyager and DS9 from mostly getting the sillier episodes during listener request month? Either way, hope you enjoyed the voyager episode for what was. It sure made for a fun listen. Dakotah in Nashville

For what it's worth in regards to Lower Decks, the first two seasons were heavy in the "remember that?!" callouts, but it seems by the later half of S2 and Seasons 3 and 4 it felt like the writers felt comfortable not leaning on that as a crutch for the jokes & plots.

I know that all the boys had watched Star Trek in various capacity. But I love that through The Nexus, they've become so Trek savvy that they hear "naussicans" and immediately refer to Picard being stabbed in the heart.. 😂

Stephane Riopel

When TOS is done you guys need to do Voyager, if only because every Kate Mulgrew impression kills me.

Davidandwaffles

Why didn't they just send the doctor in to begin with? Sending in living breathing flesh Seems like a terrible idea when you have him there

Ray

Steve was asking if the show was always this silly, the very next episode is about PTSD and war atrocities

Felipe Sobreiro

it's too bad Steve hates Voyager bc I would love to see them recap that as well one day

Convincing John

I rent on YouTube because of that lol

Ray

fingers crossed that when they run out of TOS, they do TNG & DS9

Convincing John

I have enjoyed Lower Decks and SNW immensely. Like Chris, I could never get into the Voyager crew and never watched the show. But, LD and SNW are single-handedly (double-handedly) getting me to split a Paramount sub with my brother, which has had a fringe benefit of letting me watch a bunch of WHM ep movies without giving that a-hole Bezos rental $.

Smaug

Allamaraine!

It could be cool to do a top 10 TOS episodes special when you guys complete the series, like the horror franchise ranking episodes you did a few years ago.

Fintan McGrath

In terms of ‘trapped in a simulation’ episodes that test your patience, The Thaw is up there with that DS9 episode where they get trapped in a board game. Just grating. But like Andrew I’m tickled that everyone enjoyed Those Old Scientists - SNW and Lower Decks are just delightful

Salacious B. Cumb

if i remember correctly, Harry plays the clarinet cause the actor was musically inclined. but you ain't wrong about Kim being so gameless but such a simp. I always laughed when Paris would call back to all the times kim fell in love...a borg, a hologram, an alien lifeform...

Frank Grimes

You all showed great restraint! No one said "IT in space without the gangbang." Thx guys The Nexus is my favorite show!
