Episode #730: Young Einstein

“If you are not 100% always entertained by [Yahoo Serious] you are fucked for good with this movie!” - Chris

On this week’s episode, the 2024 Listener Request Month comes to a close with a discussion about the well-made (craft-wise), but incredibly stupid comedy, Young Einstein! How much of a banger is this soundtrack? How gorgeous are these panoramic shots of Tasmania? How many times can Yahoo Serious fall through or off something in this movie? How funny is that little Critters-esque Tasmanian Devil costume? And come on, what are the odds a Cat Pie is a real dish? PLUS: An extended analysis of Jake Gyllenhaal not bathing.

Young Einstein stars Yahoo Serious, Odile Le Clezio, John Howard, Peewee Wilson, Su Cruickshank, Roger Ward, and Basil Clarke as Charles Darwin; directed by Yahoo Serious.

Episode #730: Young Einstein

Comments

I saw this at the cinema. I was young. I . . . well, I didn't hate it. A recent revisit showed that I should have maybe kept it in my memory, but it certainly tries to be quirky and fun throughout.

Kevin Matthews

Thank you for reminding me to keep pestering y'all to do an episode on Wake In Fright, my second favorite movie of all time.

Felix Forrester

Hi! Big baseball fan here! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I’m going through the past archives lol so I am happy I have some good episodes to come back to like this.

Chris Boise

As soon as I heard that, my first thought was "Is he hinting there's gonna be a Gene Hackman movie in this round?"

Todd B

Spence was probably the guy that blocked Serious from being in a later Mad Max movie. Serious goes in, sees Spence coming out of the audition and thinks "Welp. There goes my shot."

Todd B

That reruns beat, taken with the knowledge that West campaigned for years after the show ended to still be Batman for a big budget movie, had to have stung just a little.

Todd B

"GAME MASTER'S CLUE." "*Now* I'm hard." I love you guys lmao

Tim O'

Kind of amazing that yall have never covered W.

Jamie

Anyone see X-men 97 episode 3 yet? This is the sickest fucking show I’ve experienced in years. Imagine if they made the Marvel movies like this? I’m kinda bummed Xmen can’t just be in their own separate cinematic universe and will inevitably be crammed into the Avengers mold

RJ Cunningham

I don't want to meet Steve anymore after hearing his pie take, j/k

Smaug

You guys joked about the “summer of Batman” but you guys were just a little too young to remember just how insane “Batman fever”’got that summer. The movie was huge. Merch was fucking everywhere. Every UHF and Basic cable station seemed to be marathoning the 60s show . Malls and department stores would pay guys to dress up as Batman and do “autograph” signings to get people into stores.

Dan sulin

Major League! Fuck yes!

Nathan Lemire

Eric is correct. Pie > Cake

TDB

As an Australian I was very disappointed with Oppenheimer for their false history and spreading false information, cause we all know that young Einstein is the true story.

Cooper87

I hope they take some comfort from Wake in Fright (my Dad's favourite film since he saw the original in theatres) still being watched, and this is not.

Renee Maunder

As an Australian, I’ve been looking forward to this one. You can rest assured that his home country forgot about Yahoo Serious just as quickly as the rest of the world. (Reckless Kelly had hype but was universally panned even down here as I recall)

Craig

Never thought I’d see the day when WHM would be talking about Big Pig! Even in Australia they’re largely forgotten.

Craig

I swear to god I thought this movie starred Yakov Smirnov until this morning

Matt

As a big baseball fan, I’m very excited for Major League. As a big WHM fan, I’m very excited to hear the gang’s take since none of them like baseball very much.

jribs

This episode's setting up the inevitable end of season match between We Love Hot Dogs vs. We Hate Cakes, and I'm all here for it.

John Edwards

This movie needs Bruce Spence

Kevin Lynch

"Speaking of erect nipples!" The new trailer game motto. And I am starting every conversation today with this. Confusing the hell out of my wife.

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

The wraith would be great! I just watched it recently and the whole "this is as close as I could get to looking like my old self" part is goddamned hilarious 😂

Purple Roundy

Somehow I assumed Yahoo Serious was the Australian Yakov Smirnov, so was very surprised to discover this movie being halfway competent, still pretty bad, but nowhere near what I was expecting.

Phillip

I've never done heroin, but hearing the VHS Trailer game theme song makes me feel like Vincent tying off at Lance's house

Matt

So excited about Sheen month! Hoping for The Wraith, but also The Rookie, Terminal Velocity, The Arrival, and Beyond the Law would all be great movies to do.

Matt Reid

I don't know if you guys acknowledge it in the episode but I just found out that Preston, the dandy villain in this movie, is the same guy who played THE PEOPLE EATER in Mad Max Fury Road (!)

Felipe Sobreiro

Please send this to the mailbag. I am CACKLING at this comment

Matt

Thank goodness. I was starting to think that if no one specifically requested the VHS Trailer Game, it wouldn't be part of the month.

MarkNM

I have unironically loved this movie for the last 35 years. And yes, the soundtrack is filled with banger after bangers.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Oh that cheeky humor.

MarkNM

As Einstein once said, Vegemite is more important than knowledge

Eren Keskin

Things I remember from this movie: making beer with bubbles, and Yahoo Serious plays a bitchin guitar solo to defuse an atomic bomb.

DMAC

Big Pig also did Breakaway - the opening song in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Andrew Dean

Sounds like you got yourself a real Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter problem on your hands..

Nathan Lemire

Trying to rewatch this the other day w my gf (same age but she never saw) was utterly humiliating. Made it less than 15 minutes.

Milan Davidek

Been looking forward to this one. Haven't seen this film in over 30 years. I'm sure it's not as good as I remember.

John Locke

surprising amount of man ass in this children's movie...

Ajax

I really wish this movie was entertaining. And in night vision.

Ray

Yes! I remember loving this movie but I think I only watched it twice because my mom HATED it and threw the vhs out of the car window on the freeway.

Queen Taru

As a young Australian kid seeing this in the theatre confused me.

Scott Ferris

Oh yeah, I remember that Yahoo Serious moment in time...the weirdness of the late 80s/early 90s is underrated.
