Episode #726: Night Game

“We’re playing pool with Captain Heart Attack here…” - Eric on this movie’s police captain

On this week’s episode, we’re kicking off the 2024 Listener Request Month with a dirty-ass 1970’s-feeling cop movie that came out in 1989, Night Game! Why is Roy Scheider’s character making such a big deal out of this gifted television set? Can that future mother-in-law just take it down a notch or two? Why is that police chief character looking like he’s about to have a heart attack in every scene? Why does this movie focus so much on Roy Scheider’s upcoming wedding? And is this actually a slasher movie? PLUS: Hilarious fuck-ups from famous serial killers!

Night Game stars Roy Scheider, Karen Young, Richard Bradford, Paul Gleason, Carlin Glynn, Anthony Palmer, Alex Morris, Rex Linn, and Lane Smith as Witty; directed by Peter Masterson.

THANK YOU, GUYS, I watched this a couple beers in and felt like I was on crazy pills trying to keep track of the unintentional red herrings

Roy Scheider on SeaQuest: "Aw no, not another dolphin assault!"

haha oh GAWD, I forgot that he yells "you can do it"! - Andrew

Not only is Giuliani in Anger Management, he also shouts Rob Schneider's famous, "you can do it!" line. At least he didn't deliver it with a Cajun accent, but man...

Z

I wanted to watch it prior to listening to the guys but I just gave up at 30:11.

William K. Wolfrum

Always saw the VHS for this back in the day but never rented it. It sounds like the sort of thing that should be an adaptation of a book (a poorly done one given the lack of focus you guys mentioned) and it is weird that it isn't.

Ed Harris

“Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” turns 30 this year. Maybe a 30th anniversary episode?

Efren Valenzuela Jr

You could say that Fever Pitch was the nadir of both baseball movies and the Farrelly Brothers filmmaking. (Although they were already beginning to make some shit films) I remember they cut to Drew Barrymore and Fallon acting/kissing each other on the Fox broadcast after the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. Like they were showing players celebrating , and then those two.

Glad you're digging ad-free! It was a long time coming, so we're stoked people are being receptive to it. I will say, if we ever called an episode a Director's Cut on here, guaranteed we'd face an onslaught of questions regarding "what was left out" of the free-feed episode and we'd go crazy! - Andrew

Woo-hoo! - Andrew

Yes, good call on the too much family drama. Man, gotta go back to The Presidio. Another Dadfernoon contender. - Andrew

Roy Scheider was indeed cinema's well-oiled, broken-in, reliable old baseball glove.

I gotta say, the ad-free experience is lovely. I know it isnt the case, but it feels like I’m getting extra content. At the very least, i’m getting the podcast in full. How it was in the room. As you four gentlemen intended it to be consumed. A Directors Cut, if you will. Y’know what, that’s a free one there. “WHM Episode #726 (Directors Cut): Night Game”. Hell, call it Sans-Mercials, if you want. Its great.

Samuel McGuire

Don't fall for it, it's all lies, like reverse mortgages

Smaug

Great ep! Even though I thought this movie was as boring as a baseball game, it sounds like you all had fun recording this one. You guys were wondering why the mafia plotline was left in this movie, I was wondering why they bothered leaving the baseball plotline in. Baseball is completely irrelevant to this baseball murder movie until the last 20 minutes. Chris wins this one for me with the "I have this computer here that will tell you what your movie is about" joke

Smaug

This show is at its best when it points me to fun, trashy schlock like this, which I had no idea existed until now.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Jack Lemmon on those jazz cigarettes

Jason

Canadian here so my sports based religion was assigned at birth, but I'll be damned if you guys didn't make baseball sound romantic and interesting. It's not, but doesn't it sound grand?

Matt

For some reason now I want to watch Nighthawks, Night Shift, and well, maybe not Night Mother.

MarkNM

Roy Scheider is a real Sorcerer of an actor 😀👉👉

Tim O'

Steve’s Scheider sounded like a bebop version of Jack Lemmon

RJ Cunningham

I consider myself a huge Roy-Head and this was just one of his that I not only missed but ZERO idea of its existence. It's not good but it was a kick to watch! :) The funny thing is that it is BARELY a thriller....it kind of reminded me of The Presidio. Mark Harmon, Meg Ryan, and Connery....it's like 70% family drama but then like this, suddenly remembers that it has to be a thriller for the last 15 minutes. 😆

Geoff Gershon

“Night Game” and “Night Moves” - good dadfernoon double feature.
