Patreon Poll for the Weekend of March 1
Added 2024-03-01 20:00:19 +0000 UTCWell, folks, the weekend is finally here: Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two hits screens everywhere and it's looking like it's going to be the kick in the ass the U.S. box office has sorely needed!
As it is the first big box office event of the year (sorry to all the Beekeeper obsessives out there), it's looking to make a good bit of scratch this coming weekend. Thursday numbers reported are already showing the film grossed around $12 million and its advanced ticket sales have blown past Dune: Part One's by almost 116%, so I think it's safe to say this film is not in any danger of terribly under-performing. All that in mind, just how big is this movie going to be?
Current projections are showing an opening weekend somewhere in the range of $71M-$86M, so what do you think? How will the next chapter in the fight for the soul of Arrakis do this weekend? Vote below and happy Dune-ing! - Andrew

It just barely beat the $82 million. My friend that runs a theater said her standard showings were empty but the premium showings were sold out.

2024-03-02 17:00:24 +0000 UTCRight, but take into consideration the years that that film has had to drum up word of mouth and rope in new fans, along with creating anticipation for this one, plus the fact that a lot of the younger cast is now much more famous than they were a couple years ago (Flo and Austin now in the cast as well), and how WB didn't let people forget the film was coming, despite its release date push back, and you have yourself a perfect storm to easily go above $71M. I guess we'll have to see! - Andrew

2024-03-02 16:32:33 +0000 UTCAs much as I despised it, that Ghostbusters Afterlife was a big hit, so there's certainly competition coming. - Andrew

2024-03-02 16:29:19 +0000 UTCIt's definitely happening. At this point, I'd be genuinely surprised if they don't go forward. - Andrew

2024-03-02 14:41:36 +0000 UTCI saw the second showing this morning at a theater with middling popularity in my area. It wasn't sold out, but pretty full.

2024-03-02 02:39:16 +0000 UTCThe IMAX sales will make this one huge. Shai-hulud and Hans Zimmer were tag-teaming my chair's structural integrity for two-and-a-half hours last night.

2024-03-01 21:07:19 +0000 UTCMy guess is about 72 mil, but it'll have some staying power for a few weeks that'll it'll be fine on top of intl sales. Looking ahead on the calendar I don't see any obvious contenders to topple it unless the new Ghostbusters somehow catches fire. Maybe until Godzilla x King Kong it'll stay #1.

2024-03-01 20:42:36 +0000 UTCSeeing it tomorrow and can't wait. Can see it over performing and hitting $100 million.

2024-03-01 20:27:50 +0000 UTCI feel like the runtime might keep some normies away, but it's still gonna be a huge deal. I can't wait for tomorrow 🥳

2024-03-01 20:27:31 +0000 UTCI dunno. Barbie-heimmer flipped everything on its head. We don’t have a “normal” anymore.

2024-03-01 20:11:19 +0000 UTCI'm going along with being optimistic that it'll do better than projected. Every person I know that is a theater going type is planning on seeing it. I almost never do opening weekends because I work all weekend, but I'm squeezing it in Sunday morning, I've had my tickets for a month or so. I also already have tickets to see it a second time later this week in 70mm. Unfortunately, Arizona's only true IMAX screen is absolute trash, so I don't have that option.

2024-03-01 20:07:47 +0000 UTCI think it will hit around $78 million and have an excellent second weekend.
