Patreon Poll for the Weekend of February 23!
Added 2024-02-23 11:00:07 +0000 UTCHey folks, big thanks to everyone who participated in last week's first ever box office poll! We're gonna try and keep the fun going this week with another poll that we'll cover the results of during next Monday's On-Screen Live! Here we go:
This Friday finally sees the release of Drive-Away Dolls, Ethan Coen's first solo narrative directorial effort away from brother Joel. And while Dolls seems to vibe more in-line with a traditional Coen Brothers' crime/comedy, as opposed to Joel's first solo effort, the most excellent, but highly serious, The Tragedy of Macbeth, questions remain around what exactly this film will do at the box office. Can Focus Features give Ethan a solo hit off this film, which he co-wrote with his wife, Tricia Cooke, back in the 90s, or is this little indie that was bought by a mid-major studio falling on its face?
Tracking is putting the film's opening weekend anywhere between 2 and 5 million dollars, so what do we think, folks? Will we be talking about Drive-Away Dolls in the Top 5 during Highest Gross next week? Weigh in at the poll below and see on Monday how your predictions play out!

It is really weird how this is playing out - it seems like they budgeted all for the initial release and didn't really have a contingency for the delay. Per the On Screen discussion yesterday, this has me wondering if the people behind Challengers are planning any sort of new build up or if they're going to get caught in the same snag.

2024-02-27 11:50:45 +0000 UTC2.4 is essentially under 2mil, I'm claiming victory.

2024-02-26 22:20:07 +0000 UTCI worked 6 days on it, I don’t think I had a call time earlier than 10, and my days also ran fairly short. I was there for a pretty specific reason though. Also, having watched the movie, there didn’t seem to be a lot of scenes where they needed a lot of extras, and that always makes things easier and faster. I was there for the She Shed and Conquistador stuff.

2024-02-26 18:59:16 +0000 UTCThere has been a hard push locally in Pittsburgh for the movie, where it was filmed. It's worth mentioning that this was a joy of a movie for people who worked on it. Days rarely went to 12 hours, and many were only 10, which is not generally common for movies, but is apparently fairly common for the Coens. While the movie wasn't perfect, it was a big swing and I'll take a bit swing over a milquetoast, down the middle movie any day.

2024-02-25 15:44:44 +0000 UTCSaw this last night and I didn't love as much as I was hoping to. :\ Funny, but not laugh-out-loud hilarious like I'm used to with the Bros.

2024-02-23 19:07:02 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, I have to agree that it didn't have enough promotion, so I think it'll underperform. It did have some decent promotion back before it was originally going to release, like Andrew said in a comment, but that was so long ago, I don't know if it'll translate. I have been eagerly awaiting it since last summer but everytime I mention it to someone, they are clueless to what I'm talking about. To be fair, many of the people I spend my time around don't have their thumbs on the pulse of cinema though. I hope I'm wrong and its closer to/above $5mil but I think it'll be more like $2-3.5 range.

2024-02-23 17:45:26 +0000 UTCI never even heard of this until Pedro posted the trailer like, last week. Looks like it’ll be fun to stream later, for me at least.

2024-02-23 17:13:19 +0000 UTC$2-3.5 million is about right. Focus isn't the kind of studio that has the budget for major advertising blitzes, yet this film benefits a bit from being the only new wide release this weekend.

2024-02-23 14:42:47 +0000 UTCSaw it last night and I'm gonna have to say, I was upset they were out of the Dune popcorn buckets.

2024-02-23 14:42:30 +0000 UTCSpeaking of that, I was also working on season two of Mayor of Kingstown at the time, where I was mostly used as a cop, and there was a day where they were looking for a photo double for Jeremy Renner, which I kind of matched up with, but it was a day where I was already booked on the Coen movie. I’m really kicking myself, because I could have had a chance to stand in for 100% of the leads of the Bourne movies, not just 80% of them. Season 3 is currently filming here though, and I guess they’re leaning on stand-ins and doubles more this time around, because Renner is still in pretty rough shape, so I might still have my chance!

2024-02-23 13:52:20 +0000 UTCwhoa, cool being Matt's stand in!

2024-02-23 13:47:29 +0000 UTCSpeaking of the trailer, when I worked on the movie, there were a lot of things that I thought were going to be surprises that we were told not to talk about, but then they were right there in the trailer. Like, it’s a Coen movie, they can get anybody for any small part, and you never know who they’re going to promote as being in the film. There was a big cameo I was there for where the actor worked for one scene, and it’s still in the trailer, which is crazy.

2024-02-23 13:45:04 +0000 UTCI feel like with no real new competition and ticket prices being what they are they can just kind of fall backwards into $3-5M

2024-02-23 13:44:12 +0000 UTCI hope there’s SOME talk about it! I auditioned for a small part in the movie that I didn’t get, but ended up being Matt Damon‘s stand-in for the few days he was there, so I’ve got some stories that I can maybe send into the mailbag or something. A lot of the stuff I was around for is very spoilery, so it’s obviously better if someone’s seen the film, which I plan on seeing tonight.

2024-02-23 13:40:35 +0000 UTCI've seen this advertised more than Aquaman or Madame Web, which strikes me as odd.

2024-02-23 13:03:00 +0000 UTCI think a key thing to think about here is that there were trailers going back when this was first going to be released last September, and then the strikes happened and it was bumped. So throughout July/August, when there was a lot of moviegoing happening, especially with Barbenheimer and all that, people were seeing this trailer quite a bit. Then the date gets bumped and the trailers were pulled. So you have to wonder if people seeing TV ads or whatever just kind of give a cursory glance and think, "Oh, I remember hearing about this ages ago, didn't this come out already?" So that might be something to consider here, regardless of ads running now, is just what level of awareness the public has with the film at the moment. I'll be seeing it in just a few hours! - Andrew

2024-02-23 12:50:22 +0000 UTCFocus is behind a lot of great stuff, but I’ve never seen the trailer until here. Road comedy with lesbians? I’m totally down to watch.

2024-02-23 12:19:47 +0000 UTCthink it'll be okay. Didn't really see a lot of hype/advertisements for it. From the movies I've been to, the trailer's been in front of maybe 2-3 movies.
