Episode #723: Notting Hill

“This [movie] is as important to the Special Relationship as anything that ever happened in the 90s” - Chris

On this week’s episode, we’re chatting about one of the most financially successful but also grating rom-coms of all time, Notting Hill! How is Hugh Grant keeping this travel bookstore in business? Was anyone gonna buy that cool Beavis and Butt-head stained glass window? Why is Jules acting so tired and bored in this one? And how did they let the final edit come out this shoddy? PLUS: Steve gives a British door update!

Notting Hill stars Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, James Dreyfus, Gina McKee, Tim McInnerny, Emma Chambers, Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Clarke Peters, Mischa Barton, and Rhys Ifans as Spike; directed by Roger Michell.

Episode #723: Notting Hill

It’s annoying that you can’t post images here because I live in London and my front door has a peep hole! We exist!

I cannot wait to hear next week's episode, I loved Safehouse. Such a fun bad movie. Can't wait to hear all the Pat Stew impressions to go flying. Also he's D.I.A., Defense Intelligence Agency and he will emphatically point it out every damn time. Lol

Dr. Poole

I remember my mom dragging me kicking and screaming to see this movie in the theater (I was 12). I then proceeded to have one of the best theater experiences of my life, I’ve rarely enjoyed a movie so much. It just completely worked on me, I was charmed by the romance, and on the floor laughing at the jokes.

Going after Richard Curtis twice in three months makes me wonder if you'd ever do an episode on About Time. The time travel romance in that might be creepier than anything going on in Love Actually.

I don't think Chris's heart could take it. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I hate to point it out but the English guys in the restaurant would not have been “jerking off” to Sissy Spacek, they’d be “havin’ a wank”!

Craig

I have to give him a pass despite hating most of his movies because of Blackadder.

Craig

We gotta talk about Richard Curtis. He started out ok with Four Weddings and a Funeral (perhaps tempered by Mick Newell? [Forthcoming director of --the actual best--Harry Potter movie #4]). Then did this flick 💀, then caused a whole generation of women body issues by screenwriting Bridget Jone's Diary, then rammed it home with Love Actually. Maybe he's the true villain of the late 90s/early 2000s for cinema?

I'd Rather Have No Name

Black Books? Classic British comedy starting Dylan Moran an Irish comic who owns a bookstore and hates people. Very funny

Catboyslim

Yep, this is why I could actually watch My Best Friend’s Wedding more than once.

HockeenightsCT

Juli-ly themed month 😉

Chris Tobias

Notes on a Scandal is not the "horny on main" I was expecting today.

Infinite Terror

I think the announcement of not working is based on when Princess Diana did that, and someone in the press had the exact response Stephen did, why are you announcing you're leaving the public life?

I.C. Weiner

I didn't upgrade to ad free and the longest ad break I've gotten is 1 minute and no ads once the program starts. They're fleecing you for that $3

I.C. Weiner

Looking forward to your Texas tour dates. Still debating on going to the Austin one or having time to do both dates as I love both movies. There is a Muldoons in Houston, actually sorta/not really close to the Houston Improv!

Daniel Garcia

Awww I liked Danny Deckchair. Then again I caught in randomly late night on cable and may or may not have been several tall glasses of water deep.

Les Whinen

Travels with Charley by Dickens? Lol Chris love ya

Aidan

I only enjoy Julia Roberts when she plays acidic and unlikable characters. When she's trying to be charming, I find her acidic and unlikable.

MarkNM

i succumbed to sleazy Amazon's $2.99 upcharge too. Fuck'em. They should've positioned the 2.99 for the non-prime members...like how they have 3 tiers for their music service...Free w/ Ads, Prime ad free, then unlimited, a separate charge from Prime, but wholly unnecessary.

Frank Grimes

Fun fact about this film which got it banned in my house is that in real life Notting Hill is pretty diverse (see: Notting Hill carnival) and Richard Curtis cleared out all the non-white people from the background to keep it a white film. So I was very pleased with the summary of the opening - happy people notice!

Kathryn Finch

Ooooo - as a Brit, I had no clue what they were talking about 😂 I hate door knobs!

Kathryn Finch

“standing in front of a boy”

We Hate Movies

Yup, made a scheduling flub in the system. Thanks for pointing it out! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Anybody else get an early notification about this posting yesterday? The Gang needs to lay off the tall glasses of water a little bit :P

Dominic Kovell

I will gladly co-sign this petition. Notting Hill would mostly work if anyone but Jules starred in it.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

I have never found Julia Robert’s endearing. Someone had to say it!

RJ Cunningham

Genuinely this is one of my favorite comfort movies, excited to hear them riff on it! Theres lots of material here

Joel Myers

Simply delighted to hear the doorknob rant because I went into a confused rage every time I saw someone use that weird latch thing in this movie!

Busiris

I love that Steve also watched Shut Up and Sing! There are dozens of us!

Jaime Lee Ezell

I’m surprised no VHS Trailer Game in this episode.

Paul

“I’m just girl, looking at a boy, asking for him to love her.” -I swear I typed that from memory alone.
