Episode #722: Blast from the Past

“Now here’s my question… bellhops at a Holiday Inn?” — Andrew

On this week’s show, we’re chatting about the goofy sci-fi rom-com that should’ve been made as an eerie sci-fi thriller, Blast from the Past! Shouldn’t Christopher Walken’s character be brought up on charges? How has Brendan Fraser’s character not grown into a big, hulking baby psycho? Why do Fraser and Dave Foley both have terribly dyed jet-black hair in this movie? And could we just get a weird little movie about Joey Slotnick’s dive bar? PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game!

Blast from the Past stars Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek, Dave Foley, Joey Slotnick, and Nathan Fillion as Cliff; directed by Hugh Wilson.

Episode #722: Blast from the Past

Comments

I saw this one as a kid--family rental--and trying to avoid work this late night/early morn I thought, "Didn't the guys cover this one?" ... Turns out they did! :) I remember liking this one--was introduced to Brendan Fraser via the pretty excellent George of the Jungle -but it was a strange one. Can't wait to see how it fares! Love you guys, best of luck in England. Don't forget to wear the blue. :)

Zora McBride

You guys really need to see Passion of Darkly Noon. A similar premise that actually plays out in a terrifying manner. It is easily my favorite Brendan Fraser performance.

Bethany Culclasure

For some reason this episode made me want to see this train wreck of a film.

John Locke

I can confirm that Chris is right, the N-word line did feature in the trailer or at least a TV spot because I remember it, but have never seen the movie.

Craig

I watched this once at the theaters upon release and never again

Deitrich Tennin

Hey Alicia Silverstone has a fantastic performance in The Lodge. It'll blow your mind.

Jamie

Although I guess I could buy plane tickets and go so, bluff called!

RJ Cunningham

Hopefully that Dusk til Dawn show is recorded or they do it as an episode for the podcast. Like Steve, my most rented movie ever and would pay/sponsor for that episode to be made

RJ Cunningham

someone didn't rewind him

Matt

Wow! I'm genuinely shocked! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

The liquor lockdown Tom Siezemore Heat bit absolutely killed me at work in a very otherwise quiet room. HILARIOUS! Keep up the good work! (-o-)

Nathan Lemire

I demand a full accounting and Congressional investigation into how the reigning champion of the VHS Trailer Game had zero points in February of the current season. Shenanigans!

jribs

I saw this movie on release weekend in theatres! Requested a few times for listener request month so very happy to finally see the guys cover it. Glad it doesn’t hold because I recall at the time thinking it was weird as fuck

Alex Fry

I would just like to say, I am with Chris Cabin I’ve also been very disappointed by this season of True Detective

Joel Myers

the main story of this movie should’ve been Sissy Spacek cracking and leaving the bunker so Brendan has to go after her because Walken won’t leave the bunker. Blam.

Adam Pollock

I, not four days ago, stayed at a Holiday Inn in Memphis that had a bellhop and valet. It was odd.

Richard Buttry

It's nice to get away from 2023's awful movies and get back to general history's awful movies.

MarkNM

I watch this at least 3 times a year with my parents.... Should I call the movie psychiatrist?

Montserrat Morales

I always wanted to try getting lit by drinking nothing but cooking sherry.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Steve you magnificent bastard, the return of the VHS Trailer Game! I'm so glad my favorite Jame Master recovered from his VCR hemorrhage or whatever the medical complications were

Smaug

Deciding to open your light romcom with a more manic version of 12 Cloverfield Lane is certainly one hell of a directing choice.

John Edwards

Fondly(?) remembering when this was inexplicably my boomer parents' emotional support movie after 9/11. Eager for a remake where they are hiding from y2k and one of the kids from stranger things needs to learn to navigate TikTok

Juliana Duffy

I never watched Eight Days a Week but according to IMDB, Buck Kartalian is credited as "Nonno"

Felipe Sobreiro

I dunno, those Fallout games are pretty funny, including the first one from 1997

Smaug

Immediately reminded of hot Dr. Pepper

Tala Hobballah

i actually think this works as a light romantic comedy. There are a million movies/shows, not to mention every damn video game, about people living in a bunker during some apocalyptic event. They are all very serious and very boring. Either it’s not a bunker or it’s not an apocalypse, and it’s always the robot’s fault. I welcome Brendan Fraser pitching woo at Alicia Silverstone.

AlsoNamedB0rt

I would have bet the FARM that Slotnick's character was played by Giamatti. Better movie?

Matt

I like this movie but Brendan Fraser basically exclusively played cartoon characters until like....he graduated to pulp comic characters in The Mummy and they don't saddle him with any other real human cartoon type of people other than Walken so the movie can't sustain cartoon logic

G Goldhar

You absolutely need to do Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I'd pay $20 a month for content like that.

Truck McGuffin

VHS Trailer Game is back, bay-bee!!

Derek Baxter

Would this have worked if Brendan Fraser’s character had grown up in the 40s and then the family just got cryogenically frozen by Christopher Walken’s character in the 60s and they all unfreeze in the 90s

DR

remember watching this on hbo a handful of times.
