Episode #720: Saw X

“Poor Beethoven and Droopy are never gonna get high again!” - Chris, on the crooked veterinarian in this movie

On this week’s episode, we’re ending our survey of some of last year’s biggest stinkers with a real wild one on the [EDITOR’S NOTE: Not too terrible! - Andrew] ninth sequel in this most miserable film franchise, Saw X! How fun is it to see John Kramer actually walking around the room while his traps are being executed? How is no one noticing Amanda running through that dance club with the Pig Mask get-up on? Who signs their last will and testament at a blustery, outside cafe? How funny is it to have Jigsaw shopping at a crummy liquor store? And how many sequels can they squeeze in between all these other sequels? PLUS: Jigsaw gives Letterboxd his Top Four!

Saw X stars Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Renata Vaca, Joshua Okamoto, Octavio Hinojosa, Paulette Hernandez, Jorge Briseño, Costas Mandylor, Michael Beach, and Steven Brand as Parker Sears; directed by Kevin Greutert.

Episode #720: Saw X

every time you mentioned John Cramer my brain sang "Cooooonnstaaaant Craaaamiiiing" and I will never forgive you guys for that even tho you didn't put the song in my head

Johnny Wrong

Lying about being a double is one of my FAVORITE bits

Matthew Taylor

I'm going to watch Jigsaw tonight to see how that stacks up. Thus far I have Saw and Saw 10 as the best. And by quite a bit, actually.

William K. Wolfrum

I think you might be totally right, G! - Andrew

We kind of don't explain our reasoning well enough there. Yeah, the real stinker comedies, like the outrageous things like crazy rom-coms or like a Chairman of the Board, those are easy episodes to do. But if the movie isn't WILD enough or doesn't have a big enough premise, sometimes it feels like we're just sitting there pointing out things we don't find funny, which we don't really think is particularly entertaining for people. But yeah, a Carrot Top film or whatever? We can talk those to death. - Andrew

Yup, problem there is that when we transferred the free feed from OMNY to our new hosts at AudioBoom, we weren't told that all existing ads were going to be pulled over also (they are not baked into the audio files in the OMNY system, but rather rotate in and out digitally). When we transferred feeds, every single digitally inserted ad came with it and baked itself into the new AudioBoom feed episodes. So, we're now in the incredibly slow process of manually editing every single episode on that feed to remove the dated read up front, but you'll have to bear with us as there are literally hundreds of episodes and each edit takes a few minutes a piece. It's gonna be a while. Spread the word! - Andrew

Anyone else still getting ads for The Santa Clause live show on every episode on the free feed? (Yes I know I can listen ad free via Patreon, but I often listen to older eps and everyone is starting with “Deck the halls”)

Craig

Sawfleet Academy easily has enough juice to be the location of Saws 12 through 14, with Saw 11 being the Dog Saw bit from the last Saw episode.

Tim O'

You can not just dangle this John Candy series in front us, guys.

Infinite Terror

Good on Andrew for inventing BreakSAWfest. Wake up, get some coffee, maybe a breakfast sandwich of your choosing, then tuck in for morning Jigsaw.

Jason

Got say the episodes about terrible comedys are some of my favorites.

Mark D Myers

Andrew was remembering BCS's Dr. Caldera correctly. He's the guy offering to sell Mike dog Vicodin in the first season, and he pops up a couple more times later. Easily one of my favorite side characters in that show.

John Edwards

I thought he was trying to figure out where the facility was by drawing the scenery that he could see from both places. Because he sees that little radio tower when he's at the house and sees it again when he's out of it

G Goldhar

Great episode, but Steve's cheerful fatalism is missed in any scenario where "This is the part where I'd just do it myself" pops up.

MarkNM

Wes Anderson did do a home invasion movie. The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders

Les Whinen

I for one would love to see Jigsaw and Amanda trying their respective Michael Caine impressions in the Italian countryside

Felipe Sobreiro

I'll admit I enjoy all the Saw movies more or less. Even if you guys don't, they're always top shelf episodes. I also greatly appreciate that Andrew mildly goes to bat for this one ever since it came out.

Busiris

Honestly this is the only saw movie I found tolerable! Far from my favorite thing I’ve ever seen, but definitely a marked improvement over the usual dreck of this franchise

Joel Myers

Having seen this in theaters last Sept. after Andrew's mild recommendation the following Monday w/ON SCREEN LIVE after its opening weekend: I, personally, think it's the best in the franchise after the 2004 original. Keep in the mind, this is a franchise that I have more "eh" than "ah" for -- as the series was (sigh) a standard for mass multiplex horror in the 2000s. That may not be saying to much, but this has (AT LEAST) some character development than the other sequels. Excluding SPIRAL, it doesn't hurt this was written by the two writers who wrote that -- but also wrote JIGSAW, which I consider the 3rd best in the franchise. That said (SPOILER ALERT): this being a prequel and us to believe Shawnee Smith is how she is age-wise between the 2004 film & 2005 film? GET OUT OF TOWN!!! Just my 2 cents... Excited for THE FLASH event this Thursday and the upcoming drawing for Listener Request Month! 😎🤗
