The Nexus #89 "The Way to Eden" / "Remember Me"

On this month's trip into the Star Trek Nexus, we're chatting about two very different episodes from this franchise!

First up on TOS, it's the completely insufferable episode, "The Way to Eden." Originally airing February 21, 1969, this episode has Kirk & Co. contending with some obnoxious space hippies, the Enterprise getting hijacked... A-gain, Chekov awkwardly running into an ex-girlfriend, and Charlies Napier singing some of the worst songs ever recorded!

Then, further ahead in the timeline on TNG, we're talking about the Twilight Zone-esque episode, "Remember Me." Not to be confused with the R-Pats movie of the same name, this episode premiered on October 20, 1990 and features a really fantastic Gates McFadden performance, Wesley nearly killing his own mother with this dumb warp drive experiment, Geordi getting ready to strangle the annoying ensign over the whole calamity, and the Traveler showing up to help rescue Beverly AND be creepy around Wes again!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

How in the fuck can ANYONE dislike the episode?! It’s one of the greatest hours of television ever broadcast! 🏆

What's good for the goose, is worth two in the bush.

MarkNM

He’s got the acting chops, notably the best animated guest star on the New Scooby Doo movies.

The TOS episode immediately goes up a star if you swap in Jerry Reed for Napier. Throw some fins and knobs and lights on Jerry’s axe, and let him fly!

Inspired by one of my zoomer work friends, I've tried (and failed) to incorporate "bet" into my vernacular.

Justine Prudhomme

Just an FYI, Colm Meaney's first name is pronounced exactly like the world column. "Call Em".

Fintan McGrath

DS9 is all about people who aren't satisfied with the Federation you guys are gonna love DS9.

The Wheel

My favorite lines from Beekeeper were, 1) "When someone hurts an older person in our society, sometimes they're left to face the hornets alone." and 2) "You kicked the beehive, now we have to reap the whirlwind." Fuck yeah Beekeeper, mixed metaphor

Smaug

Chris treating zoomer slang like it's the trigger for the Pontypool virus is delightful.

John Edwards

the bees aren't in Eden. but they are... in Beeden

One of my favorite TNG episodes

See, but it's exactly what we said, Joe! You use it jokingly for too long and you quickly start using it "jokingly"! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Y’all are crazy. “The Way to Eden” rules!

You guys are too old and bitter to be using ‘banger’ and ‘slaps’ btw. 😂😆🤣

In moving on to The Good Old Boys and crafting a country persona, Charles Napier followed a career path not too dissimilar to that of Kenny Rogers.

MarkNM

Basically Star Trek V is a retread of Journey to Eden. As far The Tommyknockers go, it does have Teaci Lords

James C Harris

Been waiting for this one!

Craig

HERBERT! HERBERT! HERBERT!

Mitchell Brown
