Episode #715: Hypnotic

“All the Nolans [movies] are present here; I’m surprised no one’s a fucking magician!” - Steve

On our first episode of the year, the four of us bend our understanding of reality to chat about a real massive let down, Robert Rodriguez’s Hypnotic! What in the world were they thinking with all these garbage twists? How much exposition can you expect one Dunkin’ Donuts-loving man to drop in a single movie? Does The X-Files’ Chris Carter have a case here? And is the public currently with Ben or did he lose everybody again? PLUS: Alex Jones is being railroaded by Hypnotics!

Hypnotic stars Ben Affleck, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Dayo Okeniyi, Jackie Earle Haley, Sandy Avila, and Jeff Fahey as Carl Everett; directed by Robert Rodriguez.

We hope you are enjoying Ad-Free WHM! Episode #715: Hypnotic

Comments

We do mention it briefly, I think we posit it's Ben Affleck behind the mask. I say it looks like a fencing uniform. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

🤣🤣🤣 I remember that!! Whew!!

Lynette Michelle

I don't think they mentioned the final upper layer twist with the people in the weird red masks, asking if she's ever been in love. That was the real reality right, wtf was up with that?

Will See

I can't wait for the Rebel Moon episode we're almost certainly going to get later this month.

G. T. Blackwell

This movie made me wonder if Ben Affleck is actually a good actor lol

Brittany Mitchell

Oh god, that sounds awful! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

They named it after that horrible blue liquor from the early 2000s

Paddy O'Rourke

Do people still make the "Incredible Hulk" cocktail that mixes Hypnotiq and Hennessy? I remember that being somewhat popular when I worked at a liquor store in grad school.

Jason

the covenant was great. It's Guy Ritchie's least Gut Ritchie film. If he didn't plaster his name in the title, i wouldn't have guessed it was him. It's a stark difference from his earlier 2023 film, Operation Fortune.

Frank Grimes

I'm watching it rn and my mouth is hanging open in confusion, disbelief, wonder, and existential dread. One might say I'm hypnotized. Also the credits rolled at 1:25 and so did my eyes, 2 long minutes later when fickner walks into the sunset.

Ray

I too long for the glory days of Rowdy Rowdy Robert Rodriguez.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Thanks for the episode because man I was trying to read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia and I was already getting a headache trying to decipher it.

Daniel Hood

Coming out of the gate strong, great ep! I just watched this movie at work before listening. Wow, what a bizarre soup sandwich that felt like it was made in 2008. Huge lol at Andrew's "you don't even really know because it's just one fuckin hotdog in a grey suit after another, but those guys were in the van earlier"

Smaug

Now I've got a real dilemma: do I still call in 2009's Push for LRM, or is a second psychic X-Men ripoff film stacking the deck too much?

John Edwards

One of the two major American theatrical releases last year that just got dumped to VOD in Canada (the other being The Covenant).

Z

I watched this a few weeks ago, it was so dumb and boring I forgot it immediately.

Will See

Thanks for taking this bullet, I'll be skipping Hypnotic like it was a Duff McKagan track on a Guns N Roses CD.

MarkNM

Bold words, sir.

Adam Lewis

This sounds terrible. Interestingly no one tries to define a range or persona for Affleck, probably because he doesn't have one outside the exhausted, aggrieved Dunkin guy.

Adam Lewis

In retrospect this movie makes that Matthew McConaughey SERENITY look good

Felipe Sobreiro

This 100% feels like a secret movie situation. For what and for whom.

Matt

"The Division? That's a cop showon CBS I'll never be able old enough to watch" was a good chickle from Andrew

James C Harris

my dad and i have AMC alist, and when this film was released, he randomly asked if i wanted to go see it. Had no idea what it was, never saw the trailer....Ketchup entertainment indeed. The plot was predictable and Ben had to be doing Robert a favor or something.

Frank Grimes

Anyone feel like the movie tried doing an “homage” to Twin Peak’s “got a light?” I know it’s a common phrase but I really can’t hear it anymore and not associate with Twin Peaks season 3

RJ Cunningham

Film feels like a combo of Paycheck and Repo Men which Affleck and Braga were in.

Paul Deehan

Gotta be honest I think Live by Night is pretty decent

RJ Cunningham

I foolishly watched this movie a few months back. I sometimes will revisit a movie just to refresh before the episode but I made an exception this time, lol. I am really enjoying you guys trying to piece together everything through the movie's completely haphazard logic.

Busiris

Watched this the day after Christmas. Oof.

Brendan Klein

Perfect timing. Can’t wait to learn about this movie through 4 of my favorite voices.
