Episode #711: Die Hard 2

“Like most motion pictures, this needed way more Reginald VelJohnson” - Andrew

On this week’s episode, we’re chatting about the high body count/low IQ, Christmas-set sequel, Die Hard 2! Why couldn’t they have developed a script where now-LAPD detective John McClane has some adventure on the streets of Los Angeles instead of a boring D.C. airport? How amazingly scuzzy and inept is Dennis Franz’s Carmine Lorenzo? Did they really need to go the sequelitis route of just repeating famous beats from the first film? And has there been a better villain introduction than William Sadler’s totally nude Colonel Stuart? PLUS: Dennis Franz storms out of a screening of the film Her!

Die Hard 2 stars Bruce Willis, Bonnie Bedelia, William Sadler, Franco Nero, John Amos, Reginald VelJohnson, William Atherton, Art Evans, Fred Thompson, Tom Bower, Sheila McCarthy, and Dennis Franz as Carmine Lorenzo; directed by Renny Harlin.

Episode #711: Die Hard 2

Comments

I never seen the film. My only experience with it was the teaser trailer on The Abyss VHS (link below) which made it sound really fucking awesome so interesting to hear it's not that great lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iH7S5NHSnI

Daniel Hood

I’m friends with Ryan O’Neal’s granddaughter. She said the family used to call him “Beast,” if that tells ya something about his reputation…

luxmeansbucks

Ryan O’Neal another WHM RIP. Haha

chris pike

Big Blocky Looking Things is the best name for "monitor" I've ever heard in my life. I want Chris to describe other office equipment in a similar style

Matt

One yes for Sheen month please.

Nathan Lemire

Ryan O’Neal got called out for being a fuck on a Monday Night, stewed on it, and let it kill him by Friday lmaooooo

Jacob Curry

Do NOT worry about Ryan O'Neal..

Kemper

Love to see a Charlie Sheen month as well. So much stuff to choose from.

Ed Harris

Ok so funny thing reg Johnson is my best friends granduncle and lives with them so if you ever were interested in talking to mister veljohnson for real, he’s mentioned “I don’t know, do I have to leave me house for this”…so that’s something. It’s not everyday you find an ardent RVJ fan so it rarely comes up

Lil John of Twerkshire

When Robert Bresson talked of "not beautiful images, but necessary ones," he was referring in fact to Dennis Franz's bare ass.

Z

You could do Sheentember and have one of the Hot Shots the week of 9/11

Lance Flexington

Yes to Sheen Month. The Wraith has Clint Howard and Randy Quaid, classic

Wade Gum

Oh yeah man, add my voice to the chorus on Sheenuary. This was a good ep, but after that discussion it was all I could think about. You'd probably have enough material for two months of top shelf eps if you wanted.

johnny stocker

Yes please to Sheen-uary

April

I wear the badge with pride. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

When they talk about the nude Karate scene, it dawned on me that Andrew’s love of physical 4K media makes him the honorary butthole inspector of WHM.

Jason

SHEEN! SHEEN! SHEEN!

David Anderson

You may be correct, aligning more wit the consensus. I love all those movies/shows you mentioned, and felt Gone Girl got some public love. But you’re certainly right about him not having the public attention any longer

RJ Cunningham

You Gotta Do It

Smaug

The show ever review The Killer? Also, is it just me or did Fincher get taken off the “must-see” list? He certainly not on that tier with Nolan, QT, Gerwig, when shouldn’t he be? Or, was I overrating how respected he was. I know doing Netflix killed his name value, to a degree I’m sure he did not expect, but damn, give the same script to every director in the world and I feel like he would be most likely to make it the most watchable. But also late 90s teen angst may have made Fincher lab-made for my sensibilities Also yes to Sheen month. Would love to revisit Men at Work. “In the glove compartemente.”

RJ Cunningham

1000 percent behind a Sheen month!

Richard Buttry

Very much loving all the Sheenuary interest! Hmm.... - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Another pro-Sheenuary vote here. I just watched the first half of The Arrival last night, lol at that construction paper alien knee bend. I'm 1,3,4,2 on these Die Hards, I watched 2 for the ep for the first time in many years. It's kinda dull and and the airport is the worst location of the franchise. I agree with Eric's spaces in between spaces assessment

Smaug

Please don’t let your airport experience sour you on returning to Milwaukee. Especially since I was moving the day of the show and could not attend.

andy

MAJOR LEAGUE for Sheenuary WLM

Christian Waters

sheenuary needs to have No man's land, got sheen with an added randy quad and db sweeney. The fast and furious is a copy of this amazing movie.

Cooper87

Big thumbs up for a future episode on The Arrival. A film from 1996 making global warming a central plot point is buck wild considering that it was barely a blip in the public consciousness at the time.

John Edwards

Hot Shots part Deux should be the WLM.

Efren Valenzuela Jr

The Wraith deserves so much attention! Loved that movie.

Efren Valenzuela Jr

This Patreon is worth it. Every single time. 🙌🏾

Jessie Drew (Forks)

Yes on Sheen month. I recently watched The Rookie for the first time and was planning to call it in for Listener Request month.

Darryl Bowen

Hope The Wraith makes an appearance during Sheenuary. Ghost cars, Nick Cassavetes and Clint Howard with an afro.

Hard To Gwil

Given the growth of DC-metro sprawl, I don't think you'd find an isolated farmhouse on the outskirts of Dulles Airport anymore.

Adam Lewis

Oh God no, not ... Norman Mailer!

Adam Lewis

You guys brought up a few Ryan O'Neal movies but not one of my top wishes for a WHM episode: TOUGH GUYS DON'T DANCE

Felipe Sobreiro

Crap, I had managed to completely purge Trash Humpers from my memory, and now, it's back. 🙃

Justine Prudhomme

I'd you do a Sheensuary, you have to do 1990s Cadence. It's got Charlie and Martin so it's a double does of that Sheeny goodness

Les Whinen

I know the guys don’t care at all but I still really love Die Hard 2 haha. Maybe I saw it at the right age (or wrong one since I was 7) but the action really holds up for me. I still love the formula of McClane stuck in a bad situation and nobody believes him. And that icicle still haunts me

Brandon Cranford

How I feel about Rocky III.

MarkNM

Not gonna lie, waggling my wedding ring dismissively at an attractive stranger who's hitting on me is on the bucket list, and will likely remain unchecked.

MarkNM

Please sheenuary in Jan or February 2024

MKEJay11

Always knew Steve was a fan of Cubism.

Jason

While objectively DH 1 is better, DH2 might be my fave. Has my fave sequence with the seat ejection scene...the line about "another basement, another elevator, how can the same shit happen to the same guy twice"...and you could argue it helped establish Yippy Ki Yay...as the final fuck you to the bad guy in the series.

Frank Grimes

I cannot wait for Sheenuary.

David

I kinda like the film in spite of it basically doing the same film over again. My third favorite of the series (big gap between that and my four and five picks, the fourth is okay and the fifth is hot garbage). Still pissed I bothered to see it in theaters.

Ed Harris

Banger of an episode!!! Thanks guys

Josh

Love getting these notifications. Makes the late night work go so much faster. Thanks guys.

"Steve's got the ice cubes out" Oh this is gonna be a good one
