Episode #710: Lethal Weapon (W❤️M)

“Just imagine like, to distract someone, you send a police car careening through your own house!” - Eric

On this month’s patrons-only W❤️M we’re talking about one of the all-time greats, the Christmas action comedy, Lethal Weapon! Has there been a movie duo with faster chemistry than Riggs and Murtaugh? Why are we giving Rodge a birthday cake while he’s in the tub? Did anyone else mishear that one APB and think the movie was saying Gary Busey was dating the daughter? And wow, Anthony Kiedis’s dad! PLUS: Mr. Joshua does not tolerate workplace discrimination!

Lethal Weapon stars Danny Glover, Mel Gibson, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, Tom Atkins, Mary Ellen Trainer, Steve Kahan, Grand L. Bush, Ed O’Ross, Al Leong, Sven-Ole Thorsen, Traci Wolfe, Jackie Swanson, and Darlene Love as Trish Murtaugh; directed by Richard Donner.

Episode #710: Lethal Weapon (W❤️M)

Comments

Shame you didn't watch the extended version the scene with the hostage taker really adds to showing how little riggs cares about his own life while on the job.

Kureigu

The tai chi most common is the health stuff but it is a proper martial art if trained that way.

Kureigu

Whoa, really! What an incredible coincidence. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

It's just not Christmas until Tom Atkins gets shot through to thecegg nog

James C Harris

Andrew - KCOP is a channel in LA.

Brandon

The boys talking about the proper way to hover hand had me in tears. I have the best group photo with them from when they toured in Detroit. Andrew’s respectful hover hand is legendary lol

Meggy

Not only was this a fun episode, but it makes me what to hear WLM episodes for Smokey and the Bandit and Gross Pointe Blank.

Charles Keracher

I am late to this due to life stuff but KCOP is a real LA tv station, it was an independent station before becoming LA's UPN affiliate, and then MyTV, so it was all syndication in the 1980's along with Nightcrawler style local news

Aaron Rabiroff

What I love is that Danny Glover is the lead in Operation: Dumbo Drop so whenever I watch this movie and Murtaugh talks about his time in Vietnam I imagine Atkins jumping on a grenade to save Murtaugh...and an elephant.

The Wheel

the second one

The Wheel

In number 4 its stated that Trish writes erotic novels and is successful enough to fund this lifestyle.

Matthew Lloyd

Which Lethal Weapon is it where Danny Glover can’t get off the toilet or the house will blow up? Cinema peaked right there

Lindsey

Interesting. Good movie! I love 4 mainly cause of jet! There is going to be another one lol. Like really? How old can they be. I get Mel Gibsons character still doing it as that’s what he did but glover was already retiring in every other movie lol. The movie better be some nonsense that brings him out of retirement and not that he kept on doing it at 77

Holt Rowley

My Loaded Weapon 1 memory is a scene where they are investigating a crime scene and a CSI guy says "Watch your step, there's a lot of blood" and someone immediately goes ass-over-teakettle in the background. Incredibly dumb, but I can't watch a CSI-type scene without thinking of that.

Robert Walton

On the podcast JUNKFOOD CINEMA, Eric covered this with the hosts of that pod on 2018 -- the 30th anniversary of the film

Cody Downs

Love this one and the second film. Three is okay and the fourth is agreeable but a bit much.

Ed Harris

legit belly laughs over here. This is an all-timer of an episode. Thanks guys

Hard To Gwil

Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 and a bit of 3, all rule

Beatrix

John Armitage

Tig is not on the take. Trish is the primary bread winner with her romance novels

John Armitage

Think I’d love to see you guys do the series!

Andy T. Rebouças A

I came out of this episode wanting a bean dinner more than ever.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Die hard 2 is better.

Mark D Myers

Still remember this being a huge staple on TBS, along with Lethal Weapon 2.

Z

Piggy the Pig sounds like it’s time for a similar but legally distinct WHM t-shirt.

Jason

Jump back in because by law I have to share the Redman segment from cribs https://youtu.be/zNtKT9_1KXQ?si=1r61HKG5B_Vp1ImL

Aaron

Coors is cold brewed and would turn bad before it could be shipped out too far. That's why Bandit had to bust ass to deliver it in the movie or whatever.

Aaron

Burst out laughing at Piggy the Pig so much that one of the ladies at the gym looked at me with an uncomfortable smile. Probably thinks I'm going crazy while I'm doing facepulls. Thanks boys 😄

Steven Avalos

Hell yeah, I need an episode on Men At Work. And I wouldn’t say no to some Young Guns either.

HockeenightsCT

Scream 2 reference. It means a sequel that might be better than the original.

Only ever watched Letterman via random episodes on YouTube throughout the pandemic, guess I never hit those Christmas episodes! - ES

We Hate Movies

Great ep I loved it! I never clicked with the LW franchise as a kid, I don't know why. I loved Mel Gibson in Road Warrior and Danny Glover in Predator 2 at the same age. I think it's the quippy dialogue the whole movie

Smaug

For Eric: I'm rather astounded, him being a longtime Letterman viewer, he did not recall "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" by Darlene Love, when Andrew brought it up. She sang it every year on his show before he & his staff went on Christmas hiatus from 1986-2014. And, yes: during both at his runs NBC & CBS.

Cody Downs

Dumb question but can somebody explain "I got it by the way?" I think I missed the origin if it was on an episode and always thought it was a negative but then Andrew said it to give praise to Lethal Weapon 2

Chris Rose

Several years ago my mom confessed that she got my name from this movie, so now every year on my birthday I have to watch this movie just to do the Leo pointing meme.

Vicky I

This makes for a great start to the weekend! :) And the December line up fucking rules!!! Very excited about both SNDN & Love Actually

David Denoyer

Loaded weapon is a fantastic parody of LW/buddy cop films

Frank Grimes

🤘!!!

Matt Doenges

I first noticed this through the MAD Magazine parody, "Legal Wreckin'". This was on an HBO- ripped VHS tape on EP mode with ALIENS and RUNNING SCARED, and me and my dad watched that tape for years til it literally broke. Good times. Edit: KCOP Channel 13 is a legit LA station. Up through the 2000s it was an independent, showing kids cartoons, syndicated shows, and old movies.

MarkNM

The live wire that Mel is in this is a reminder of the alchemical effect of real star power, anti-semitism, racism and traffic stops notwithstanding.

Adam Lewis

Shaved-head 1985 Richard Harris would be a good Prof X. He’d have been in that right age range

RJ Cunningham

Kinda crazy that M&M’s-Santa “I do exist…” commercial is still going strong. Is that even what he says? I actually never understood it

RJ Cunningham

Steve and Andrew’s opining for a Coke Bears Christmas special reminds me of the Cadillac of X-Mas advertisement specials: Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration AKA The California Raisins Christmas. I unironically love it . I watch it every Christmas season despite being called “dumb” or “moronic” or “drunk” by my spouse and kids when I commandeer the TV to watch it.

Jason

i am too old for this shit...it was always funny they aged up Glover in the film

Frank Grimes

The greatest!🤘🤘
