The Nexus #87 - Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Added 2023-11-17 11:00:03 +0000 UTC
On this month's special edition of The Nexus, we're chatting about the totally great and completely underrated Star Trek III: The Search for Spock!
Is there any question that this is the best movie Leonard Nimoy ever directed? How great is Christopher Lloyd, also serving as the villain on this month's Animation Damnation btw, playing the dastardly Klingon, Kruge? How frequently is Dr. McCoy going back to that sleazy bar? Why couldn't we get more Uhura in this one? And how many times does Andrew reference having read the (totally awesome!) novel, "Sarek"?
The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Combat vet here; that “scepter” he’s carrying around is actually called a “swagger stick” in the military and you rarely see them actually carried by COs since WWII.

I'm glad you guys acknowledge Kirk's bisexuality.

In ALL the TJ Hooker references you guys were making, hoe did you forgot about Michael Rapaport's character in True Romance auditioning for a TJ-H reboot? And Clarence Worley asking him if he got to "meet Captain Kirk?"

I watched five minutes of that night court reboot and turned it off.

I'm gunna put Andrew's dates on my car. When people ask, "oh was that a friend of yours? I'm sorry for your loss," I'll say, "I knew next to nothing about him except that he mocked the scene of Giovanni Ribisi dying in Saving Private Ryan when he was a kid. I gave him $8/month and listened to him talk for thousands of hours." I think it'll spark some interesting conversation.

He was on vacation in Paris when we recorded this, so yeah, he's fine. - Andrew

I love that thanks to Chris, the WHM incarnation of the Enterprise is canonically awash with Deftones songs

Is this the happiest version of Eric that Felipe has ever drawn? Happiest version Steve too, I guess.

Brisco County Jr reboot would 100% be something I'd watch. Such an underrated show.

I am just weighing in on the scotty line about the wagon bc I like this saying. Here's one famous example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-RfHC91Ewc
Stephen King has used a variant of it a few times, something like (his words not mine): "and if my grandmother had a dick, she'd be my grandfather." I always have taken it (esp his variant) as being about the pointlessness of "if only" statements, like "if only I got out of that stock earlier, I wouldn't have gone bankrupt!!" I have no clue what Scotty means in this context.

I wanna know how many dozens of takes of “That Klingon Bastard killed my son!” there were.

I believe Lloyd's coat is meant to look like a jinbaori, which were these sleeveless overcoats worn by samurai. The overall shape design of post-TOS Klingon garb has a strong samurai vibe to it, presumably to lean into the "honorable warrior" bit they retooled them into.

Can I just say between Batman Begins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and now blessed with an unhinged Doc Brown in prosthetic forehead makeup this is an awesome lineup to listen to. Thank you guys for doing the Lord's work and making sure I have enough episodes on my phone to listen to while I drive during the holidays. RIP Steve, encased in a tube and shot out into the void, like he always wanted.

They did cast a sexy Amanda! They cast Mia Kirshner as Amanda Grayson in the new Treks (SNW and Discovery).

Also, Deforest Kelly is kingsized in this. His delivery after "My God Bones, what have I done?" Is possibly the best delivery in all of Trek

Chekov here being a real shame pig wearing that insane Dutch boy collared shirt. The only things that would make the ensemble complete are knickerbockers and buckled shoes.
