Episode #707 - Batman Begins (W❤️M)

“I, in my home, right now, have a bat from the movie Batman Begins” - Steve

On this week’s episode, W❤️M month continues as we chat about Chris Nolan’s fabulous comic book adaptation, Batman Begins! Has there been a softer Little Boy Bruce Wayne in cinema? Why couldn’t they have put a little more spirit gum on Liam Neeson’s goatee at the beginning? How fantastic is Cillian Murphy in this and shouldn’t Scarecrow have been a larger character? Does anyone have proof that Pennyworth was a real show and not just a tax shelter? And why can’t more studios look to these Nolan films to reassure themselves that it’s… okay to recast an actor? Hmm? PLUS: Batman blows his fortune on movie merch!

Batman Begins stars Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes, Liam Neeson, Tom Wilkinson, Ken Watanabe, Rutger Hauer, Linus Roache, Mark Boone Junior, Morgan Freeman, Richard Brake, and Sir Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth; directed by Christopher Nolan.

Episode #707 - Batman Begins (W❤️M)

Comments

So is the pronunciation of Ras in this movie right or is it the Raysh pronunciation from BTAS thats right? Growing up with the animated series it has always bothered me that they say Ras in this movie instead to Raysh .

Kureigu

“I’ve always been a Nolan girlie” lmfaooooo Eric ily

Nathalie Pena

Ras Al Guhl means “the demon’s head” in Arabic ❤️ The English word “ghoul” comes directly from an Arabic word.

Noura Sarayel

Woo, I can't wait to hear this one! Got to see Batman Begins in theaters with my dad when I was 17. Great times and my first introduction to Nolan! Also my first introduction to most of these characters like Falcone and of course Scarecrow.

Zora McBride

To give Steve's Joe Chill Malaquoteism a bit of credit. It sounds a bit like what Michael Jeter says in the Green Mile before he is executed. "I'm sorry for what I do, I'd give anything to take it back, but I can't."

Lono's Oboe

The best casting that Gotham show made was Alexander Siddig as Ras Al Ghul. Just put him in the new Batman please Matthew.

Tala Hobballah

The ABC family ad is one thing but the Nickleback Batman Begins TV Spot is a 2005 fever dream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYh7mrJxbXw

Matt

Is it just me or was Eric funnier than ever on this episode?? The fat lil bitch comment sent the guys and me laughing for a while 😂

Watch_N_Rewatch

This is such a good ep. I will forever have Alfred and Lucious having a frat house while Bruce is away as my personal canon for the movie 🤣

Kristian James Chayer

And also in Tenet. Caine doesn't even stand up from the table in that one.

Jen Fred

Great episode! This is one of my favorite Batman films of all time

Deitrich Tennin

Steve’s Spinner Rack.

Jason

Now that's more like it We Hate Movies.

Tristan

I’m surprised Nolan didn’t squeeze Michael Caine into Oppenheimer like he did in Dunkirk

Kevin Lynch

Loved this episode, about to do another listen.

Matthew Lloyd

I want a "Steve's Soapbox" where he explains comics to the gang, Gleep-Glossary style, Patreon tier more than anything

Matt

Absolutely hilarious from start to finish 🤣

Christopher Bruce

As for movies ending with a movie title card, I know Nolan would be too old but I remember to this day being a kid in theaters and the incredible title card at the end of Lion King giving me goosebumps. Culminates perfectly with Circle of Life ending with that beat and the image of the new young cub being held out in that iconic shot

RJ Cunningham

Cillian puts me to sleep all the time on the Calm app. Idris is on that app too.

Paul

Pattinson's Batman is a natural enemy for Dog Saw

Tim O'

Thank you, Andrew, for acknowledging Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow. I think he's fuckin iconic and underrated in this movie and sets the standard for the character (although you may be interested to know Robert Englund plays him decently in Injustice 2). I would love to see Matt Reeves' take on him.

Trev Herron

Podcasters are a cowardly, superstitious lot.

Adam Lewis

https://youtu.be/iSe6tvfedb0?si=T3bOLiyaCxX81wNI Holy moly, they weren’t kidding! When has The Dark Knight of Gotham ever “lived for love”?

jribs

Love this episode!! Y’all’s closing comments about it, I’m going to have to rewatch it and dark knight. I love them all but I’ve seen dark knight so many times and this one only a couple of times.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Same haha

Jaime Lee Ezell

I'm just surprised there was only two little pot shots at Marvel in this one.

Mark D Myers

I fell down a tunnel of sausages once too

Matt

I've always been a fan of the concept that Ra's Al Ghul is more of a title and that Ducard was only the latest in a long line over the ages. Thus making Ra's Al Ghul "immortal."

Justine Prudhomme

I have a theory that Nolan is a fan of the Toxic Avenger films. I can’t remember if it’s TA two or three, but the actor who played gambol is one of the main baddies in one of them, and in the same movie they use “we are tonight’s entertainment” Common enough line I know, but idk, just seemed like a coincidence and I just heard the gang talk about how Nolan would sometimes use 80s character actors so it KINDA adds up 🤷‍♂️

Wesley Hall

Here’s the fourth film, Batman vs Dog Saw

Brandon

It makes more sense that Thomas Wayne emotionally invalidates his son by taking him to see "Bats! The Musical," brags about himself and his family's empire, and that he thinks he's above the possibility of reproach as he chooses to exit the opera via the seedy alley when you know he's a surgeon, not a GP

Smaug

I think I said "that's insane" out loud at the same time as Eric in response to Cabin's bonkers statement that he didn't really buy into Nolan until Tenet and Oppenheimer.

jribs

Am I psychotic for wishing I could watch that Andrew Jupin booth cut print? Sounds like an infuriating warm hug of a watch.

MarkNM

Like Andrew I too have thought about the Ras Al Ghul advice when it’s cold!

Jason

What we need is a whole movie about what happened in The Narrows

James C Harris

"Batman Begins stars Christopher Nolan"!! I thought that was Inception

Felipe Sobreiro

Speaking of lunatics, do you think that guy from the mailbag a while back who identified as Batman listening to this right now? The opera was Gounod's Faust btw. I guess Bruce Wayne made a deal with a devil figure(Ra's al Ghul) to become Batman or Batman himself is the devil.

Eren Keskin

I love this movie, but I get absolutely bothered by the geography of Nolan's Gotham/Chicago. Also Nolan's aversion to blood really sticks out in this series of movies. I did always appreciate how Bruce's arrogance would always bite him in the ass and it would cost the city and people close to him dearly, because at the end of the day he's a rich sheltered college dropout who did some time in a Chinese prison and thought it was then a good idea to join a guy training literal assassins, SURVIVE it somehow, and then decide he's smart enough to do detective work.

Daniel Garcia

“I won’t kill you, but I don’t have to save you.” “That is technically killing me, you know.” “No it’s not bye”

Paul

The Best Superhero Movie EVER. (Yes better than its sequel)

Geoff Gershon

The only softer child Bruce Wayne was the kid who played him in Joker.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Y'all just made my day.

Zach

🤘!!!
