Episode #706 - Psycho (1960, W❤️M)

“This is one of those movies I wish I could’ve seen opening night in 1960” - Eric

On this week’s episode, We ❤️ Movies Month kicks off with a total banger as the guys discuss the prequel to Psycho II, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho! How great is this Bernard Herrmann score? Is Marion eating a cheese and mayonnaise sandwich? Would the film have been as good if Norman was cast more book-accurate (middle-aged drunk)? And would Hitch have enjoyed modern fast food like the baconator? PLUS: Norman Bates tangles with the Skeleton League and their new ally, Swamp Thing!

Psycho stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, John McIntire, Simon Oakland, Frank Albertson, Patricia Hitchcock, Vaughn Taylor, Lurene Tuttle, John Anderson, Mort Mills, and Martin Balsam as Det. Milton Arbogast; directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Episode #706 - Psycho (1960, W❤️M)

I saw this with my dad when I was 7 and I still remember the shock when Bates mom is revealed as a skellington. Was fun to relive with the WHM guys. Great episode.

I got to go to Universal when they had their big Hitchcock exhibit and took a picture with the Bates motel in the background! It got me hooked on Hitchcock at age 12! My favorite is Rebecca but overall I adore the show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It’s so, so good!!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

It could be like GWAR

Timothy Cameron Robbins Miller

I NEED Skeleton League merch!!!!!! 💀 🦴🖤

Katie Ripple

I used to just have Bates Motel on in the background and then season 2 happened and I've been a SIMP for the show since.

Tala Hobballah

I checked my copy out from the Jacksonville Public Library, and the ending has the psychiatrist explaining that Norman Bates was infected with the “woke mind virus.”

Frenzy is a super-underrated Hitchcock film. It's in the sundowning years of his filmography so I think it's kinda overlooked, but I recommend it to people every chance I get. I rewatched all Psycho films when we did the episode (I bought the Arrow 4K set) and yeah, 2 is really great, 3 is fine (and an especially strong directorial debut from Perkins), but yeah 4 is... not great. I almost would've just preferred they made a straight prequel and not had the Perkins/CCH Pounder radio show framing device. Especially since it comes to absolutely nothing for the end of the movie. Oddly, I had a false memory (I hadn't seen it since maybe '96/'97?) of Norman finding CCH Pounder at the radio station and killing her off. Better movie? - Andrew

Incredible information. Such an odd hill to die on indeed! - Andrew

Have you ever checked out the doc "78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene"? It's not a-MAZING, but still pretty fascinating. Would recommend! - Andrew

Cody! No, I haven't yet. Just added it to my Letterboxd watchlist. Thanks for the rec! - Andrew

Watched All the Psycho sequels for the first time a few years ago. Surprised by how good two and three was. Four is meh. I remember seeing that Psycho remake when it came out, was working at a theater at the time and we had a lot of walkouts. I saw Hitchcocks Frenzy (72) last month.which was great and recommend.

I'm way overdue for a rewatch! I was cackling at the joke about Marion listening to the soundtrack on the radio as she's driving around.

Convincing John

oh my God I love who framed Roger rabbit I can't wait

The Wheel

I can not recall if it was Jack Warner or Louis Mayer but one of the two died on the hill of No Toilets In The Movies, professionally speaking. Like it was part of why they got pushed out of a senior management position. You Must Remember This covered it a few seasons ago. He'd give people lectures about how toilets do not belong in movies. Too smutty.

The Wheel

Just hit the part where Eric brings up how Joseph Stefano also developed Swamp Thing for tv (the live action 90s series); he was the showrunner for eps 1-13 -- also they use a replica of the Bates motel from Psycho 4 in an episode of Swamp Thing.

Convincing John

A boy's best friend is his podcast

Eren Keskin

That shower scene is still probably the greatest scene in film history.

Beatrix

Steve's lol at Chris saying he had to look at the movie title to see what Search for Spock is about got a good lol out of me

Smaug

For, Andrew: As you just caught Perkins w/Jeff Bridges recently in WINTER KILLS, ever see REMEMBER MY NAME from 1978 from Alan Rudolph? An underseen noir w/Perkins being stalked by Geraldine Chaplin. Guys, keep up the super-stellar work on WHM!!! 😎

Cody Downs

Can confirm re: sandwiches: the absolute worst sandwich I ever ate was a mayo and cheese sandwich I got visiting Britain as a kid, which had the bonus nightmare of the cheese being, of all things, SHREDDED cheese. The car ride back to the hotel was the most excruciating hour of my life.

John Edwards

What is this world coming to? A toilet in a film is simply a step too far! Now excuse me while I go watch “Society” again…

Brent Cowan

Just caught him recently with Jeff Bridges in the totally bonkers Winter Kills from 1979. Great movie! - Andrew

Kiiiiiinda one of the best parts of that movie, which I re-watched last night for the first time since like '96. - Andrew

Hey Eric! You see that Tom of Finland movie with your Ma?

Catboyslim

Let's be honest with ourselves, Sam Loomis is 5 inches AT BEST. 6, if I was feeling generous.

Justine Prudhomme

Anthony Perkins is on the All Time Underrated list.

MarkNM

Not to mention Olivia Hussey as Norma Bates in Psycho 4 👀

Maurice Jones

I honestly drink milk all the time.

Elliott Tipton

Spooktacular extended! Let's goooo

Frank Grimes

Genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time, I've seen it at least a couple dozen times since I was a kid - and the added bonus to that is that this episode is top notch, really hilarious and you guys don't skimp on interesting details and history with the movie.
