Episode #705 - The Hunger Games

“The whole visual experience is mind-numbing!” - Chris

On this month’s patrons-only We Hate Movies episode, the guys are chatting about the total misfire of a YA adaptation, The Hunger Games! Couldn’t they have tossed in just a little more violence? Why are we doing faux-doc shaky cam? Couldn’t we have some continuity with this production design? And how can a story about hunting humans for sport be this boring? PLUS: George Costanza eats stale bread off the District 12 ground!

The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Stanely Tucci, Wes Bentley, Willow Shields, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Toby Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Amandla Stenberg, Jack Quaid, and Donal Sutherland as President Snow; directed by Gary Ross.

Episode #705 - The Hunger Games

Comments

Am I the only hearing Cartman from South Park when the do the old lady selling the pin? Lol

Papa Taylor

Reap me Katnis REAP ME!! 🤣🤣🤣

Darren

The dogs weren't even done right in the book they have the faces and voices of the dead tributes and taunt them with screams and pleas.

Kureigu

I will only accept "F*ck You, Effie Trinket" as the true title of this film.

Sass

I think this movie suffered from a tiny budget. In Catching Fire you can definitely tell. The CGI monkeys look amazing compared to these crappy “dogs.”

Lindsey

Andrew and I share the exact same position on Lawrence. It's been an issue (and still is) with Hollywood always casting younger actresses to play older. And 30 year old women are offered the geriatric roles.

Tala Hobballah

good movie, good ep... man this episode made a lot of mutt-ation comments spawn on patreon and reddit(but comments have points). I think they just did one too many gambling jokes, but it's improve directed at a wide audience. still better than other movie podcasts. I want more WHM hunger games and maze runner!

Tristan

I have literally never watched any of these dog shit movies. They said it in the intro and it how I’ve always felt about these that they just looked like the kids version of Battle Royal.

Matt G.

Starving games did it better, hangover games even better.... 😆

Juan Pedraza

Oceans 8 a all female reboot ,but sense it wasn't a nerd thing the Internet didn't shit it's pants over it.

Mark D Myers

Hunger games=bad.

Mark D Myers

YA nonsense. I can't vouch for the books but you can really see where they pulled the punches anyways.

heathen snow

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Paul Heidtman

That character was more from the "I have so much money I want to make myself look like a cat" program.

Vicky I

These movies have the same problem that the Harry Potter movies do. They end up being just visual bullet points with only the book readers understanding the connective tissue. It ends up feeling like someone telling you what happens in a book they read. Lots of 'and then this happened' with little impact.

Alexander Farr

To be clear, I'm not trying to imply anything but, to be honest, a lot of the sex jokes here made me really uncomfortable considering a good chunk of them were in reference to characters who were supposed to be children and/or actually played by children. Not trying to ruin peoples' fun, I just found it more than a little tasteless. 🤷‍♀️

Justine Prudhomme

Saw this in a full theater and a couple with a fussy baby was next to me. They kept passing the baby back and forth and each time the baby got swung into me. Only saw the first one until recently. The last two are really awful. Isn't there a cat/human.that helps in one of the last two movies? Is that part of the dead kid/dog hybrid program?

Darryl Bowen

Some real “Mom get in here” energy in that thread, yikes

Brent Cowan

Thereapists for one hundred please

Tru$tn01

I want a prequel movie of the Pin Woman, A Ballad of Groceries and Pins

Vicky I

Yeah I feel like the biggest critiques they gave could be answered with "that's the point" or "no they showed that but you weren't paying attention", e.g. when Steve was like "maybe Peeta could be like 'wow I've never had chicken before' to show they're impoverished" when Katniss was creaming herself over a bread roll in the opening scene. Or yeah the middle class thing when it's clear that this country has become so hyper-capitalist that the disparity between rich and poor has grown to the point that 'middle class' doesn't exist, there's no way for anyone to escape their circumstances except for winning this nightmare game and selling their soul. It's not a great movie but the things they focus on here were kind of odd.

Rhea

I really like these movies and loved the books as a teenager so this one's gonna hurt a little. I'll manage.

Rhea

I'm pretty sure that I've laughed out loud every single time you guys have said "my daughter" as "my dorter"

Tim O'

oh yeah Catching Fire rules its so much better than the first movie imo

Kayla

Gonna be honest the thing about the food on the train felt a little nitpicky. Terrible movie though, no question.

The Wheel

I regret to inform you: the books are also not good.

Sam Harrison

This episode is hilarious but the people complaining about it on reddit are even more hilarious. Keep up the good work, fellas.

Isaac Coleman

Hunger will make people do amazing things. I mean, the proof of that is cannibalism.

Eren Keskin

At 1:13 Eric has the advertising gimmick a bit backward. The hospital badge is for when you’re dying on the way to the hospital. You can remember that you live in a world with the NY Mets and decide, yeah screw it, maybe I will follow my Grandfather and that white horse over the horizon.

Jason

Nah I just prefer comedy rather than a long list of nitpicky complaints

YaBoyStevieJay

I saw this a few weeks ago at a theatre re-release for the first time since its original release. I thought it was decent, I enjoyed it and I've never read the books. I agree it is boring and I also hated that stupid Bourne shaky cam from the 2000s and 2010s. Why were we doing that? I think some good points are made about the production of the movie here. There are also a lot of really petty, whiny points being made in this episode that flat-out don't make sense. Steve lamenting the absence of a middle class between the destitute and the ultra-rich doesn't make sense at all as a critique of the narrative. The language of extreme wealth disparity and how it's leveraged to abuse the poor is one of the major themes of the work. What're you even talking about, Steve? Chris was really on a bitch roll this ep too. Love the show, but this kinda firms up in my mind that franchise movies are often not good eps of the show. I personally don't find it fun to listen to eps where the guys are just playing script doctor the whole time rather than making jokes and I think that happens a lot with these kinds of movies. The exception being the Pirates franchise, but those were so funny because they were watched all at once as an endurance trial Also, you want to see Josh Hutcherson shine along with some truly excellent performances from Derek Wilson, Eliza Coupe, and Keith David, watch Future Man

Smaug

A Steve Brule cameo where it's John C. Riley in the rain sinisterly pointing a gun at someone and quipping, "For your health," would give this one at least another half star for me.

John Edwards

Wouldn’t it had been fun if Katnis picked up sailors for sex while having a mental break down like in the Bell Jar? Totally different vibe lol. This movie rubbed me the wrong way because we as a nation couldn’t have a Battle Royale movie without some moron shooting up a school. I liked the books although I listened to them on a kindle with a Robocop cadence,

Catboyslim

Really tough listening experience with Cabin as usual being an enormous bummer. Feel like the show has gotten a lot less comedy and a lot more complaining.

YaBoyStevieJay

I like that the guy isn’t called Peter but Peeta, the Lois Griffin way

Felipe Sobreiro

I still remember the casting at the time as someone who loved (the first 2) books. The author as well as details in the books would tell you Katnis and Gale are nonwhite. Then the casting call came out and stated "Caucasian only". Still a bummer.

Tala Hobballah

I *KNOW* I've seen this. I have NO idea what happens in it.

Matt

"I watched this twice and both times I thoughtit was in outer space" - Eric I laughed way too hard at this. I literally spit my donut out to laugh

James C Harris

Nobody making a Pita Bread joke?

TDB

that said Cabin is right in that committing to the bit in terms of going Winters Bone (or even a full on reality show or docco style) would improve things a lot

Winson Paine

Am I the only one who gets stoked when the crew roasts a movie they really liked? This is delightful. I really liked the books and this movie at least, but my take on the books was less Battle Royale For Babbies (which is not an unfair take) and more Battle Royale as written by Sylvia Plath. The first book really reminded me of The Bell Jar in a lot of ways which don't belong in an internet movie podcast comments section, so the starkness of the movie did it for me. It is always good when we get to the IT IS OK TO LIKE A MOVIE section and I get to be like ERIC IS TALKING TO ME RIGHT NOW tho

Winson Paine

Mannnnn. Don't get me started...

MarkNM

Still haven't, still happy. Luckily, since HG was ubiquitous for a time, I could still follow and enjoy. Yknow, like Casablanca or Wizard of Oz!

MarkNM

classic movie

Frank Grimes

It’s called Battle Royale, a Japanese movie, from 2000. This is a travesty, although I like Jennifer Lawrence.

Catboyslim

I realized I was getting old when thought they broke the 10 year rule

Ben Harju

I enjoy all the films (even though splitting Mockingjay was annoying) but I'm looking forward to listening to this, as I know they're pretty dumb movies!

Tony King

Haven’t listened to the episode yet, but I enjoyed the first 2 hunger games movies, so this’ll be interesting

Tejas Bommakanti

What a pleasant surprise

Frank Grimes

Didn't even remember that you guys were going to talk about this but I am currently watching all the Hunger Games movies (on Catching Fire right now). Well I know what I am going to listen to while I do housework today.

Queen Taru

Honestly guys, I kinda really liked Catching Fire…
