Animation Damnation - Beast Wars "Double Dinobot"
Added 2023-06-15 10:00:05 +0000 UTC
On this month's Animation Damnation, the guys are chatting about the abysmally animated Transformers spin-off, Beast Wars!
The episode covered, "Double Dinobot," which originally aired back on November 5, 1996, raises certain questions like: Why do the Maximals appear to live in that barren, poorly animated landscape? Were we supposed to throw up every time Rattrap was on screen? And should we have allowed these companies to make cartoons with sub-Nintendo 64 animation that felt dated before the show even aired?
Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going!
Original cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.
Watching this episode on a YouTube channel that's upscaled it to 4K..forgot how barren the setting of this show was.

I hope the rights issues can get untangled so we can get a home release of robots in disguise 2001.

Code of hero is the best episode of any transformers series.

This episode inspired me to read the Wikipedia article on this show(never go to the actual Transformers wiki it is a terrifying nightmare), and, my dudes, you NEED to look into doing more of this show. It gets fucking nuts on a level that is hard to imagine from a kids show. I don't want to spoil anything but I am 100% sure you guys would enjoy talking about it even if it wasn't for the show.

This was the only Transformers I ever watched, and as a dumb 11 year-old, I fucking loved it. But the first season is terrible. Later eps had some interesting moral questions (my Animorphs-reading, my-heroes-commit-warcrimes-and-it's-complex ass was fascinated), and god, but I loved Cheetor. Yeah, the dumbass cat. I also was convinced that Rattrap and Dinobot were going to end up in love, because my young lesbian heart was desperate to see gayness.
Would I watch any of it now? Aw FUCK no. Nope. Love the characters, fond memories, never touching it again.

Loved Beast Wars as a kid. It gets wild and so much character death.

Oh Also Megatron and Dinobot ate heavily implied to have been a couple. Megs is obsessed with him over the course of the series

No, it's a totally valid criticism. I've just come to the opinion that Animation Damnation is just such a misguided endeavor. The curated style doesn't work because if they've never seen the show in question, they're just jumping in blind with no context of what's happening, and spend the episode saying "why did that happen?", "that doesn't make sense", or "that's stupid" about things that were explained if they HAD watched the first episode or, at the very least, LOOKED AT THE WIKI. As for the complaints about the CGI animation, maybe it doesn't hold up, but dismissing the show outright because it offends your sensibilities comes across as snobbish. People have an attachment to it for a reason and it's not just because of nostalgia. You are exactly right, there is NO affection for the medium be found here and I'll be honest, I don't want them to come anywhere near any CURRENT animated shows with a ten-inch pole. Sorry for the rant.

The big irony of We Hate Movies is they all...LIKE movies, even the bad ones are fun and they have a passion for the medium? These cartoon ones always sound like no ones even really enjoying themselves and there's not enough to talk about for a 20 minute cartoon. There's no expertise or knowledge to draw on because none of them really give a shit, unlike star trek or star wars content. Sorry about the bummer post, I just usually skip these and always feel bummed out when I do listen

Am I insane? I always thought the design of Season 1 Rattrap was cute. Especially when you compare him to Beast Machines Rattrap, who actually WAS disgusting.

Loved Beast Wars when I was a kid! If you want full context on why things are the way they are in the show I can give it to you but I think it’s a lot funnier that you don’t know.

This was called BEASTIES in Canada. LOVED that title when I was a kid, WAY better than Beast Wars. Every nerd boy in my class had the toys including myself. And the spiders one scared the shit out of me as kid 😂
