MELR0210 #61 - 90210's "Mexican Standoff" & Melrose Place's "Strange Bedfellows"

On this month's flashback to sunny 1990's California, the gang chats about two out-RAGEOUS episodes of Fox Primetime soaps!

First up on Beverly Hills, 90210, it's the non-streaming episode, "Mexican Standoff"! Originally airing April 30, 1992, this episode features Brenda and Dylan sneaking down to Mexico for a romantic weekend, all while Kelly, who is having trouble accepting the fact that Jackie and Mel's wedding is coming up, meets a certain sexy riverboat strangler who appears in the backyard to do some housework for Jackie!

Then over on Melrose Place, things are heating up in "Strange Bedfellows," which first got in front of our eyes on December 15, 1993. On this ep, Alison gets a free Jeep from billionaire Steve as he continues to try and sweep her off her feet/buy her affection, Billy begrudgingly tries video dating for a cover story at the magazine, Matt is nowhere to be found, Michael starts trying to get control over Jane again, and Jake wears a wire to try and take down Palmer once and for all!

MELR0210 is a WHM podcast where the guys blissfully stroll through the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place timelines. The TV episodes covered will run in broadcast order, but they may skip duller 'sodes in order to keep the focus on the nitty, the gritty, and the downright bizarre. Thanks so much for continuing to support the WHM Patreon!

The earring thing was real, but different. The ear you had it in indicated whether you were looking for a top or a bottom. I had a gay friend with a pierced ear and I mentioned the whole "earring means you're cruising" thing to him and he Well, Actually'd me so hard my head spun. Also, weddings in Los Angeles are a fucking racket. They charge you ridiculous amounts of money for god damn anything.

Narrative horror podcasts are all the rage right now. A Riverboat Strangler miniseries would be a smash hit and almost certainly get picked up for a Paramount+ adaptation

Yeah, but wasn't he initially kind of hobbling around a few episodes back, or no? Now I can't remember! - Andrew

The whole thing is that Michael broke his back, insinuating paralysis. In real life, that doesn't necessarily mean he's completely paralyzed. But it's movie/tv speak for paralysis.

I know she has her own life and stuff, but if someone's gotta be absent from Melro down the road, I think we can all agree that it's nice to have Chelsea in a guest spot. 🙂

Crabby, you did a great job hosting this one when The Jame Master was sick.😊

I can say that growing up in Provincetown MA since the late 70s, the LGBT+ bandana code was real but nowhere near as elaborate as people think

Wow dude, that's fucking wild. Sorry you had to deal with that! And yeah, wild that my folks knew what's up! - Andrew

90210 isn't the only show on Paramount+ and Pluto to have missing episodes, and I think the best theory for that is also the simplest: the powers that be didn't want to pay all the acting residuals for a show that's been long off the air, so they just omitted some episodes here and there to be cheap in that department.

I don’t know if it’s cause I’m black but when I was a teen wearing a red bandana in Mississauga Ontario. On two occasions the Crips literally chased after me thinking I was a Bloods gang member. So even in Upstate Ny, I think your parents were in the know 😂 Ps. And I had to watch the 90210 ep on DailyMotion. Great episode 👍🏾
