The Nexus #79 - "In the Pale Moonlight" / "Tsunkatse"
Added 2023-03-31 10:01:00 +0000 UTC
It's the annual patron-curated edition of our Star Trek re-cap show!
First up on DS9, it's the fan-favorite episode "In the Pale Moonlight"! This total-banger episode originally aired back on April 15, 1998, and finds the DS9 gang knee-deep in the Dominion War, where Captain Sisko goes against everything he believes to make some moves to win the war for the Federation. His idea? Get the Romulans involved in the war through lies and misdirection—like a magician! Was Picard waterboarding gleep glops during the Dominion War? Where was Riker in all of this? How fabulous is Andrew Robinson on this show? And should they really have had Sisko doing a Ferris Bueller through the whole thing?
Then, across the galaxy on Voyager, it's the wild episode "Tsunkatse"! Originally hitting UPN on February 9, 2000, this episode was used as a way to cross-promote WWE's Smackdown program, which also aired on the UPN network. So that's why we've got wrassling superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson guesting as a gleep-glop gladiator with forehead ridges of some kind. We've also got Seven of Nine being forced to fight him in these PPV fight nights, Janeway getting her vacation interrupted, legendary character actor Jeffrey Combs portraying a Space Vince McMahon-type guy, and one of the most high stakes plots in Trek history... Neelix getting a sunburn?
The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support this weird thing we do—we couldn't do it without you!

It’s like you guys consistently get the grading of these eps backwards 😂 still entertaining!

I quite liked the siskos log entry format. Keeps the story from siskos perspective, his thoughts on the evens as they unfolded.

Trekkies would make such a great episode or commentary. Yes, at times it's sad, but at others is uplifting seeing these people pursue their passions and find their community. Plus it has so many outlandish moments and personalities. Likening it to American Movie is fair. It's a mixed bag, but super fun and super quotable.

If you guys like Jeffrey Coms, DS9 is his fucking show. He is all over DS9 as a ferengi who's a total dick, a vorta who's a total dick, and then a weird one off creep who pervs on kira but that's a one off. You guys need to watch DS9 the whole thing about the show is how it evolves as the writers room slowly gets more power.

Have you guys been to Buffalo Wild Wings during a UFC ppv? Incoherent screaming at the fights on the TV is exactly what people do.

I kinda hope whenever TNG and TOS is finished you guys do voyager. Voyager is my comfort ST...my background noise. It's one of the ones I was able to catch in real time. Wasn't able to with TNG and DS9 because they were syndicated and I never really knew the times or channels

Delta Flyers podcast, Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill review each episode of Voyager together is a pretty good time. There is a lot of warts and all to their reflections of time on set, behind the scenes and how the sausage was made. Robert Beltran appears on it a few times with things to say.

Eric never tried laser tag nor was ever taken to a theme park. No wonder he is so bitter and angry.

Want to watch The Net series, as I kinda do? You gotta take your ass to Crackle.

My bad on that one, apologies. It kind of does matter, because "white comedians punching down" is both a very specific and unfortunately common sort of podcast. WHM has not only fairly consistently acknowledged and course corrected for lines crossed but actually made efforts to help out, which is unfortuately rare.

Steven is not white, not that it should matter.

I hope Eric watches DS9 if he can find the time. That juice is worth the squeeze.

So like... five years ago I reckon y'all might have been too mean to do Trekkies as an ep (or even a commentary, which might be better). Current WHM avoids punching down when possible for the most part which is why I suspect most of your Patreon people pay you. Finding four white dudes who can be dicks about something is pretty fuckin easy, all y'all are special because you (generally) handle such things with grace.
Also if you don't want to do Trekkies, Shatner's THE CAPTAINS is amazing and gets my vote in as much as I get one.

NERD NOTES
- Seven's outfit was designed by the Doctor who always wanted to bang her from day one, they put a hat on it.
- The Doctor is sort of a reverse Data, he becomes more and more of a person as the seasons go on and the thing on his arm is some future tech shit they stole from the future so he can have adventures. He gets a very late in run ep where he gets his Measure of a Man ep where it is decided he gets to be a person
- I fucking love DS9 but can't imagine wandering in on Pale Moonlight without years of watching the Vorta and their toenail bodyguards and all the other shit
- If you want a treat go look up Robert Beltran's comments on being Chakotay and how much he hated Voyager and Trek and everything. If you want another treat do not read his recent twitter feed.

I hope Andrew wasn’t disappointed once he finally realized this DS9 episode wasn’t Far Beyond the Stars
