EDITOR’S NOTE: We recorded this commentary the night before we all got word Lance Reddick had passed. Lance was an amazing actor who we’ve loved for years, in everything from the John Wick franchise to The Wire, Fringe, Oz, Lost, The Guest, and beyond. We never had the chance to meet him, but from all counts he was a fantastic guy. His presence heightened and increased the artistry of whatever he was in. We will miss him. - Andrew

On the first commentary of 2023, the guys are chatting over the bad-ass hit man revenge classic, John Wick! How fantastic is Keanu in this role? Did anyone else forget that Dafoe is in this? Did they have to use all that Marilyn Manson music? Should the four of us bury podcasting equipment under a concrete floor just in case? And someone really should’ve told Michael Nyqvist’s Viggo that he looked real bad in that hat…

John Wick stars Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Willem Dafoe, Dean Winters, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynihan, John Leguizamo, Ian McShane, David Patrick Kelly, Clarke Peters, Kevin Nash, and the late, great Lance Reddick as Charon; directed by Chad Stahelski & David Leitch.

If you find yourself needing to re-start your commentary sync experience, remember that we start the film at the 00:00:05 mark and the commentary part of the audio tracks begins at 00:07:02.

Comments

Decided to watch this with commentary before chaper 2.

Kureigu

lol just seeing this now! No, they weren't Moonies. Good question though, gotta keep your eyes peeled for those folks!

We Hate Movies

I pray Keanu has no skeletons in his closet. He, Mr. Rogers, and Bob Ross represent all that is good in celebrity culture.

Edward Carlson

I know he doesn't die in Antichrist, but man is he brutalized.

Chad Kroning

This is not Willem Dafoe's most brutal onscreen death, I believe that prize belongs to The Lighthouse.

Felix Forrester

WHERE are the pics of Chris' new dog?!? The people demand it!

Rose Esposito

one thing I gotta add at this final confrontation: this is so well lit, I can see all the details. it's such a beautiful change of pace from typical blockbuster shit these days where i can't see goddamn anything (because then I would see how bad the CGI is)

Matt Nelson

humming the Dafoe theme during the last Dafoe scene is so good

Matt Nelson

‘Fred AIDS’ by the way 🤣

Regan Wood

Yeah there’s TOO MANY Jump cuts because Matty D is an actor, not a martial artist, where Keanu is an actor that became a damn good martial artist.

Catboyslim

Ah cool. I’ve been on it for a while now - got the tshirt and all…

Justin Shaw

Film twitter, letterboxd, just people we know too.

We Hate Movies

Guyz you mentioned Miami Vice getting more respect in recent years.. anywhere in particular you’ve picked up that vibe?

Justin Shaw

Dam this movie fucks

Jonathan

Also the Turok gun is a keltech ksg bullpup shotgun. It would make a good dinosaur hunting gun.

Jonathan

He's Willem Dafriend in this movie instead of Willem Dafoe, so it's easy to forget that it's him

Tim O'Connor

Andrew you said your old church was bought by Koreans. Was it the Moonies?

Jonathan

Brian did Keanu a solid when he got this gig. I had not seen this yet, and I enjoyed it a lot!

Leesha Olivier

I can follow the action in all of the Wick films which is why it is my favorite action series. For all that is good about Bourne series the action does not hold up.

Gabryel Steinmetz

I always forget Willem Defoe is in this

Michael Daniels

*Best Picture winner Platoon

Gabryel Steinmetz

Loving you guys' recent obsession with "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades," great song!

Jack

Oh...and I guess Dafoe can be in this somehow

Clever Girl

You all made a joke about Wick's house being a Nancy Meyer house the first 30 minutes of this commentary and I could not stop casting that film in my head. If we had Meyer direct an un-ironic ex-assassin film, I would like Melissa Leo as the lead (because she can be cute with the grandkids but I believe she could defend herself like in Equalizer). The ex husband who is also an assassin could be Holt McCallany. Because he's a sociopath, he won't care she's the mother of his child, he just wants the money she took to start a new life with their daughter Mamie Gummer (who wouldn't be an assassin but i think she could surprise you). When he comes back to exact revenge, Leo sends "the kids" (Gummer and some tiny grands) to stay with her brother in Connecticut who is the "hard boiled" guy in the armory in Wrath of Man, Gerald Tyler. He vows to protect her family because he's the reason she became an assassin and he introduced her to McCallany in the 80s. Instead of lens flares ... Billowy curtains. Instead of long leather trench coats, Leo is in dusters. And the film ends with that beautiful coastal home and all those soothing earth tones covered in blood and hitman corpses. If the studio MUST have bigger names...Jody Foster and Graham McTavish. But...i may be wrong.

Clever Girl

This was a great 'Mentary because I don't mind watching this movie again.

Is there a link that could be used to download the commentary track? The more things I have to stream at once, the greater the chance that something decides to start buffering and throws the sync off.

RE: Willem Dafoe brutal on-screen deaths, how about Platoon?

Felipe Sobreiro

A solemn and sincere rest in power for Lance Reddick.

Jaye McInnes (atJayewas)

I feel like Felipe’s drawing this time was based on all the guys pandemic looks, sans Chris.
