The Nexus #78 - "The Empath" / "Hollow Pursuits"

It's another exciting jaunt through the Star Trek universe on The Nexus

Up first on TOS, it's the super-cheap, but interesting episode, "The Empath," which first aired back on December 6, 1968. This episode, close to the end of the series' run, is shot almost entirely in a black box soundstage and features a cool rainbow forcefield, an eerie sacrificial alter from a giallo film, Spock with a stuffed up nose, McCoy and Kirk getting Hellraiser'd, and the rest of the Enterprise crew literally just waiting up in space for the episode to finish!

Then over on TNG, it's "Hollow Pursuits," a super-gross, totally wild episode that premiered on May 1, 1990. Featuring the debut of the bumbling Lieutenant Reg Barclay, whose twisted holodeck addiction starts messing with his performance on duty, while Troi, Riker, and Geordi get both pissed off and creeped out by him in equal measure! Oh, and the Enterprise is disintegrating or something, but no one really seems to care because Reg is recreating his co-workers as his holographic playthings. PLUS: Picard hilariously getting super-annoyed with Data and Wesley being completely unprofessional during an Engineering meeting!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support this weird thing we do—we couldn't do it without you!

As somebody who watched a ton of The A-Team, it was a pleasant surprise to see H.M. Murdock on TNG

Dal Lynn

Jersey girl for the h feed!

Mark D Myers

y'all nasty for this one, and i say that with great affection

Emily B

Poor Mop Bot.

TDB

can’t wait for Bones to get into Neutral Milk Hotel

TJ Guiney

Riker broke it down like a shotgun. Reg's previous assignment lied out their ass to foist him off onto The Enterprise. This episode should have had a scene where Troi passes Barclay in the hall, pauses, then spend the rest of the episode vomiting uncontrollably at the wrongness she felt in a mind she couldn't identify.

I'll take 100 jackin it jokes over 1 instance of Eric's soundboard

Smaug

I can see j/o to ‘oops I did it again’ or ‘you drive me crazy’ (big MJH fan), but ‘toxic’? Of course I personally think it’s weird to rub one out to any media that doesn’t have at least a full nipple.

Josh Perrigo

deep space nine they gotta do emall they are trapped isay trapped in hell *ghoulish laughter*

Paul

I'm kinda hoping yet dreading an "Animated Series" run.

Edward Carlson

Have you guys already decided what you are going to do when you run out of TOS episodes?

Paul Heidtman

Love all the Radiohead talk. “I’m a creep, Jim Boy, I’m a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here, Jim Boy.”

Paul

Dr McCoy carries those organ regrowing pills in case he ever has to run again

Joe Parrino

The budget was so low on the TOS episode that they couldn't even afford to have Steve on this month.

Tim O'Connor

I would not have pegged Steve as the moral anchor who kept the show from becoming truly perverted. Proof that people will surprise you.

Robyn Bennis

It's not like he is aggressively hitting on anyone real. He just has social anxiety.

Gabryel Steinmetz

Barclay is one of my favorite characters. All of the characters on TNG are so perfect so it was nice to see someone realistic.

Gabryel Steinmetz

Barclay was truly the creepiest starfleet member (at least until Brad Dourif showed up in Voyager)
