WLM - The Big Lebowski

On this month’s We ❤️ Movies, the guys are chatting about one of the all-time great films of the 1990s, The Big Lebowski!

Lebowski is one of those movies where a new detail, joke, or moment is discovered with every re-watch. Has John Goodman ever been better? Can massive cult fandom destroy a movie's reputation? Where does this rank in the Coens' oeuvre? And wow, does this movie sure make you miss Philip Seymour Hoffman! PLUS: "And a good day to you, sir!" - Best greeting of all time?

The Big Lebowski stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, Philip Moon, Mark Pellegrino, Peter Stormare, Flea, Torsten Voges, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Jack Kehler, James G. Hoosier, and John Turturro as Jesus Quintana; directed by The Coen Brothers.

Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are! Your support keeps the lights on around the old clubhouse. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you choose to spend some time with us!

About to give this a listen as my baby and I go on a date to see sinners and The Surfer. Yesterday we did a double feature of Fargo/Lebowski and today is the podcast catchup times. Love you guys. stay safe out there everybody. Get set to wear the blue!

I have both Kahlua and Disarrono on my alcohol shelf...

I think the spike in popularity of Kahlua and Disaronno was largely due to the end of the voluntary restrictions of televised hard liquor advertisements in 1996. These brands were the safer choices for hard liquor companies to begin advertising due to their relatively low ABV.

Great episode! The screenplay is easy to find online and is totally worth reading.

Shawn Goff

I'm so happy you guys did this one, one of my favorite films! I can't wait to hear it! is anyone else having trouble downloading the mp3

Zora McBride

Your Jeff Bridges voice sometimes sounds like Captain Beef Heart 🤣

Maurice Jones

Really need y'all to do an ep on Greedy!

FiddlersGreenDay

Speaking of Cohen comedies, I recently got to be a stand-in for a secret somebody on Joel’s lesbian road trip comedy 🤫 It’s funny that one brother is off making Shakespeare while the other is doing the wacky stuff.

Rob Brown

Inside Llewyn Davis is my favorite Coen brothers film. Definitely not a comfort movie though.

Gabryel Steinmetz

I wonder if the Coens were inspired by Cutter's Way when developing this movie? Like Lebowski, that film also has Jeff Bridges getting embroiled in a possible conspiracy and teaming up with an unhinged Vietnam war vet to get to the truth (awesome movie, btw)

I usually like to watch or rewatch movies before listening to an episode, lucky for me I just watched this a couple days ago after my dad showed up with a White Russian that the neighbor had made him. Wasn't bad 🤔

Andrea Spears

Just started watching fantastic mr fox, he’s listening to the Davy Crockett song at the very beginning, where they pronounce “bear” as “bar” - “Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three” so I’d say that Sam Elliot’s pronunciation was correctly done

The tradition of the mudslide/alcoholic-desert-drink continues to this day for sure. My favorite version of this is the Yoohoo Yeehaw you can get at Double Wide in Dallas TX. Basically a Yoohoo slushie with vodka and possibly something else. Definitely worth the $8.

Never thought about before but totally glad y’all mentioned this being an awesome LA environs film. The east Hollywood bungalows, gaudy Malibu, old money Pasadena. And can confirm that these bowling alley cast of characters do exist out here. I used to go to a bowling alley in Southeast LA that was open 24hrs and at 2am you see some Smokey and Jesus dudes out there lol. Great episode y’all. Only complaint in this rewatch is Turtorro playing a Mexican/Latino stereotype and his terrible pronunciation of pendejo. They could have a cast an actual Latino actor and it wouldn’t have been as cringe to see this. Mike Gomez was right there as the cop. But you know it was 98 and Mexicanos were still being cast as cholos or cops or the help.

This isn’t the same necessarily but I’ve been in Ubers where the driver will ask two questions: 1. Do you want to smoke some tall glasses of water? 2. What kind of music do you like? Those guys always get the top ratings.

Christopher Fain

Just want to say I love you guys! I’ve been a proud minister of Dudeism for quite some time. Crazy that you can send an email and then legally be allowed to marry people. Keep up the good work, my friends. Been listening to you since I was a junior in high school. That’s over a decade ago. Your show has irreparably shaped my views on what makes a film good.

Christopher Fain

The Shawn Colvin cover of “Viva Las Vegas” lands right when it’s used in Twin Peaks S3. I like it when I pops up on the series soundtrack. But YMMV, to each their own.

John Halski

Former cab driver here; I can only speak to the St. Louis cab scene, I’ll cop to not knowing how different NYC cabs are, but as long as you’re not a butt about it you can definitely ask for the music to change or be turned off. If the driver is rude about it after the request then that’s on them, but they train us to cater to what kind of ride you want.

Gone

Wish there were more movies like this one but I suppose that’s what makes it great

John Carter

Oof. Insert Andrew's 'hobbit vomit' in this space

calrodsomething

This podcast really ties this month together

Eren Keskin

It's not just you. I've never made it through the whole thing on multiple attempts, I always tap out and lose interest somewhere after the sheriff.

Sibyl Arnett

My mother's drink of choice, my entire life, has been Kaluha and soda water. It is....not great.

Dude

Tyler the Destroyer

That Disaronno commercial was so funny, the stupid look on the bartender’s face at the end was a classic!

Jaime Lee Ezell

Oof. I might be the only person on this planet to have seen this movie and dislike it. But maybe your episode will convince me otherwise and I'm due for a re-watch.

Dominic Kovell

This episode is just like, your opinion, man.

Graham Richardson

I want to do cozy mystery of this

Melvin shermen

Hell yeah, been waiting years for this one.

Lono's Oboe

Mark it 8, dude. Fuck yes!
