WLM - Robocop (1987)

On this month's WLM, the guys are chatting about one of the absolute best films about a dead guy who gets turned into a robot, Paul Verhoeven's Robocop! Has there been a smarmier, nastier villain than the great Kurtwood Smith's portrayal of Clarence Boddicker? How great are all the interstitial TV bits? And why have we, as a society, moved so far away from awesome stop-motion model work? PLUS: Who wouldn't have jumped at the opportunity to do coke with Miguel Ferrer in the '80s? Podcasters, leave!

Robocop stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Kurtwood Smith, Miguel Ferrer, Robert DoQui, Ray Wise, Felton Perry, Paul McCrane, Jesse D. Goins, and Ronny Cox as Dick Jones; directed by Paul Verhoeven.

Shut It Off

This is an awesome 4 part doc. One of the best ‘making of’ docs I’ve ever seen! https://youtu.be/lyBL9eINHO8?si=8FYU0VgeiD1B_gud

Shut It Off

I haven't seen the original trilogy robocop movies since I was a teenager. Really need to give them a rewatch.

Kureigu

Robocop Alpha Commando? Is that the one? If so it's indeed nuts! My friends and I watched what we could of it 10 years ago or so and it has the requisite quality for almost all 90s cartoons - it's utterly bonkers.

Zora McBride

So cool you all did this! I didn't see Robocop till my mid 20s when my friends sat me down and said, "OK you have to watch this." I was blown away by it. Scathing and eerily prescient satire that's also one hell of a fun movie! Plus some of my first exposure to Kirkwood Smith outside of 70s Show.

Zora McBride

I paused and watched that ER scene. Oh my god indeed. Brutal.

Alan Tuszynski

Also, that Canadian Robocop TV show is almost a Seeing is Believing. It's streaming on Peacock, but I remember watching it back in the 90s and it being terrible. There's a little kid mascot who's adopted by the police captain and a computer force ghost that's part of the main cast. In the second episode, Robocop is accused of murdering a Jim Bakker esque televangelist who's been leading Robocop protests at the precinct. When breaking the story, the female TV anchor goes "Oh Robo, say it ain't so!" Later in the episode, to escape from a SWAT team, a damaged Robocop backs his car into the river and then hides out in the sewers of Old Detroit where the force ghost helps the little kid save him. It's legit batshit crazy. You guys should at least do that episode.

I love this movie. Before I ever saw it, I saw a Making of feature on it at some Star Trek convention I went to in Jr. high. Nerd!

Jack B. Baker

Emil be like, “This is the really real world, man, there ain’t no comin’ back!”

luxmeansbucks

“Does it hurt? Does it hurt?” Im erect for that whole scene.

Sh'boom Sh'boom

She could not resist having a look at that bbc

If you need to scratch that itch, Andrew and Steve were the guests on Blank Check with Griffin and David for Total Recall.

James Ribaudo

next up spetters!

Ajax

Others thought they had similarities as well. Check out Batman x Robocop: The day the men found love.

A47

I request Total Recall every year for listener request month.

Paul

Robocop is like Batman, not one of the assholes fighting either of them ever thought, "hey maybe I should shoot that unprotected mouth"

Smaug

yall should wlm your way through all the Verhoeven bangers

Jonathan

Fuckin' hell yes, guys! Finally!

Knut Farstad

How about the way he says "ohh maaan!"? It's such a great (stoner) response.

Knut Farstad

I don't care what tier it's on, but we need a show of Steve talking about comic books. "Steve's Got Issues"

Matt

The “oh my god!” from Eric is incredible

Matt Nelson

Pretty sure when Robocop arrests Clarence, he walks through a car wash.

Paul Heidtman

Great movie. Classic. Fun. Wonderful satire. And deeper than it seems.

Beatrix

Andrew has the coolest laugh of anyone I’ve ever heard. And I’m an expert of other peoples’ cool laughs.

Matt Naylor

Had to crack out my dee vee dee (badow badow bow bow) to rewatch this, and it really is a perfect movie. Really going to have to get the 4K. I remember watching the TV edit a lot as a kid, which was hilarious. Fun me! Fun me! Fun me! Couldn't help but stick on Starship Troopers after watching this today. Verhoeven is wonderful.

Tony King

The dude who plays Emile also has a great death in The Blob, where he's snapped in half. That dude is a king of movie deaths

Steven Avalos

This is by far the funniest/best sequence of that remake thing.

Shaq Attack

This changed Robocop forever for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdSGpAI5r9Y

Kristian Binder

Watched this Monday and Total Recall last night. Fucking classics!!

Zane Magers

Mind if I... heart this up?

Eren Keskin

I wish the board game made for one of the in movie commercials was real... that being said.... BITCHES, LEAVE!

DMAC

I'm six minutes into the episode and now I feel compelled to share my Robocop history. Also, it's definitely a "kids are dumb" story. I don't remember when I saw Robocop, I just remember that I loved it. So, when Robocop II came out, my parents were going to take me to the theater to see it. However, we were furniture shopping before the showtime, and it became apparent that closing the deal on all this furniture would take too long and we would miss the showtime. I remember having a full on meltdown in the furniture store. God, I must have embarrassed my parents so badly that day. I don't think I ever saw Robocop III.

Stan Engle

Downloaded! It's gonna be a good ride to work this morning. Thanks, Guys!

Felipe Hallenbeck

Dead or alive, I'm listening to this podcast

John Locke

This is going to make my walk to work in the morning x100 better

Damon Laffin

I'd buy that for a dollar!
