Animation Damnation - ReBoot: "The Tearing"

On this month's AD, the gang is trying (and mostly failing) to make heads or tails of this horrendous ReBoot cartoon!

The episode in question, the show's pilot, "The Tearing," first started warping children's minds back on September 10, 1994 and features incredibly crude computer animation, disgustingly designed characters, awful writing, an incomprehensible plot, and even with all this going for it, the show managed to be picked up and last more than two weeks! The 90s were a wild-ass time for cartoons, folks! PLUS: Sylvester Stallone vs. John McAfee for grossest uses of household furniture by a maniacal dude!

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going!

Specifically skip all the way tto Web World Wars wothout context

this is a good show

Gagortion

Not going to lie, that episode super bummed me out. I get that the podcast's name is "We Hate Movies" - but the level of vitriol aimed at a beloved cartoon from me and my fellow Canadians childhood stung a bit.

Jacob Kay

I remember liking this show but I also haven't seen it in at least 20 years so that doesn't count for much.

Timothy Cameron Robbins Miller

Just finished watching Gridman: The Hyper Agent---the show Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad got its fight footage from. Sounds like the main difference between that and this is that Gridman/SSSS is actually entertaining.

Harry Seven

Funny that you mentioned the "Money for Nothing" video, because the guys who did that founded the studio that did ReBoot.

Sam

Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad had it all. Kaiju fights, several awesome catchphrases, one of them there Lawrence brothers as the lead..and course Tim Curry voicing the main villian *chef's kiss*

Swan Benson

I even know what episode I'm requesting, the Power Rangers parody.

Justine Prudhomme

Also beast wars was called beasties in Canada

Maurice Jones

As a Canadian Reboot was really important and something to be proud of at the time, the episode when Bob comes back had a Matrix Esque storyline before the matrix were bob figured out how to control the game and looked pretty cool himself. You guys are harsh critics and that’s why we love you but I assure you Reboot had some really cool shit in it for a kids shows including as someone pointed out, my first reference to Evil dead and mad max.

Maurice Jones

Canadian here, we used to get ads for ReBoot in theatres back on the day, before the trailers played. Never convinced me to watch the show tho.

Kristian Binder

You was 15 when Reboot hit. I was a HUGE computer nerd with a mile long hard-on for CG animation, but not matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get into this show. It was just too infantile compared to Batman and X-Men at the time.

Virtual Balboa

I'm Canadian and I definitely watched this as it aired, but I have no intention of ever watching it again. I remember even thinking it was goofy when I was 7 years old.

Carey Johnson

So we’re all going to request they watch more ReBoot, right?

Ryan Doyle

The new opening AD theme song is AWESOME!!

Vōclō

oh my god I would love a beastwars animation damnation. You guys would get so much mileage just out of Ratrap and the way he has a super stereotypical ny accent

jjmini

I feel like this was on before or after Video & Arcade Top 10 on YTV so that’s my excuse 😅

brynphd

Watch the "Reboot Strolling Players" for a recap on the show! It was at the end of season 3. I had a fun time with this show as a Canadian kid. Love how much you guys hated it.

heathen snow

You're gonna make a bunch of Canadians sad lol

Jorge Guerrero

Great song indeed

Tru$tn01

This came out on my 14th birthday

Truck McGuffin

I remember watching this series from the pilot up until the point where I got sick of seeing the same 4 or 5 episodes rerun over and over again. Wikipedia bears this out; Canada got the first 13 episodes over a four month period, but it took more than a year for the US audience. 1994-Me thought the animation was good.

Erin Hardy

That song was wonderful, holy shit.

Infinite Terror

Weird, this aired on my 10th birthday and I must have watched it.

Forrest Lillibridge

I too was a Saturday morning watcher of ReBoot. The only real memory that sticks with me is The Road Warrior game episode where they redo the end gas truck chase in polygon nightmare version.

David Chávez

I assumed “Bob” was named after the failed O.S. in the 90’s, “Microsoft Bob”. Unlike Windows 95, MS Bob was designed to look like rooms in a cartoon house with toon characters strewn about. It too was poorly received.

MikeyMiniMoto

I love the new chiptune take on the intro! It’s just so chill.

Brent Cowan

Since the pilot is called The Tearing, I hope the very last episode is called The Ripping

Felipe Sobreiro

We are NOT proud of this STEVE

Matt

One of my old mentors from school worked on this show. And he was showing a scene where Bob comes in through the window. And poking fun at the nonsense body mechanics. 3D rigs have come along way, as well as the lighting, rendering, texturing, everything.

Steven Avalos

You're going to get people trying to tell you ReBoot was great. They are mistaken. It was at BEST a stop-gap between re-runs of Dragonball and Looney Tunes

Matt

Which all sounds cool, but none of that is in this first episode--yowza!

We Hate Movies

Can't wait to listen. Might have my heart broke because reboot was great. Season 3 is some incredible story telling for kids and has a whole episode dedicated to evil dead 2

ediblegenius

Yo! That opening song go!
