Episode 594 - Kill Bill: Vol. 1

On this month's We Love Movies selection, the gang is tackling BOTH parts of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill saga. First up on this ep, it's all about Vol. 1! How fantastic is the music in this film? Has a QT cast ever been better, or more stacked? And will we ever see a theatrical or disc release of The Whole Bloody Affair? PLUS: Eric takes Arnold's pet donkey, Whiskey hostage and demands Arnie release the extended cut of Conan the Barbarian!

Be sure to check your Patreon feed next week for the release of the second half of our convo, all about Vol. 2! #StayTuned

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 stars Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Julie Dreyfus, Chiaki Kuriyama, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, and Sonny Chiba as Hattori Hanzo; directed by QT.

Episode 594 - Kill Bill: Vol. 1

Comments

This is the best movie Tarantino made Not one of the alt history trilogy or django Kill bill 2 is awesome & great but kill bill 1 is tighter and just amazing music & just another if not the 4th masterpiece by Tarry. After that it’s downhill. And i dont get ouatih at all If he can make something even close to kill bill i’d be impressed

I’m behind so playing catch-up here but I had to point out that in Japan the Crazy 88 fight scene was in full color in theaters and the initial DVD release which I still own. Sadly all Blu-Ray editions used the US cut so I just bought the US versions of those. I’ll never accept the B&W was necessary having seen it in color.

Chris Vaughn

I've always liked the second movie better, I love Uma in this one but I'm a Lucy Liu hater. I find her bland and lacking in range in most of her performances and I've always felt she takes some of the air out of the interactions between Uma and herself in this one

Smaug

Ah shoot. Time for some hot, hot foot talk. Les gooooo

Jarod

Denial is a hell of a drug

Smaug

"Beatrix". Or maybe "Kiddo".

Christopher Preciado

There's live music in the Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

Gary Dennis

There's live music in Hateful 8 - Daisy Domergue singing Jim Jones at Botany Bay...

Alethia St. Joan

Feet are very important in many Asian cultures. So there's a reason for all of it in this movie. He may have a fetish, but I don't and I loved what he was going for.

Ray

I would love to know what was worth bleeping at 1:09:12 in this episode. WHM episode on QT with a BLEEP EDIT?!?! Truly I expect to learn a new word here

Luke

Yeah, long hair, too. It's just anime bill.

Christopher Preciado

That's been my headcanon since the jump.

Erin Hardy

I saw this with a friend I fancied, my roommate, and another friend. I loved it, but everyone else was appalled and started shitting on the film immediately and the friend I fancied hooked up with my roommate that night.

Erin Hardy

I think it's touched upon in the episode - I also love both volumes but the great thing about Vol. 2 is just how quiet it is. After the chaos of the first volume, Vol. 2 plays it more chill. With the exception of the opening flashback, I don't think there are really any scenes in the movie with more than 2 or 3 people in it at one time.

Busiris

Whose name are we beeping? I legitimately don’t know or get it.

Wesley Hall

Fantastic review you guys, made me realize I’ve yet to see part 2 since the year it came out! Regarding the Crazy 88’s name: In Japan, the number eight is also considered lucky, but the reason is a bit different from that in Chinese ethos. The Japanese favor the number because of the shape of the character (八) The symbol broadens gradually, giving an idea of growth linked with prosperity. https://www.88cut.com/single-post/2015/08/12/the-number-8-means-more-than-just-luck

Daniel Cloud

Does anyone else think it was a young Bill who killed O'Rens father? based on the way he held his sword and the rings.

DMAC

The ultimate pop culture post modern masterpiece. I second the sentiments that 1 QT hit the zeitgeist, 2 this was the logical next step after 2000 when culture died, and 3 QT had to (slightly) change his style after this because he threw the whole kitchen sink of homages in this.

John Carter

just the pick-me-up i needed. thanks, gang <3

Hercules

When this came out I was hanging out with a girl I fancied and a mutual friend of ours. They suggested seeing a movie. I said "how about Kill Bill". I think I sold it as a wacky Kung-Fu movie. I think I lost them at "Pussy Wagon". I know I lost them when limbs starting getting hacked off. In retrospect we should have seen School of Rock.

Matt

Had a great laugh at bleeping [BEEEEEEEP]'s name.

Christopher Schuber

Love the name bleep!

Joe Barrett

Fellas: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR cut by QT does screen infrequently at the New Bev. However, it's usually billed as a "mystery screening" & tends to screen at midnight on Fridays and/or Saturdays.

Cody Downs

Thank you Chris for adding more to this already dense movie.

Alexander Farr

In 'Kill Bill', the actual name of The Bride (Uma Thurman) is bleeped out whenever someone says it, so it's a parody of that.

Z

Naive question: why are the guys bleeping out some words?

Simon Law

I'm some random dude who's with you on that one. But I also think it's fine that a lot of people feel differently. I also didn't like Hateful Eight much - one and done. I love the rest of his stuff, though.

Dominic Kovell

And I have a fresh episode to listen to during the ride home from work. Nice!

Felipe Hallenbeck

Thursday night is lookin uppp🥷

Jamie

Kill Bill and Jackie Brown were always misses for me. I don't know why, I acknowledge they're good movies...but they just never clicked for me for some reason. Feel free to throw rocks at me because I'm aware that some consider these Tarantino's best.

Michael Daniels

This is a real gift, thank you!! #whm4ever
