Episode 589 - Dune (2021)

On this month's WLM, the guys are talking about one of the absolute best cinematic spectacles from last year, Denis Villeneuve's Dune! How incredible is the production design all over this thing? Does Paul have the hots for his mom? How absolutely boss is this score? And who among us wouldn't take that Harkonnen oil dip? PLUS: Duncan Idaho has a wild time at his sister's wedding!

Dune stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Charlotte Rampling, and Babs Olusanmokun; directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Episode 589 - Dune (2021)

Comments

The jab at Tim Hortons is valid. TH sucks hard.

Brian Cardin

I think Paul does have the hots for his mom, but to be fair, if my mom looked like Rebecca Ferguson I would probably have the hots for her too.

Matt

Denis Villeneuve continues to make the best looking films and also doing as much possible to build the world, the characters, and doing so without it becoming too much or bad. Damn was it a beautiful film and a great story. I wish they would be Blade Runner 2049 now.

DMAC

I lost it

Joshua Gray

Duke Leto spots the worm

Just want to say that "you know who failed the Gom Jabbar....Jon Benet Ramsey." made me laugh so hard I almost wrecked my car.

Dustin Martin

Yeah well that is a plot of the saga, but what he said was like Frank Herbert said something personally in an interview of something

Josan

I guess the women in the novel do have a multigenerational plan of eugenics and genocide to eventually breed a superman who more or less ruins the whole galaxy?

Winson Paine

I was listening to this score the other day, hope y’all give Zimmer his props.

B Rob

As someone that kinda loves the six Herbert Dune novels I found this movie to be sterile and devoid of most of the magic that the Dune universe has. Obviously that is just my opinion, its okey to like a movie :P Whoever listening to the episode there is a point where Cabin says "oh you should hear what Herbert said about women", and I'm curious to know what is he refering to, because I've never heard anything about Herbert making any statement of the sorts.

Josan

This Movie is fantastic

Tri Force Tony

Finally listening to this, comin in HOT since I kinda hated Dune when I was watching it and loved Don't Look Up, gonna be a top ep

Winson Paine

I'm not much of Star Wars guy, but I came out of this film with the opinion that Lucas ate Herbert's breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, supper and had room for snacks, and gobbled all the way to the bank. Fair play, it worked, but the neck of him, honestly.

Steven Cookson

I was a in a Pig Destroyer music video.

FiddlersGreenDay

I simply cannot believe that they used that take of Brolin saying ‘They’re BRRUUUtal’. It’s well beyond the register of the rest of that conversation. a truly powerful acting choice.

Jules O'D

Chris mentioned that on TV the sandworm scene is pitch black, that is my experience in the theater as well.

Hell yeah!! My family caught it too, because my youngest goes to a special needs school and can't do at-home learning, so we knew we'd be at risk... but no complications from my asthma, which I'm attributing to the vacciiiiine!

Nora Dallaire

For a little Mamoa action fix, Try Badlands w/ Keanu. Fun flick.

Jade Buchmyer

I'm just gonna put this out there: I'm in the throes of omicron, vaxxed and boosted, high as fuck...and I still got it and it is FUCKING me up. But...I'm not in a hospital because the vaccines FUCKING WORK

Michael Daniels

When I’m emperor, operating a subwoofer in multi-family dwellings will be a capital offense. Watch your ass, Jupin!

MANTE IV

Easily one of the best films of 2021.

TDB

Hell yeah!

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

I have been waiting for this remake for a long time even though I have a love of the 1984 version. Was so glad to hear this was your WLM of 2021, the mild annoyance of my wife can attest to that lol.

Colby latham

Loved this episode! Can’t wait for the follow up in 2 years!

Trinity Dahmus

This movie ruled my ass. I read Dune for the first time when I was 11, Villaneuve does such a great job with scifi

Smaug

“Dark City” for WLM—yes, yes, yes!

Paul

Seriously, like a movie being fun is a bad thing. At least things actually happen in Marvel movies. I'm not checking the time every couple minutes like I did with this.

Subjectivity

Like the original, I just couldn't get through it. Probably for the same reasons. Lots of sitting around talking about things that don't make sense, and not even in a fun way.

Subjectivity

Best movie ever

Joshua Gray

shaka

Yes!!!!

Ed Dougherty

Man! I've been waiting for this one! Now look, it's ok to NOT like a movie, but I really dug this like a Shai-Hulud. A slow burn but one of the few movies in the last few years that I took seriously. Can't wait to hear this one!

Mike Rivera

I guess I have to watch it again or read the book or something. I didn't enjoy it as much as I was hoping to. It also doesn't help that the theatre I saw it in was having projector issues and the sand worm and several parts of the desert scenes were imperceivable due to the dimness of the projection. And if Paul doesn't have the hots for his mom, I know I do.
