American Moviementary

On their final commentary of the year, the gang is chatting over the wildly entertaining and totally outrageous documentary, American Movie! How admirable is Mark's refusal to quit on his many, life-crushing projects? How uncomfortable is it taking an old person to the bank? Everyone's Thanksgivings are like this one, right? And can we get Mike's score put out on vinyl, Mondo? What's the deal? PLUS: Clint Eastwood needs to make this into a narrative!

American Movie features Mark Borchardt, Mike Schank, Tom Schimmels, Cliff Borchardt, Alex Borchardt, Chris Borchardt, Tom Beach, Joan Petrie, Robert Richard Jorge, Dean Allen, Tommy Dallace, Ken Keen, and Bill "Uncle Bill" Borchardt; directed by Chris Smith.

For those who need to stop or restart the commentary sync, remember we're watching the standard def DVD and the sync itself starts at 00:06:23 of this audio track, matched up to 00:00:05 of the film's timecode.

Hey y'all! Just got done doing a show with our band, relaxing with a couple tall glasses of water and this here *mentary. released on my 34th birthday! lol I've only watched this once before, and phww, I didn't realize how bleak it was. Inspiring, funny in a painful sorta way, and mighty bleak. "I was so happy I had someone to drink vodka with!" ... I got to thinking about this again because I was listening to an album and heard an ambient track that included the sample about Mark calling Morocco at 2 in the morning. thought I'd share it. Thanks for doing what you do, we love it! Don't forget to wear the blue! https://hauntologist.bandcamp.com/track/waves-of-concrete

RIP Mike.

...very thankful that David Letterman featured Mark and Mike as remote correspondents on several late 90s episodes of The Late Show; otherwise I’d maybe never have discovered one of my favorite films...those segments (touring Menomonee & San Francisco) can be found online, as can this amazing deleted scene of Mark in a drive-thru that perfectly encapsulates middle class Midwestern life in the 90s... https://youtu.be/snOmCDR89Xg

We sat down tonight and watched this and…even my 24 year old son with major/minor in creative writing and film design was mesmerized. Mark obviously has filmmaking talent, and his kids being able to quite Apocalypse Now at maybe 8 years old…my kids loved Fight Club and Pulp Fiction before they were 10. The love of movies and the magic surrounding them…was quite a thing. I sure as fuck wish MICHAEL STIPE (credited producer) had given Mark a sliver of his millions to finish his film. It may have been garbage, but it also may have been A24’s 2018 major release. As always, thanks to Andrew, Stephen, Eric and Chris for making this miserable world a little more tolerable.

highlight of my fuckin year man! Been a staple rewatch in my house for many years. You need to watch Mark on Letterman for his home town tour, its like a bonus to the movie. https://youtu.be/CDV2WoN-tVE

Thank you for introducing this movie to me, I know you guys have talked about it for years, but I finally just bought it after listening to the commentary (strange order I know) but it’s such a strangely beautiful, hilarious yet heartbreaking in some ways and somehow inspiring doc, it was a wonderfully fun watch
