Episode 583 - Alien

On this month's bonus WLM, the guys are chatting about Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror masterpiece, Alien! How fantastic is it to watch a movie with this much precision set work, starring a bunch of sweaty, salt-of-the-earth actors? How cool is Tom Skerritt's Bleep-Bloop room? Has Sigourney Weaver ever been better? Are they wearing that same diaper throughout the whole cryo-sleep? And does this film have cinema's first Trash Can Scare? PLUS: Look out, folks, it's England's own "Rotten" Rid!

Alien stars Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Yaphet Kotto, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, Helen Morton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph; directed by Ridley Scott.

That's setting a really high bar for good movies early in your life. Kudos to your mom

Tim O'

My mom took me to see Aliens.... I was 3.

Ray,thisisWalter

I was so disappointed in Prometheus. I went solo to the theater to see it I was so excited. It started off pretty good. But just got dumber and dumber. I will admit, I laughed pretty hard when Charlize got squished because she refused to zig OR zag, but I don't think that's the reaction they were going for ...

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

I absolutely loathe Prometheus and Covenant. The fact that they like those movies makes me take whatever opinion they give with a grain of salt.

Gabryel Steinmetz

In Aliens, they make jokes about Arcturian p*ssy, so there are definitely other alien species.

J Foster

Rotten Rid! 😅😅😅 As someone who is British this is extremely accurate!

Lee Stacey

If you're ever rewatching Alien and wanted an approximation of the theater experience seeing it when it opened, I put together the trailers that may have run at the beginning of it back in the day. Enjoy! https://www.dropbox.com/s/1caxsvw0dpphs2u/May%2025%2C%201979%20trailer%20reel.mp4?dl=0

Thanks guys for making my December and explaining def one of the best sci- fi horror movies of the 20th century. Love ur banter about Scott saying he wanted the feel of Texas Chainsaw in space and u feel the dread in that area where no one can hear you scream lol. The title card, the Female hero final woman, the writing and the great set design wove this movie into a must watch at any age at any time in our lives. Thank you for the knowledge and the humor u bring to the table.😉 🤟 Loyal Patreon Subscriber Bryan from Lake Stevens, Wa

I asked my mom about what it was like seeing it in theaters, here's her response: "I went to Alien with a friend who had seen it already and made him tell me when the chest scene was coming up. It was very scary, I had to cover my eyes at times and the soundtrack was really anxiety making."

Jacob Kay

2001 had cryo sleep

My mother saw this in the theater when it came out. Her boyfriend at the time took her. She told me she was already not into the movie but got talked into it. She had enough at the chest-burster scene. Left the theater and nearly threw up. Happens to be one of my favorite movies. Glad to hear you all are as big of fans of the Alien franchise as I am. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays all!

Jarod

Alien(s) are my two favorites and hard to chose between the two. I saw Alien3 in theaters when I was 12 and hated it, I think mostly because I was more connected to Newt from pt 2 and was upset. Years later I went back and have a love for it. I still can't get behind 4 though. I too had a cat that I named Jones when I was a kid after Riley s cat.

Darryl Bowen

I’ve called Resurrection in for LRM for YEARS, they need to cover it!!

Drew Stewart

We are adopting an orange cat today and now I have to come up with a different name, thanks a lot Steve! :)

Dan sulin

Seeing John Hurt and Harry Dean Stanton made me wish for David Lynch on the WLM feed. I'm sure other patrons would agree as well.

Eren Keskin

H.R. Giger used an actual human skull from India when creating the Xenomorph's head. When Dallas turns the light on the Alien just before being snatched, you can see the eye sockets.

Eren Keskin

Was I wrong to just want the Resurrection talk to continue? That film is my kind of stupid, and so interesting. I loved this one of course Great job gentlemen! #buttpiss

Robert Carroll

How about "that scene" in Hereditary?

sicDaniel

Ridley Scott hand off on actors, creates great visuals in movies. Sounds like Ridley Scott might be similar to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. George Lucus and Ridley Scott are cut from the same cloth.

Tristan

An excellent WLM!

TDB

My favorite line that's worth cranking the volume to hear clearly is Ripley saying, "micro changes in air density my ass" as they're coming into the room where the sensor picks up the cat. Fast forward to Covenant where it's 2 hours of Fassbender jerking off over a Philosophy 201 textbook

Smaug

My favorite Mad Magazine movie workup was this film. Simply fantastic

Edward Carlson

During quarantine I had a tall glass of water for the first time in a decade plus and watched this. It was an *excellent* choice.

Matt

I love the talk about how patient this movie is. It's true, you don't see a lot of that in action/horror/sci-fi anymore.

Evan Doboga

Picture Eric, on his mechanical keyboard, following Sean Connery’s Finding Forrester advice to “pound the keys” and muttering to himself that he’s “the man now, dog.”

Jason

I also had a hard time thinking of a 21st century reveal at the level of (or near?) the chest-bursting scene, and all I got is ***SPOILERS MAYBE*** the reveal of horse people in Sorry to Bother You

Zak Ashmore

I saw this movie for the first time last year...it was amazing. Instant fave (and so was Aliens). Glad to hear your thoughts.

Zuri

Okay an episode on Alien is fantastic and all, but I wanna hear that 90210 Vivica A fox race relations talk. So excited for melr0210 this month. Huuuuuuunnnhhh (billy noise)

Ray

“Dark Star” is free to watch on YouTube. I started watching it. Imagine the WHM gang on a space mission. It’s good!

Paul

Oh man, been waiting for you guys to do this movie. I am many excite.

Kevin L Laird

Until I saw this movie, I never realized how scary watching dots on a screen could be.

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

This is one of those movies I wish I could see for the first time again. It unravels in such a brilliant way with how they tease out the dread and uncertainty of what the Alien is and does. By the time we're watching it crab walk out of the shadows it could basically do anything and still be terrifying.

Alexander Farr

Matchstick Men is pretty good

Felipe Sobreiro

Dudes alien resurrection is so ridiculously awesome

Pedro Elizondo Jr

Just gotta love getting 2 fresh episodes in a week's time. Thanks, guys--for all you do, this Bud's for you.

Felipe Hallenbeck

My third favorite movie of all time, tied with "Aliens" to form a great double feature. Thank you :)

Beatrix

The timing couldn't be better! Now I have something to listen to at work tonight

Deitrich Tennin

A “so-so” day was just made so much better when I saw the Patreon app notification for this episode on my phone - thank you WHM Gang!
