Episode 576 - Ghostbusters

On this month's very special We Love Movies episode, the guys are chatting about one of the all-time great film comedies—and yes, it's certainly a comedy—Ghostbusters! How much of a drag is it to learn that Winston's role was originally much larger? Are there ghosts causing mischief outside the five boroughs or is it just NYC's problem? Whose idea was the ghost beej? And how dreadful does this new one look? PLUS: How much of a nuisance is Louis Tully at those tenant board meetings?

Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, David Margulies, and Jordan Charney as Hey! Dean Yeager!; directed by Ivan Reitman.

Episode 576 - Ghostbusters

Comments

There was only two things about the female ghostbusters movie I didn't like and that was Bill Murrays sceptic character not coming back as a ghost (seemed like the best joke for that character) and the musical bit being cut from the movie and moved to the credits ( the scenes around where its meant to be end up a weird jump cut without it) over than that I liked it.

Kureigu

I heard a video essay once that theorized that this movie has a pro-Libertarian voice and now I can't unsee it.

Ray,thisisWalter

Ray's private sector work was under an assumed name with the Cia in spies like us.

J HEASLEY

New to this. I like the commentary, but it's hard to get through all the bed wetting about Afterlife.

Antoine Cantrell

How the subject of ghost YouTube could be discussed and nobody said Boo-Tube is beyond me.

Daniel Mayer

The only places that should be getting new Ghostbusters products are the toy store and the comic shop.

Mark D Myers

Note: Winston is actually the first to be asked if he's ok. Ray asks him before the come out from hiding.

Tyler

Turn down the ads volume on the main feed OW MY FREAKIN EARS

SomeCallMeStalin

The “Tobin’s Spirit Guide” is a franchise tie-in, the entries are all from the first two movies, the video game, and the IDW comic.

Drew Stewart

Hey Andrew in 6th Day you were thinking of America that uses blankets to pretend stock is there when it isn’t. Get your white American head out of your ass and stop lying about nations you have no clue about

SomeCallMeStalin

You guys have now made me want to watch the new Ghostbusters movie. It's going to be a beautiful train wreck.

John Locke

He's an accountant! He actually doesn't know anything about them personally! It's so great.

Drew Stewart

They barely talk about the movie

Adam Hughes

Public service announcement: The Ghostbusters video game, which features all the original cast besides Moranis and was written using Ramis's and Akroyd's work on Ghostbuster 3's unmade script (they also have writing credits but I dunno how much they actively wrote) is available digitally on Xbox and Playstation. If you want an "authentic" Ghostbusters movie, whatever that means, this is it.

Michael Daniels

Bustin' makes me feel good.

Eren Keskin

Fun fact: That library ghost was designed by the horror comic book legend Bernie Wrightson.

Eren Keskin

The need for standing up for this new movie in here is embarrassing. Also the endless regurgitation of IP isn’t just for the kids. It’s aimed at us, and it’s more than okay to rip on how shameless and uncreative 95% of Hollywood is. Enjoy the episode people, your franchises will keep churning out the same old shit. Not even the grand power of 4 guys talking about movies can stop that. Unless perhaps they say “Do not worry about ___”

Andrew Bowers

I don’t think they’re gatekeeping. They’ve repeated ad nauseam that they like the 2016 movie, which most Ghostbusters fans deemed a national emergency at the time. You ever think that maybe the trailers just make the movie look bad? There’s nothing wrong with forming an opinion based on a trailer, particularly when you internet presence deals in hyperbole. If this felt like a new fad and not weird bet-hedging fan service they’d probably be kinder. I did not think at any point during their mentions of the upcoming film that they were gatekeeping.

Jarrod Hornbeck

Smaug

i dunno man, objecting to a cynical cash grab featuring the CGI likeness of a beloved dead actor seems like a valid opinion to me

Jack

You mentioned Moranis’ improvised lines during the party scene, but you didn’t catch one that is now one of my favorite jokes in the movie as an adult with somewhat of an understanding of finances. When he introduces Ted and Annette Fleming he says “Ted has a small carpet cleaning business in receivership and Annette’s drawing a salary from a deferred bonus from two years ago.” So, instead of just introducing the guests, he basically tells a room of strangers that the woman doesn’t work and that the man has a government lien on his business to avoid bankruptcy. I did not understand this joke when I was young, and it finally clicked more recently I freaking howled.

Jarrod Hornbeck

I saw thus movie 13 times in theaters the summer of 1984. I was 12, and there was nothing else to do. Fat kid summer with Spengler, Venkman, Zeddemore, and Stantz as counselors. It was awesome.

Leesha Olivier

I'm here for this Turtles merch aside.

Infinite Terror

You guys jest, but if you started a new tier with a Gleep Glossary-style "Tobin's Spirit Pod" sideshow, I'd be here for that in a big way.

Mark Bisi

Holy shit! Give afterlife a minute. It isn't even out yet. Fuck.

J HEASLEY

Aw yes! Time for another rewatch before listening. One of my absolute favourite movies.

Tony King

I actually purchased the novelization to the movie 'End of Days' around the time that movie came out. I was that much of a die-hard Arnold fan back then, and I can distinctly remember thinking "this movie's gonna be so fucking edgy" while I read. Fun times.

Zach Samborski

Thanks for this episode guys! This movie is one of my favorites. Can't wait to listen to this episode. P.s. I also need to write into the Mailbag and let you know about the time I literally shit my pants while listening to your Ghostbusters 2 episode. Thanks again.

P.S. Munson

Smaug

Eric = Venkman, Chris = Stanz, Andrew = Egon, Steve = Winston

James Boyd

The Marx Brothers film they referenced was actually, A Night at the Opera.

chris pike

At least once a year for me, can't imagine not watching for a decade!

David Thompson

But can Eric top "pee-pee floppy cock" as a catchphrase?

Jake Welsh

That librarian ghost was way more than 5 year old me could handle

Michael Daniels

haven't listened yet, but thanks anyway, gang! this is exactly the pick-me-up i need

Hercules

Friday night's looking up now. Thank you all.

Jake Welsh

My favorite comedy of all time. Thank you.

Beatrix

Hell yeah. WHMin makes me feel good

Frank Grimes

Many years ago, WHM finally convinced me that Ghostbusters 2 is a bad movie (that I still love). Can't wait to start this WLM and maybe get a rewatch in this weekend.
