Episode 563 - Mad Max

On this month's WLM, the guys are chatting about the stone-cold Aussie action classic, Mad Max! How fabulous is each and every car crash in this film? Has anyone written better character names than George Miller? And how about all these Aussie slang words the guys learn this month, huh?! HOON! PLUS: Beware the Moon Wobble!

Mad Max stars Hollywood Scumbag Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, Jim Bisley, Tim Burns, Roger Ward, and Hugh Keays-Byrne as Toecutter; directed by George Miller.

I’d also recommend the wild Oz-ploitation movie “Stunt Rock”

Kevin Lynch

Haven't seen it mentioned here anywhere, but the incident Chris was trying to think of was Ving Rhames pulling Jack Lemmon on to the stage at the Golden Globes during his acceptance speech. An endearing moment, even though Lemmon was visibly embarrassed.

Troy Conner

Indeed! Immortalised as the fabulously sleazy Gordon Farkus in still fantastic 80's comedy the Big Steal, starring a young Ben Mendelssohn.

Tom

Check out the 80's Australian film BMX Bandits - another bike movie like RAD. It features a young Nicole Kidman, and yet another character named Goose.

QB

Hey guys..... Cundalini wants his hand back.

Al Bria

I mean, this is a fun movie. This is a cool movie. I like this movie a lot. But Road Warrior is an all time banger. It doesn’t become less great just because a lot of people like it

Sh'boom Sh'boom

You stupid assholes are suffering from regency bias. Road Warrior is amazing.

Sh'boom Sh'boom

I feel like you guys have license to use "hoon." I hear it all the time in US car culture and it isn't meant offensively to members of ethnic, racial, or sexual identity groups, just young men being assholes. "Hooning a car" is how folks will often describe behavior like doing donuts, taking turns at excessive speeds to make the backend slide out, etc. Pretty much anything idiots do in Chargers on a daily basis

Smaug

I'm so sad they didn't talk about the baby playing with a gun early on in the film, because that is incredible

Sehnsucht666

We have “Hoon Laws” here in Oz where if you’re caught speeding excessively the cops take your car and crush it….the moon still wobbles

Tom h

Yes do acid and watch the passion of christ sequel. Put it on the patreon feed

Pedro Elizondo Jr

Am I the only one who thought Johnny the Boy was Adam Ant all these years

James Boyd

Ya Fuckin' hoon Motha.

Mattie

My dad was in Veitnam and was the same way. We had a chance to go on a helicopter tour and he immediately shut that shit down, lol. Thanks for your service!

Paul Heidtman

Hey! Me too

fastandsloppy

I want them to see that Passion of the Christ sequel while high on acid, if this film should ever happen, just so they can do a podcast on it afterwards. We need to hear about that experience. I want my Passion-cast now!!

Blake Ferronetti

Didn't expect to see IMDb telling me that Roger Ward (Fifi from Mad Max) has 7 projects in preproduction right now. Damn.

"Main Force Patrol" and the recruitment scenes aimed at Max really make it seem like the MFP is sort of like MLB. I was chalking it up to me seeing Major League recently, but then after the scene where Max sees Goose as a crispy critter in the hospital and denies that it's actually Goose, Max tells his very Manhuterish wife at his very Manhunterish beach home, "He was so full of living, you know. He ran the franchise on it." Maybe it was more of a dig at fast food than sports teams, but I dunno. EDIT: Max "Off beat." (As in beat reporters that follow sports teams?) Head coach: "You're a winner, Max! You're on the top shelf! And I'm not gonna lose you because of some crazy notion about quitting!" Yeah, seems like some post-Slap Shot police gangs as sports team angle here, too. A lot to unpack in this one.

Clifton Jewett

It's currently on Hulu. I listened to half the episode and having a blast. The scene about someone getting set free due to people not showing up is true-to-life in 2021 St. Louis, MO. "On July 14, St. Louis Circuit Court judge Jason Sengheiser dismissed murder charges against Brandon Campbell, who is suspected of fatally shooting a man in April 9, 2020. Sengheiser’s order came after an attorney from the prosecutor’s office failed to appear for three hearings and failed to respond to an order from the judge compelling discovery."

Clifton Jewett

wow the WHM guys reference "if you want a [insert whatever, was a toe in The Big Lebowski], I can get you a toe" so often, too, but I didn't think of it

Clifton Jewett

The best. I love movies where you can still feel and see a hand made quality to them. So fuckin good.

Jonathan

Sax player here, it is in fact a tenor sax, good job

Calvin Lindfors

On the topic of subtitles...the ones on Paramount+ fucking ssssuuuuuck. Way too tiny, way too white, and the font is like Times New Roman

Michael Daniels

Moontastrophe!

Robin Fry

Hoon wobble.

Ray

Hey gang! I’m a veteran, 6+ years in the Marine Corps. I say this because I was in a helicopter squadron, worked in the QA department eventually, flew on them all the time, 2 tours in Afghanistan. Would never fly in a helicopter now that I’m out. Those things are dangerous. I don’t make a big deal out of it, but I do not go on helicopter sightseeing tours, etc…

Geoffrey Mitchell

As an Australian i approve and ❤ this. Good job. Sprog is slang for both kids and jizz. Fun stuff.

Scott Ferris

As a listener from British prison island, I offer my services to be WHM's official Australian to English translator. You can pay me in beer and Vegemite

Boston Roberts

Steve Bisley? Not Jim?

Cooper87

If you're looking for a moon 9/11, I recommend 2002's The Time Machine, in which Guy Pierce goes to the future and sees us blow up the moon.

Michael Daniels

One of the fun things about Mad Max is that it was filmed in really mundane locations around Melbourne. You’ll be driving over a bridge and be like ‘oh hey the Nightrider died up there’. And the car workshop is just Melbourne University. Anyway, glad you guys like this very weird piece of Australiana

Jules O'D

Fun Fact: "Toecutter" isn't a name George Miller came up with. It's an Australian term for a specific kind of professional criminal, specifically the kind that preys on other criminals. The term "Toecutter" refers to their main line, torturing other criminals they have kidnapped to get them to give up their stash, with cutting off toes with a hatchet or cleaver being one of the traditional methods.

The Wheel

Oh hell yeah

Josh

What!? I may not get the reference, Felix, but with this & next week's episode -- the guys just have to cover ROAD WARRIOR as a WLM & the franchise is complete. (Sidenote: Eric explicitly mentioned on the CAN'T HARDLY WAIT commentary last year that covering the entire MAD MAX franchise is a "bucket list" wish akin to the original STAR WARS films from '77-'83.)

Cody Downs

What a pleasant surprise.

Paul

Well happy birthday to me 🙌🙌🙌

Ray

"Mediocrrrrrre!"

Felix, DJ

I figured it would come same week as thunderdome

Ray

Finally -- I was starting to lose hope this WLM would happen before the month ended. Right, Felipe!?
