Episode 552 - A History of Violence

On this month's WLM, the gang is chatting about David Cronenberg's bloody slice of Americana, A History of Violence! How incredible is this Viggo performance? How were he, Maria and Ed not nominated, but Hurt was? And was there no one else to play this son besides "Jesse Ain't-enberg"? PLUS: The guys sound off on cream ales. ::hobbit vomit sound::

A History of Violence stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, William Hurt, and Stephen McHattie; directed by David Cronenberg.

Comments

I went into this cold and so was very surprised by the restaurant scene.

Jacob Kay

the way you all describe croenenberg's shazam is exactly how banner changes in "the immortal hulk".

Araña

Nice ep, bro-heems.

Christopher Preciado

I think Jesse Isn't-berg rolls off the tongue better.

Ray

Howdya figure

Ray

You're John's sister, Joan, right?

Ray

I lost it at “Who’s Joan Cusack?” “You’re Joan Cusack.”

TyrannosaurusRen

I’ve been listening since episode four and I love the show, but geez you guys are a bunch of caitiffs.

What a relief to hear the guys mention how the son resembled Jessie Eisenberg. I kept halfway convincing myself it was him before thinking "no, you fool--you're mixing up actors yet again!" I'm far from a movie buff so I often mix actors up. Case in point, when I saw Ed Harris I thought it was William Hurt for too long of a minute. Honestly, I had just gotten the two of them straight before who should join the movie at the end but William Hurt?? I watch these movies cold so I had no idea he was in this. Oh, boy. They are two sinister-type actors, so I don't think my slight confusion is too off track. This podcast definitely aids me in my continuing movie education. Haha. Thanks as always.

It tries so hard to be wacky it shoots past it and circles back into boring

Michael Daniels

Yeah, not only is it a bad movie but the fact that it's clearly in on the joke should disqualify it from being covered on the show.

profondo robbo

I watched it when it came out and I absolutely hated it

Felipe Sobreiro

Some would say the WHM gang has “A History of Violence.”

Paul

Lemme save you 2 hours: Shoot Em Up isn't worth a rewatch

Michael Daniels

"A Planet of 69ing" is what in Star Trek they call Risa

Felipe Sobreiro

I'm uncomfortable with how hungry the 69-ing conversation made me

Vicky I

I adore this movie

Beer City Media

I bought this at Walmart in the five dollar bin a long time ago on a whim. That first scene took me for a loop!

My grandma Betty (maysherestinpeace - channeling Pratchett) loved Viggo Mortenson so much courtesy of LotR she made me buy all his movies for her. Hidalgo was a favorite. She thought Eastern Promises was good if a bit violent. BOY HOWDY was she shocked by this movie. She liked it but “did they really need that sex scene?”

Erica Taylor

I went with a friend to see this movie in the theater way back when. During the restaurant scene when Viggo dispatched those baddies, an almost full theater was watching silently, until my friend decided that that was the funniest thing he'd seen all year and started to laugh loudly and uncontrollably. You could feel the shock of the other patrons hang in the air, stunned that somebody would find such a gruesome scene so hilarious. I couldn't get out of the theater fast enough after it was over. Thanks to my jerk friend, that's the only thing I remember from the movie. That, and the sex scene.

Stan Engle

Nate: it's "Eastern Promises". It shows up every time the guys are on YouTube. In fact, someone complimented the poster in a early pandemic WHM Mailbag.

Cody Downs

I can never remember which Viggo movie it is that Cabin has a poster of - A History of Violence or Eastern Promises... or is it LOTR: Return of the King? All three are so similar.
