Episode 536 - Goodfellas

On this month's WLM, the 2021 Listener Request Month spreads to Patreon as the guys get the chance to chat about one of the all-time greats, Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas! How on Earth does a person watch this start to finish and think the film glamorizes mob life? Is it possible to watch this movie without eating Italian food right before or immediately after? And what's everyone's favorite mobster nicknames—Jimmy Two Times? Freddy No Nose? Johnny Roast Beef? PLUS: Sure, Marty loves the classics, but has he seen C.H.U.D.?

Goodfellas
stars Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino, Frank Sivero, Tony Darrow, Mike Starr, Gina Mastrogiacomo, Frank Vincent, Chuck Low, Debi Mazar, Frank DiLeo, Samuel L. Jackson, and Catherine and Charles "Mama & Papa" Scorsese; directed by Martin Scorsese.

Episode 536 - Goodfellas

Comments

Totally! I love NY--always wanted to live there and now I live but an hour away! :) Bring on them references--from the battery to the Verrazzano.

Zora McBride

No offense intended here boys, but saying the LCD soundsystem cover of "jump into the fire" is better than the original is like saying that "a fifth of Beethoven" is better than Beethoven's 5th (if it were performed by Beethoven) 😂

Purple Roundy

I personally would love y’all to do a Talkin’ New York episode for a quintessential NYC movie. I love the references and 2 hours of your Big Apple anecdotes would be very fun. Tell the complainers to go pound sand.

Samuel McGuire

This movie gives me anxiety but I love every minute of it.

Bonnie Le

Henry was a superstar on the stern show

Jan

Lolol! Facts. Also I think Kevin should have gone to jail too, he was kind of a maniac

Bee

Joe Pesci in Home Alone would’ve survived that bullet to the head no problem.

Macca96

Great episode on a great movie! While Goodfellas is an amazing film, I have to say that over the years it has dropped as one of my favorite mob films going down to No. 5. That's behind Donnie Brasco, Casino, State of Grace, and Get Shorty.

P.S. Munson

If not Grandma, two of your big-haired aunts are fighting over the bag to see who gave what.

P.S. Munson

Love this movie so much and this was a great episode. Anyway thought this was worth sharing for some reason... but we definitely watched this in my Catholic high school in our Morality class which yes... was a class 😂

Kelly Burns

Just did a re-watch of Godfather 2 - was blown away to discover Frankie Carbone was also in that during the young Vito scenes.

Jason Reagan

I've always liked Eric, but I refuse to watch this one. Not cool to glamorize crime.

Ryan j Navarro cote

this is one of the great episodes

Tony Garvey

I already love WLM but this was an extra great one.

TK

You brought up some good films when going over Liotta’s filmography, but you forgot the epic (and I use the word loosely) known as Uwe Boll’s “In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale”! I mean it had Burt Reynolds playing the title character of The King!!!

Thomas Rice

Yes please!

Greg Bisley

Guys! Celebrating the filmography of Ray Liotta but boffing on one his finest portrayals, the "I'm being fed my on fleshly carved and sauted brain matter at the end of Hannibal" guy!?! You gentle grampies need your rest.

Jesse White

Please do the Long Kiss Goodnight, it’s ridiculous but SLJ has some of the best lines of his career

Matt Higgs

Great question! I think there are a couple/few key reasons:

SECRETARIATguy

I noticed that actress who played his first mistress died at the age of 39 (of a heard infection). I recognized her the Naked Gun; "Is this some kind of a bust?"

Brian Ralli

So my local Mafia bit was we had just moved and I needed a taillight; there was this tiny storefront auto parts place in the neighborhood and I had the kid in a stroller and went to get a light. Turned out they couldn't take credit cards and i was like, is there an ATM and they were we close in five minutes. The guy behind the counter looked at me and the kid and was like, "Just take it. You can pay us later" and then I noticed like, three dudes just hanging around in the small customer area and a lot more people in the back than I would have expected for a small storefront parts place. I thanked them and made sure I was back tomorrow to pay. IDK if it was organized crime related but it was weird and huge thumbs up for the customer service.

My Grandfather was golfing one day and I dropped him off and picked him up. When I went back for him I saw he was hanging out with Dennis Farina, who I guess o confused with Frank Vincent cause excitedly I told him I loved him in Goodfellas and Get Shorty. He said "uh thanks" and then turned to my Grandfather and told him he had to go. Didn't realize my mistake til much later....at least I got Get Shorty right.

Darryl Bowen

Gonna be honest, I don’t like mafia movies but the guys enthusiasm for this makes me want to give it a rewatch.

Dan sulin

I've always felt that the Irishman's de-aging was a comment on memory. You can never fully remove who you are now from who you were, as if you somehow understood where all those little decisions you were making would lead you. It's another way to normalize the horrible things you do as an indoctrinated member of this group of evil men. "That guy who stole steaks for a local gangster is basically the same guy who murders his closest friend in cold blood." Of course it's never that simple. The look DeNiro gives the camera after Pesci tells him to kill Hoffa is almost accusatory. Like this was inevitable and you should have known all long how it was going to play out. Marty is a genius filmmaker and I feel like these things tend to be choices rather than mistakes. Loved this ep by the way...

Alexander Farr

Oh and Maury plays a Hasidic Jewish man in Sopranos too

Shut It Off

No mention of young Tommy calling him Hendry? Lol List of Sopranos actors: Lorraine Bracco Her mum (also Carmela’s mum - also annoying) Big Pussy Paulie Walnuts Spider Beansie (“you wanna see helicopters?) Billy batts Doc Santoro (is in the young Henry scenes-particularly the court room celebration) Carmine Lupertazzi (Tony Lip) Young Henry’s lawyer is Tony’s Uncle Pat Any others?

Shut It Off

Why didn’t they also kill Jimmy and Henry for Billy Batts? At the very least, they were accessories to his murder.

Paul

Frank Vincent may also have the worst tv death, on The Sopranos (but also one of the funniest)

Robin Fry

As a Brit which, as well as being a resident of one of the few countries on the planet which you can look down disdainfully upon politically and culturally, means I love hearing you gentlemen talk about local New York stuff. Other listeners may grumble but ignore them. I cannot get enough of long arcane tangents about the best and worst cinemas, cool bars, bodega food, the city’s public transportation, and any Steve memories of growing up in the Bronx.

Anthony Simon

God the Sopranos theme song is my shit.

luxmeansbucks

I always thought of Coppola as more of a John Carpenter equivalent. Granted Coppola had way more critical acclaim, but they both had a decade's worth of great cinema and almost immediately lost their edge when the culture in Hollywood changed.

Andrew Burt

Oh, my word. The emoji riff.

Boots Century

BTW, not related to Goodfellas but you guys offhandedly mentioned 3000 Miles from Graceland in a past episode. I watched that movie last night and it is one of the most AGGRESSIVELY terrible movies I have ever seen.

Brian Ralli

Have I been waiting for this one? "Lil bit...lil bit"

Joe Massie

I always thought they were eating eggs at Tommy Mom's house. Maybe because I always put ketchup on my eggs like an crazy person 😳 anyways AMAZING episode guys!!!

Courtney ❤

Nothing like listening to this while waiting in line to get my Covid vaccine.

Paul

The Busta bag concern is not anti-Semitic. As a non Italian, gentile marrying in to an Italian family: I didn’t know what the hell all that was about. I was concerned. According to my husband, if you had any grandmas, they’d be in charge of said bag.

Laura Coleman

As good as a few De Niro's kicks in the stomach.

Sebastien Bourget

Finally! So excited to give this a listen.

Joe Buck Roberts

“Now I gotta turn my back.”

Paul

Discussion of Liotta’s filmography had a glaring omission of Wild Hogs

Mike Miller

Stephen was correct in telling that reality show story about Lorraine Bracco, her sister, Andrew Shue & his wife -- who is Amy Robach from "Good Morning America" on ABC. Not sure if any footage exists on YouTube, but I remember it as well as Stephen.

Cody Downs

At 14 I idolized this movie's characters. I mean I still do at 37, I'm just a lot more self-destructive so doing a shitload of coke and going to jail/witness protection isn't much of a threat anymore.

Michael Daniels

Definitely a good pallet cleanser after listening to the pest episode! Which I admit is a movie I still watch occasionally JUST FOR THE JEEP MUSIC SCENE

Thomas Moreno

Is this not showing up on anyone’s podcast app yet?

Ray Cartagena

Does anyone else get to the prison cooking scene and then wind up ordering $50 worth of pasta and sausage and "sangwiches"?

Matthew Mariner

Do I look like a clown to you?

Frank Grimes

Oh my GOoDfellas..perfect timing!

Sebba Rastelli

Holy cow! This episode is longer than the movie!!! Thanks guys!
