Episode 520 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

On this month's exclusive WLM episode, the gang goes all-in for a supersized episode discussing Peter Jackson's masterful trilogy's first installment, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring! How incredible is Sir Ian McKellen in this film? Did anyone else wanna smoke up along with Gandalf? And geez, Gimli, maybe you should check in with your family a little more, bud? PLUS: Visceral, gut-busting reactions to Hobbit feet!

LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring stars Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Cate Blanchett, Sean Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd; directed by Peter Jackson.

You talking about why kings English is the go to makes me think of Disney's Robinhood. Medieval England with Southern Hillbilly accents.

Patrick Thayer

This and the Two Towers episodes have become my go tos for laughs and comfort. Thank you all!

Lindsey Slanker

I'd read the hobbit book before the films came out and quite enjoyed it but never attempted the LotR books.

Kureigu

I would pay a g to do the next film with you. Sadly I was loser big enough to plow through the Silmarillion.. love this podcast, you guys really get it.

William Kiskowski

Good stuff but yeah, Aragorn was supposed to be a brown guy on top of all the banal racism against the bad guys. Viggo was great, so no complaint on that.. Lean, dark, tall.. two out of three ain't bad.

William Kiskowski

Oh my god what is tha... Ooooogglllgobohloglogooo!

Patreon, more like won't let you pay-treon

Gold

Patreon, more like won't let you pay-treon

The problem is, racism is already inherently in everything. Being someone who's Brown it's completely impossible to remove racism from my life

Patreon, more like won't let you pay-treon

The extended edition was totally available on HBO when they did this ep. So Andrew's gotta clean the shit out of his eyes. Great ep though. Can't wait until Eric is also a grampie.

Patreon, more like won't let you pay-treon

It's actually a pretty common comparison considering when it was written.

Erik- Bo Hanson made some cool prog rock albums including a LOTR themed record. Can't go wrong with ELP either. Thanks as always, top ten episode for sure!

Hard To Gwil

I can confirm as an employee at Crossgates at the time that it was indeed called the Latham Circlejerk Mall.

nkwiw

DId not expect an extended digression on Orlando Bloom's dick!!! Also, I love the way Eric says "grampies." Grampies.

Otelia Finnen

You guys watch this wonderful film and your takeaway is that all the heroes are white, and so the orcs must be black people? Not heard that one before. Kinda fucked up !!

Levendus

enjoyed a lot, chaps but this is still my favourite fellowship review https://youtu.be/YYajv8xsgIk

ROTK when legolas is surfing down an elephant trunk fuck me it was cool when I was 11 but as a 28 year old its eye rolling

Darren

This episode alone was worth my Patreon membership! Way to keep the content quality up after all these years!!

Jason Perez

In terms of ranklin and bass, What Kind of city are we running, dwarves and Bruce Wayne leave nothing.

Life'sBottom

Ow, Non letter, you only live thrice, orr so you seem, one life for yourself, and one for you dream, eval

Life'sBottom

Galadriel‘a hair to Gimli is a huge deal in extended lore

Zach Goldberg

The Balrog was an agent of Morgoth, Sauron’s old boss. The dwarves, as you said, dug too deep. It was awoken from slumber.

Zach Goldberg

Have you all seen the Rankin Bass cartoons for Return of the King and The Hobbit? They're fascinating and weird and great to watch greened out. https://youtu.be/am-piARxy4U

Araña

Also a survivor from the days of fandom on LiveJournal, and, though LotR wasn't my main fandom, news of Figwit spread everywhere.

Shannon White

It’s Gandalf they should be dunking on, not Gimli. He’s the one that knew “What they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum...shadow and flame.” Lol

Cassandra Wladyslava

More Lord of the Rings please! The trailer for this episode made me subscribe. Absolutely hilarious

Zackery Knight

McKenzie is in Return of King I think

Zach Goldberg

6 wizards. White, Grey, red, Brown and two Blue.

Zach Goldberg

LOTR are some of my favorite movies ever, and it was great hearing y'all talk about this one!

Unicorn Trista

The water horses are incarnation of Manwe, god of Water

Zach Goldberg

Thes are the wrong kind of nerds for these movies but they still did a good jorb

5hit5how

I wasn’t aware of Figwit, but I was in the splash zone of the LotR fandom due to using the same fan fiction sites (Transformers for me). And I can confirm that Legolas and Gimli stories were rampant. They were also surprisingly cozy.

Quin Goyer

Yeeeep, I remember Figwit, I was THERE Gandalf! He actually made a reappearance in the third movie when the elves were leaving middle earth, and FIgwit fandom was hella excited for another cameo (ALSO he has a trading card!)

Schaudwen

Just a theory... but what if Shep Proudfoot, the mechanic in Fargo (Previous Episode) who helps Jerry find the kidnappers - is a relative of the Proudfoot Hobbit clan? I mean the back to back WHM episodes confirms it for me.

Deano Rezzz

Can we assume you'll be doing the rest of the trilogy AND The Hobbit trilogy? This was fantastic!

Nena Aguilar

I rely almost exclusively on streaming services and podcasts for my entertainment, and have to give you all congrats on consistently being the best value for money.

Lynne Olson

Kevin Lynch

Have y’all seen the episode of Extras with Ian McKellen? His bit talking about Gandalf/acting was my introduction to that show. Lol.

Cassandra Wladyslava

I've been excited for this episode since I saw the program for this month and I was not disappointed. God tier programming by the way. These movies are an achievement. There are so many ways this could have been a disaster but everything from the tone to the art direction is perfect. This movie also brings me to tears at the end when Sam gets pulled out of the water after almost drowning and tells Frodo he's not going to let him go alone because he made a promise to Gandalf. Can't wait for the next two.

Alexander Farr

So happy my fave podcast is covering my fave film!! This was an instant classic episode, the reactions to the hobbits nearly had me in tears laughing! The guys enthusiasm for it made me want to rewatch as soon as I'd finished! cannot wait for WHM to cover the other two (and maybe the hobbit films on the main feed bc they're genuinely terrible and deserve much ridicule)

Hermione

World-class simulated vomiting, all around.

Bob Dobbs

Way to make a Dancin Tony ref Stephan

Austin Kunis

Eric should check out Gong, if he’s still looking out for prog rock recs.

Bethany C

Wait... According to Letterboxd there's ANOTHER Christopher Robin from the previous year ("Goodbye Christopher Robin") and in that one Domhnall Gleeson actually plays A. A. Milne and this one indeed looks like the Tolkien one

Felipe Sobreiro

Hey Andrew, the Christopher Robin movie ain't no masterpiece but it's pretty cute and it's NOT like the Tolkien movie...

Felipe Sobreiro

Haven’t finished the episode yet so forgive me if one of the guys comes up with this. Third LEGolas.

Slappy White

Any episode that features Steve doing his Bronx Scumbag voice is a top tier episode for me.

fastandsloppy

There IS a ton of Hobbit sex happening in the 1 hour a day after they’ve recovered from their hangovers and before they’ve started to drink and smoke again. It’s usually around 3pm. The entire Shire shuts down.

Slappy White

Also a post script: my children call my dad “Grampy”.

Michael

Here is my LOTR story. My best mate’s brother worked on all of the films making trees. My mate and I were 19 back then. Not ready for uni. Bumming around. The brother told a bum could earn $160 a day being an extra for Pete’s flicks. I am six foot and change and my mate is a generous five foot seven. I was happy to be anything. I was happy to have cash. Presumingly due to my height and Hollywood good looks (...) I was a Gondor archer an elf archer, and I’m in the field where all the baddies kill the villages in one of the opening shots of fellowship. Although it’s difficult to see me. My short ass mate wanted to be a dwarf. He was made an orc. Assuming rather than pay the art department to make loads of dead orcs in one of the raid battles, sir pete just paid my mate and about 15 other shorties to just lie in a pile for 10 hours. He said it stank of short chubby men. I got to pretend to fire an arrow. Thanks Pete.

No

We Hate Movies

While I love the trilogy, Fellowship is WITHOUT QUESTION the best of the 3. In Two Towers and ROTK Jackson and Co. start going crazy with their alterations, turning certain characters into idiotic dickheads (Denethor) or using massive Deus Ex Machina (the Army of the Dead). I won't even go into taking Legolas from a cool badass but no more so than Gimli and Aragorn, to a fucking spider-monkey surfing on shields and shit.

Flex

Grampys. Perfection.

AllegedBeef

WHM will never tell you “Secrets and Lies”. They don’t even know that film.

Paul

Three hours! I apologize for being inpatient but not for all the farting.

Bob Dobbs

Good gravy, stop saying "Sore-on"!

Marty TC (child-sized Cardassian)

Watching this film at the wee age of six in theater blew my fucking mind.

Matt Lambert

That entire bit about Boromir seeing hobbits for the first time was flawless. Had me laughing to tears.

Maxwell Wrann

Folks should check out Lindsay Ellis’ YouTube series on what happened behind the scenes with the Hobbit. It’s fascinating, insightful, and very funny. She gets into what happened with GDT, how the films changed NZ labour laws, all sorts of crazy shit. https://youtu.be/uTRUQ-RKfUs

Flex

For the record Bill the pony makes it home in the books

Paddy O'Rourke

Puking boramyir is the best

Beer City Media

I feel the need to clarify that it’s something written in Elvish and not like Gollum peaking out from my ass crack or something

Kelly Burns

I am 100% Lord of the Rings trash... I even have a LotR tramp stamp I got in college 😭 So yes... I was a certified Figwit person. They brought him back for The Hobbit too.

Kelly Burns

I’m at work right now. This will get be halfway to quitting time . Thanks

Andrea Russell

I had the same question about the use of "October", turns out it's Tolkien being like "well I translated this from suchandsuch language and what they said translates to October"

Vicky I

49 min in and I can tell this is a top ten episode. So good!!!!

Beer City Media

This is my favorite trilogy. These movies came out during my freshman thru junior years in high school. I saw all three opening night, and they made a massive impact on me. It's not possible to express how happy I was when I saw this announced. It easily makes Patreon and everything y'all do for us worth it. I can't wait for the Return of the King episode... what, in another two decades?

Dominic Kovell

AND MY AXE

Ethan Barbee

Yes! Just need work to end!

Will Johnson

Thank you, Guys! You’ve made my Thursday!

Raeven Rose

This is what makes life as a mail man easier ...also I love you guys but do you need to bring racism into everything. We know racism is stupid

Darren

Awesome. Starting it now.

Bill Williams

Cannot wait for this after work! Hopefully you’ll the rest of series soon!
