Episode 495 - Raiders of the Lost Ark

On this month's exclusive We Love Movies episode, the gang gets together (virtually) to chat about one of their all-time faves, Raiders of the Lost Ark! Why couldn't they get a better Alfred Molina dummy? Did Lucas slide in a jab at William Hootkins with that character name? How bad-ass is Marion Ravenwood? And how come there aren't any .gifs of Dietrich's head exploding? PLUS: Mulder and Scully, but they're nazi paranormal investigators!

Raiders x Seinfeld is an idea whose time has come.

The reason I always figured they set Temple as a prequel was because by the end of Raiders Indy had changed. He now knows that not everything is "Mumbo Jumbo" and is with the girl he was always meant to be with. Serials deal with static characters, if Indy grows with every movie it diminishes the serial feel that it works so hard to master. 😁 just a thought I've always had!

Temple of Doom is pretty problematic, but its so unique, truly worth a re-evaluation. It has many issues, but the Cinematography, the tone, the colors, the action sequences... Its definitely the black sheep of the franchise but its so entertaining, badass, and funny. So many great moments sprinkled throughout!

Off topic, but please continue Melro210 after your break. When you do your podcast, why not include Donna?

Gregory Hughes

Fantastic ep on a fantastic movie. I actually grew up watching, and becoming the most familiar with, "Temple of Doom" as a kid, but I have to concede it does get a little problematic. Hopefully you all can do an episode of it someday!

Correction...still engaged

My aunt is married to the guy who played the version of the guy who gets chopped up in the propeller from the live stunt show

The last crusade is actually my favorite even though I agree raiders is the overall better crafted film. It's also rare to find movies that resonate both as an adult and a child. This is the film series I'm most looking forward to sharing with my kids one day. In my mind the poor quality of Indy4 doesn't rub off on the original trilogy quite like Rise of Skywalker did to Star Wars.

Alexander Farr

Harrison and Terrence Ford? Harry and Terry Ford?! Where is that buddy comedy?

Patrick C Brenner

I remember watching these movies on my mom's vhs collection as a kid. Love all 3 Indy movies! Keep up the great work fellas.

Matt Lambert

I saw this in 1981 on one of my very first trips to the cinema. As a 7 year old I loved it, particularly the ark ghosts and the melting Nazis. Was sad when the monkey bought it until when I was older and realised it was a Nazi sympathiser who got what was coming to it. Harrison Ford was not the first choice for Indiana Jones. Klaus Kinski was offered the role of Todt in Raiders and turned it down. Somehow I conflated these two pieces of information and for years thought Klaus Kinski had been considered as Indiana Jones.

Patreon podcast synergy this week. You guys talking about Raiders while Podcast: The Ride’s Patreon episode this week was about Ivan Ooze. A lot of Paul Freeman love going around this week

Dan sulin

Nobody laughed at it, but I enjoyed Eric's 480 poo joke.

Andrew Burt

i know it's all over, but would The Warriors have been fitting for a side order of sleaze?

regularspecial1 .

I have not!

We Hate Movies

Hey Eric, have you seen “A Private War”? Rosamund Pike plays Marie Colvin, who is a good representation of an eye-patch person. I haven’t seen it, but just saying—Rosamund Pike wearing an eye-patch.

Paul

Aw bless 🥰

Maggie0401

I’m so happy! This will make work a lot better for at least 2 hours. Thanks

Andrea Russell

Apparently the reason Temple of Doom was a prequel was because they didn’t want Indiana to cheat on Marion.

Justin Robinson

"Hand me the idol, ya old bag!" Already a classic episode.

Amazing timing. I just re-watched this about a month ago.

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

We need the XL Files!

AngularBanjo

Just made my work day a million times better

Garrett Dryden

In my opinion, the most watchable film of all time. Anytime its on, im down for it.

Jonathan
