Episode 488 - No Country for Old Men

On this month's We Love Movies entry, the gang is chatting about the Coen Brothers masterpiece, No Country for Old Men! How perfect is all the silence in this movie? Who asks to see a motel's room layout like it's a restaurant menu? And how incredible is Bardem here? PLUS: Dad road rage stories!

No Country for Old Men stars Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, and Garret Dillahunt; directed by Joel & Ethan Coen.

Thank you so much for continuing to support our We Love Movies endeavor! We could not do this without you and we really love getting to entertain you each and every week here at WHM!

Ed Tom Bell is not a boomer. He would have been born in the 20s or 30s.

I am so happy that you guys did this movie. I loved this movie. I saw it with a group of my friends and one of my friends was somebody who was like a little brother to me, and we saw movies together all the time. Like once or twice a week we go to the movies. And he did not like this movie. I loved it! And this is the movie I realized that I couldn’t trust his judgment in movies. Like if he liked the movie, I probably wouldn’t and if he didn’t like it, I probably love it, and that actually came true.so this movie is amazing and when people don’t like this movie, I do not trust their judgment

They literally say in the first 20 min, the movie is pretty much a perfect adaptation of the book. Cabin talks about how he read it before the movie......

The most frustrating part of this great ep is the complete lack of credit to Cormac McCarthy. The text is almost scene for scene and word for word on the screen. He came up with all the shit that makes this movie great. The Cohens deserve praise for not fucking with it and presenting the story faithfully but not for the creation of any of it.

One of the things I love about the Cohen Brothers is the incredible sense of place they have in their films (I guess Miller's Crossing would be an exception) Terrell County (where Jones is sheriff) had a population of 897 in 2019, a whole lot of land and not a lot of people and no border crossings, so it's about the best place for cartels to have their meet ups. Del Rio, Texas was in the news earlier this year actually when the Haitian refugees were trying to make their way into America (the bridge they were camped under would have been the same bridge in the movie)

John Harrison

There was a little Bill Nighy in there too!

Bob Goodrich

My favorite moment during The Coin Scene is when Chiguhr says “don’t put that away, or it’ll become just another coin. Which it is.” And then he gives this look that is one hundred percent “did I just blow your mind, man” and I laugh every single time.

Bob Goodrich

I know you mean Tommy Lee Jones but now I can't help thinking of him as The Last Jedi. So now that's in my head.

Anyone else having problems getting this episode on Apple Podcasts? I am still subscribed to the patreon feed from what I can tell.

I do think for all the bleakness in the movie, people forget just how funny it is. That smash cut to Chigurh looking at the hotel map, "the kind with the most poles," and TLJ's deadpan reaction to "we gotta circulate this," to seeing a still cold milk pitcher or Chigurh reacting to the dead dog. They just have such a great grasp of timing and editing to sell a joke.

Texture of the peanut bag.

The eagle hotel always reminded me of the hotel from mcqueens getaway. Even some of the action scene's pacing is reminiscent of that movie. Getaway would be a great WLM.

J HEASLEY

Yes! One of my favorite movies!

Truly, as much as I have loved (and still love) WHM for 9 years, WLM has really stolen a piece of my heart. There’s not been one episode that hasn’t led to me re-watching a movie already in my library, within 24 hours. WLM wish list (??): - There Will Be Blood (seems on the docket) - Silence of the Lambs - Michael Clayton (again, possibly a Steve Select™️) - Dark Knight - Se7en (Finchin’ Out?) - Trainspotting - Big Lebowski - Gangs of NY (newly-discovered by Jupin) - American Psycho - Fargo - Fight Club (Finchin’) I’m 100% behind Finchin’ Out! Maybe for the November theme month???? Keep it up, guys - your work is absolutely appreciated! :)

There are so many ways we can praise this movie but I think it’s perfect for those of us who work in retail or customer service. One can learn from gas station guy,, don’t initiate conversation only respond. A lot of customers don’t want to talk and do not want you prying into their business. I was pretty impressed with how trailer park lady politely held her ground. I’ve had to deal with an occasional Anton Chigurh but on the whole they are just trying to nick stuff rather than murder. It’s a testament to Javier Bardem’s performance that his accent is so inscrutable and unplaceable. When you tried to impersonate you all veered delightfully between Arnold and Max Von Sydow.

Anthony Simon

my dad's dad used to say he got things from the gettin' place - it meant "mind your own goddamn business"

Jack

Fuck YES

Rafael Sarmento
