Episode 484 - The Ring (2002)

On this month's exclusive WLM offering, the gang is going back to the film that started the J-horror remake craze in Hollywood, The Ring! Capitalizing on the Verbinski Mania that's been sweeping the show, the guys chat about how eerie and effectively scary the film remains after 18 years, what other films Martin Henderson may have appeared in, and why it's so important to never borrow a VHS tape someone left behind in their seedy motel cabin! PLUS: How dare Disney+ offer up America's Funniest Home Videos and only to start with the thirteenth season of Tom Bergeron's reign?!

The Ring stars Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox, Jane Alexander, Amber Tamblyn, Rachael Bella, and Daveigh Chase; directed by Gore Verbinksi.

Thank you so much for continuing to support our We Love Movies endeavor! We could not do this without you and we really love getting to entertain you each and every week here at WHM!

Fcked up movie, love it

Jan

Awesome!!

Chris

you're out of your mind, that scene made me shit my pants!

RaggyB

Yes please do a Lynch episode!

Eric Dietz

Enjoyed this movie until the girl came out of the TV. It jumped the shark at that point.

SECRETARIATguy

Thing about making the Ring now, no one answers their phones. Samara would be like “shit, no I do not want to leave a message!”

Amy Eales

I joined patreon for this episode. It's funny one of you guys mentioned Samara versus someone. Anyways, there is a Japanese version called Sadako vs Kayako which is the ring chick versus the grudge chick. If you ever want to do J-Horror. Do that movie, please.

Melissa

Any Lynch. Doesn't matter. Blue Velvet I think would be interesting, or an introspection on the entire Twin Peaks, but that is many, many hours of discussion.

Dakotah Salazar

Logged onto Patreon to say YES please do Lost Highway/Lynch in general!!!

Liz

In response to the Q about reviewing some of the Lynch oeuvre - I say go for it! I tend to trust you all to know what's good material for the program, so if you're feeling it, have at.

Andy

I’ve been loving this series on Pirates/Gore Verbinski. Even though I’m not a Bruckheimer fan, I have soft spot for the first Pirates. I was 10 or 11 when it came out, and have been on the ride many times, so that probably adds to it. I think that film was for me what Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was for Szyszka. But I never really liked Pirates 2 or 3 and didn’t bother to watch 4 or 5. So, yeah these episodes haven’t disappointed yet. Can’t wait for the next one. Also, yes to a Lynch film for We Love Movies.

Blake Ferronetti

been dying at the $8 level every month since it was invented and joining the chorus of please help us cope with Lynch's existence, the existence of bugs in the deep grass, and all the rest of existence humoursly <3

Clifton Jewett

not sure if holding Andrew hostage to watch Lynch's Dune would be hotter than that bondage porn of making Steve watch Commando the first time or not...

Clifton Jewett

Fun fact: Gore Verbinski directed Bad Religion's music video for 21st centuary digital boy, where a creepy kid watches white noise on his tube tv and then the band comes out of the tv playing the song. Might be why he got the movie. Also, the videographer ex has a bad religion sticker in his camera gear locker

Randy Record

Coming out of the woodwork solely to say, yes, please do a David Lynch movie.

Stefan Kienzle

Sweet ref

Andrew Bowers

Yes make lynch things

Brandon Gorin

I would like heard you talk about some Lynch on WLM

Veronica Forker

Yes yes and yes to WHM on Lynch. Anything Lynch. "Elephant Man", "Blue Velvet" can't miss.

Kerri Mellick IC#5695

Would LOVE it if you did a Lynch movie!

Robin Fry

Yes to something Lynch!!

Lynette Michelle

In the extended version, the mother actually pulls a loose brick and hits Samara in the head while the bag is over her head, then she throws her in the well. Surprised they didn’t mention it lol

Jeremie Lavigne

I would Not be turned off by a "Lost Highway" commentary.

Beatrix

Honk honk plot hole. They say she killed the horses because they were loud when she was trying to sleep, but than they say she never slept.

Ryan j Navarro cote

That shit is catnip for dads

Catboyslim

Video store in Atlanta? Was it Videodrome?

Catboyslim

Sailor, you’re just crazy and wild at heart!

Catboyslim

I think the Pulse remake is too boring and mediocre for a Stay Tuned, but there's a single jump-scare with a gross "pulsed" cat that is memorable to me.

Eric Rational

Yesss! Just rewatched this and the sequel a few weeks ago. I still have no idea what the point of the second one was. Ringu still awesome tho

Michael Beatty

I'm up for a "Lost Highway"

Anh-Tu

O M GAHHHHH NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN thats gonna kick ass

Dash Coom

Andrew: FYI, as you were curious on the episode, Rick Baker retired after 2014's "Maleficent". He released his tell-all memoir in Oct. 2019.

Cody Downs

Totally down for any Lynch movies y'all throw up on this feed.

Anthony Trevino

I enjoyed Sadako v. Kayako well enough to watch it again some time later. Though it's not a parody film, it does play out quite similalyr to Freddy vs. Jason if you're looking at the broad narrative strokes. It's basically two parallel stories, one Ring and one Ju-On. For the first two acts they don't have a whole lot to do with each other. Then, in the third act, they decide to try and pit the two curses against each other to cancel them out (shrug). Conceptually it's bonkers, but I enjoy both series and they do the best they can with the whole "vs." angle. Come for the J-horror, stay for the rockstar exorcist and his preternatural young ward. Comes out of nowhere and ushers in the full-tilt crazy tonal shift into the "vs.". Feels like something out of a Shaw Bros movie.

Robert Ballard

As a PNW dweller, you are grossly underestimating how insane people have been/are about ignoring safe building codes. Its kinda nuts. At this point, I wouldn't even shrug my shoulders at learning someone built a house over a well.

Chris Walton

joy ride RULES and should be a whm ep for sure

Dash Coom

Hell mother fuckin yea a longer episode

regularspecial1 .

would LOVE to hear yall goof on a lynch movie for WLM!

Dash Coom

I didn't really like sadako vs. kayako. I'm not a big watcher of Japanese horror but i thought it was mostly boring

Chris Robinson

Wings the TV show was me cutting school to sleep in and start smoking weed at 10am

Thicc Nolte

Wings was a series of documentaries. My dad used to pass out drunk on the couch while watching it. I remember several episodes. It’s fun if you’re interested in plane/war history.

Thicc Nolte

Just gonna make a hard request for Wild At Heart. Cage. Dern. Dafoe. Elvis. How could you resist. Please.

Jamie Brittain

Yeah man The Elephant man is the way to go. Especially since Mel Brooks won the Oscar for producing. Also my ex roommate has a kid named Aden and hes fucking weird as hell. He had a real shitty mustache and resembles the dad from the Creaplys from the Flintstones.

Joe Martinez

Do Dune! Dune! Dune! Dune! Dune!

Paul

The Ring came out when I was in high school, and a girl in one of my classes had seen it and was talking about it. She said "It's called The Ring, because a phone rings before you die." I will never forget this

Unicorn Trista

I'm up for ALL the Lynch.

Ellen Aim

Oh, and my vote for a WLM Lynch episode would be THE ELEPHANT MAN

Felipe Sobreiro

I think Dune is a regular WHM (even if they end up liking it)

Felipe Sobreiro

i feel like this years WHM Halloween should be Lynch on the patreon and american remakes of japanese horror movies on the regular feed

G Goldhar

Do "Blue Velvet" as a WLM entry in 2021 to commemorate its 35th anniversary!

Cody Downs

Yes, I did & it ranks as one of the most boring films in recent years, I found Dane Dehaan's character to be SO unengaging.

Cody Downs

Anything Lynch!!

Jonathon pfortmiller

Anything Lynch would be a ton of fun! Mulholland Drive is a dang masterpiece.

Hadley Turner

Would love to listen to you guys do Lost Highway.

allegedlycool

Hey tho, what about Dune?

Jacob Hill

100% into a WLM episode on a David Lynch film

Nathan Stables

Anyone else watch that Cure for Wellness movie Verbinski directed a few years back?

Matt Lambert

I'm forging ahead with Pirate-mania, this is a good interlude. Man, you guys couldn't be more wrong about that Pirates Disney World ride though. Hands down, my favorite ride in the park. You get in there after a day at the park, it's dark, it's nice and cool, the puppets are baller, the boat is small so you're probably just with a friend, you just sit back and let the ride tell you a pirate story. Maybe you've eaten a tall glass of water some time during the day....ah it's just the best. I probably hit that ride half a dozen times every time I go to DW

Smaug

Eh heh heh.
