Episode 479 - The Thing

On this month's exclusive We Love Movies episode, the gang gets into some deep isolation with a lively chat about the John Carpenter classic, The Thing! How rad is Kurt Russell's hat? How much did The X-Files pay tribute/rip off this movie? And how in the world do you let Wilford Brimley go mustache-less throughout this film? PLUS: Mac and team accidentally watch the tape from The Ring!

The Thing
stars Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donal Moffat, Joel Polis, Thomas G. Waites, and Jed the Dog; directed by John Carpenter.

Thank you so much for continuing to support our We Love Movies endeavor! We could not do this without you and we really love getting to entertain you each and every week here at WHM!

That PS2 video game is actually amazing. And they just remastered it.

Ray

One of my all-time favorite episodes. Italians are from outer space. Aqueducts? I don't think so, Scully!

KRA

YES! Have you actually seen Jeremiah Johnson? I've never come across anyone anywhere near my age that has ever seen that film. If you haven't, see it.

SECRETARIATguy

HARD agree on this one haha

Gertie

The Norwegian said, " Get the hell away from that thing. That's not a dog. It's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog. It isn't real! GET AWAY, YOU IDIOTS!! "

Eren Keskin

Kurt Russell's beard is another character in the film. This and Redford's in Jeremiah Johnson get my vote for greatest movie beards of all-time.

SECRETARIATguy

Just watched The Hateful Eight on the back of this. It's a marathon that you have to set aside the whole evening for. It's GOTTA be an episode, right? ?

Maggie0401

If I can just gush like a stomach maw in a John Carpenter film, the thing is the god damn best

regularspecial1 .

I've been listening since The Pack, and somewhere very early on you made a joke about We Love Movies and I actually looked for the podcast back than. Funny that it actually exists now.

The reason they might have a flamethrower is its a good tool when you need to melt some snow

Apple

Definitely a favorite movie, and a great review. Like how you captured the negativity of the movie initially, because is almost the definition of a movie that holds up well after its release.

Ray Kothlow

I love you, I do. But feel like ther is sweet spot of like and love, and too much love is not as good an episode. I blame Cabin and Erik

Elliott Tipton

Guys that was a great episode. BTW, when are you going to bring back Russell Rules

Stephen Leppert

Artic bases actually do all have flamethrowers on hand. They use them for de-icing and destroying trash.

The Wheel

Favorite horror movie ever

Beer City Media

Haha his name is Tony Brimley? Wilfred is way more fitting.

Will See

I've never seen this movie and I think I always assumed it wouldn't be my jam, but I'm definitely going to seek it out after this episode.

Erin Hardy

All this time I thought it was WilFRED Brimley. Shit.

Andy Ward

Excellent movie! I rewatched it about six months ago and remember thinking how much Richard Masur looked like Chris Cabin. Maybe that’s just me though.

Robin Fry

I never wanna add a correction but I’m going to jump on yours...pretty sure it is pronounced Rob Beau-teen, not Bottin, which it of course looks like. I only feel compelled to write this as I said bottin for years!!!

Ed Dougherty

Fellow listeners... the DVD commentary with Kurt Russell and John Carpenter is a lot of fun to listen to if you haven’t. They’re having a great time during it.

Christina Z (StevieWayne16)

Great episode! That Stevie Wonder bit also reminds me, ever since you guys ranted about terrible Beatles covers and questioned if there was a good one, I wanted to say Stevie Wonder’s cover of We Can Work It Out might be one of the best covers, and debatably better than the original (and I’m a massive Beatles fan).

Blake Ferronetti

Easily my favourite of this year. Thank you for doing this incredible move justice and for putting this in quarantine context.

Frederick Cowell

When Eric almost didn't put his final thoughts on "The Thing" at the very end, I almost had a heart attack! Thankfully Cabin saved the day. Wonderful episode! A very favorite and revered film. Happy to be a part of the WHM Patreon!

Beatrix

My favourite movie ❤️

Dangmo

Jesus christ guys...I had no idea about milo and Otis until you brought it up in this podcast. Thanks for ruining my childhood.

Venicebitch

I never got down with the names, always confused. Thank you for a great commentary of I film I love.

James Bates

2* Jump scares, Gary’s demise is definitely one as well

THertzel

You guys stop me from killing myself lol.

Brian Ajax Wintor

Ok I guess i was wrong about Elliot Gould. But i was right about PeeWee.

Christina Z (StevieWayne16)

Please do Flight of the Navigator! It's PeeWee Herman and Elliot Gould who do the ship voices. And i had my 8 year old watch Explorers two weeks ago and she loved it.

Christina Z (StevieWayne16)

Scream!!! Ahhh! So excited.

Christina Z (StevieWayne16)

No. Screw bad CGI. Great CGI is not noticeable. Like how 90% of Mad Max Fury Road is CGI but people don’t notice it.

YaBoyStevieJay

Re: The special effects around Blair losing his arms in the chest cavity of Norris - I saw somewhere that they used an amputee as a body double for Blair in that shot. Again, very inventive. Screw CGI.

Maggie0401

I think they may have used some of the same sound effects from the original. Shrieking etc . Can't confirm for sure, but it would have been a nice touch, if so.

Maggie0401

Correction, fellas: Richard Masur plays Anna Chlumsky's uncle in "My Girl" & "My Girl 2"; Dan Aykroyd is her father in both films. Also, Ennio Morricone DID WIN the Oscar for Best Original Score for "The Hateful 8" at the 83rd Oscars in 2016.

Cody Downs

Oooooh so excited for this one. This is, hands down, my favorite science fiction movie of all time. Recently got the steel box bluray edition. It looks FANTASTIC! Go get em fellas!

Jarod

one of my favorite episodes because I am a major Fan Girl of The Thing... glad to hear it get love from people I admire :)

Christina A

Once again, thanks for that new episode. As many other patrons, I can't wait until the end of my shift to listen to it. Cheers guys!

Sebastien Bourget

Looking forward to this one. An awesome film and the Brimley impressions are always a highlight gawd dammut

Wayne McNally

Can't wait to listen! One of my all time favorite horror movies.

Tweet Joe Self

Also is this the best horror/thriller ever made? I think so.

Jonathan

Yall should do a special (shorter mby?) ep on the original 50s thing. Its got some fun moments and i think it would make for a interesting compare/contrast from yall.

Jonathan

Clasic movie, classic podcast

Frank Grimes

Holy shit. Cannot wait to listen to this gem. Favorite movie favorite podcast! What could go wrong ? Lol
