Episode 377 - Ready Player One

On this month's patrons-only full-length episode, the gang is chatting about the outrageously pointless, Steven Spielrock-directed, pop culture orgy, Ready Player One! Why is an entire society obsessed with this weird, old man's life? Why didn't this dumb kid use the hover conversion more to his advantage? And could a film dump on The Shining any worse than this dumb sequence? PLUS: Steve reads some... "poetry"!

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance; directed by Steven Spielberg.

Listening at work... Eric doing Trump at the Wailing Wall... coffee out of my nose! 🤣🤣🤣

Joseph Xavier

Is this a poem?

Jake

That poem sounds like an incel manifesto or those guys who pretend to be "allies".

Matthew Lloyd

I'm the sociopath who'd be the noid, I fucking hate dominos and would spend my waking hours shooting down their drones IRL and virtually

Apple

Same

Mark Zebro, Jr.

Oh God no Cline's porn 'poem', oh god, oh god, the creepiest, most pathetic thing ever. I've not cringed so hard in my life

Oma Keeling

This episode won’t work for me for some reason :/

Seth Loveland

BAZINGA

jose salazar

Is this movie dumb? yes it is. But i enjoyed the hell out of it.

Joleary

My tipping point was early on. “That’s the bike from Akira!”, ya I know that motherfucker, but if I didn’t know I wouldn’t care! Hahah. It feels like a contradiction of itself the whole time.

Dangmo

I'm glad Im not the only one

Steven Avalos

I agree with Eric. Scott Pilgram is a fuckin shitty movie.

Wesley Hall

I was expecting to love this movie. It was awful :(

likeshine

Merlin Manson is the greatest thing EVER! Eric is the best human being on the planet!

Ryan j Navarro cote

I have a suspicion that Cline and the screenwriter haven't kept up with gaming since the good ol days.

John Harrison

I seriously don't understand how Armada made it to publication. Does name-checking what you're ripping off somehow protect you from IP theft claims?

Jen D

The most unbelievable part, from a gaming perspective, is that no one discovered the whole drive backwards for a secret passage thing by just fucking around.

Noni Mouse

Great episode. And if you ever need further proof of what an awful hack Ernest Cline is, try reading his second book Armada. He does nothing there but pop culture references while plagiarizing the plot of The Last Starfighter.

Kemper

omg “If you can tell me the name of Luke Skywalker’s home planet” idk whether to laugh or be insulted I’m a woman who literally runs a chat room for Star Wars fans and this is the most insulting question I think I’ve never been asked

Victoria

You guys started so strong on Patreon when you knew we were here for Birdo, whether it was Animation Damnation or The Nexus. Nowhere in this ep do we hear analysis about why this movie failed without Nintendo because Cline's Birdo poems couldn't be brought to life. Unsubscribed. (end of sarcasm) <3

Clifton Jewett

There's something about being nostalgic for your parents' nostalgia. It has an actual name I think.

John Harrison

Ok fine

Dan Eden

Dan Eden

I thought you only did bad mov.......oh

Cody Stovall

My kid loves this movie, so I think the key is that if you don't remember the 80s, this movie is far less frustrating to you. See also, 80s kids obsessed with Grease.

Meridith Morrissey

I feel like there needs to be a t-shirt for “It’s okay to like a movie,” with an image of Eric giving a shrug or something of that nature.

Blake Ferronetti

I also really love 100 years of American cinema summed up in a sentence: "I'm a white guy, and I know where to go!"

Jamie Brittain

Oh man, 'the poem'.

Jamie Brittain

If Black Phillip was on the race, you know he'd be driving Dragula, right?

Felipe Sobreiro

Oh my God, yes

Dead Meat

Is this a poem?

Charles W

If Ready Player One was a person, it would be Augustus St.Cloud from Venture Bros

Matt Eldritch

Oh my god YES! So excited to hear your thoughts on this! I enjoyed it - thought it was a fun ride.

Glen Gracia

I enjoyed the movie but it still realy dumb and love to heat u guys tear it up

Pedro Elizondo Jr

My reaction to this movie was different, to say the least. I watched the movie first, hated it. Read the book, loathed it, went back to the movie again and liked it a little more. The book fleshes the world more, but nobody is likeable, if anything, the movie salvages the interesting parts of the book and makes the main character tolerable by making him a blank slate. There is nothing good about this IP, but the movie is better than the book, personally. I know it's okay to like a movie (I kind of like this movie), and I totally respect the guys feelings about it. Glad I joined the Patreon!

This movie is bad, no its worse than bad. Its gross, exploitation and both the book and movle fail to reach the actual point: nostalgia is killing us. A continual look backwards is actively preventing our progression forwards into a better life. Trump got elected based on "make america great again" which is harrowing for anyone who realizes that america was never terribly great, and only worse in the past. That fact was brought into stark relief when the only thing Hillary could put up opposite it was "America is already great" , for real? The book at least does a bit of social commentary, the world is obviously a capitalist hellscape where there is no good, but still kinda shrugs its shoulders at it and says "well at least you can go to school and learn cool 80s stuff and play in vr cyberworld!". The discussion about Big Bang Theory is a great place to go, it has a lot in common with RPO. Its a weird mix of fingerpointing "laugh at the nerds!!! hahahhaha nerds, playing DnD..nerds!" and "wow remember the flash? Look! its neil degrasse tyson! wow! Brent Spiner he was Data on the Star Trek!".

Dave K

...friend of the show, Steven Spielberg....😛
