The Nexus 13 - "The Menagerie / Datalore"

This month, as we take a quick dip into the Nexus, we're covering two very different episodes of Star Trek —

First up on TOS, it's the (sort of) lazy two-parter, "The Menagerie". Originally airing November 17th and November 24th, 1966, this two part thriller features no less than five characters watching an older episode of Star Trek...on an episode of Star Trek! Did everyone hear Kirk talk down to Bones about that whole "not smart enough to commandeer the ship" comment? Why is going near this planet punishable by death? And who on Earth thought this black wheelchair coffin looked cool?

Then over on TNG, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary by the way, we're talking about the episode that features Data's brother, Lore's first appearance, "Datalore." It is legitimately impressive to see Brent Spiner play two distinctly different characters, but what's with that terrible puppet head they start with? Is Data really holding the souls of 100 long-dead settlers? Why is everyone so uncomfortable talking about robot issues in front of Data? And where the hell does Lore get beamed to?

PLUS: Should we do a Patreon-exclusive episode on Trekkies?

The Nexus is a We Hate Movies podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time; cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

They want Wesley to STFU BECAUSE they already know its Lore! Lore does several things early on when he’s allegedly Data such as calling Riker by his name!

Kahless

Poor Wesley.

Ajax

I’ll be over here taking a Brent Break until you do the Trekkies-mentary

Jan Moffett

I've never heard a fart joke on The Orville.

Richard Snay

Yes! Do the Trekkies commentary. Now. Right now.

Damon LeCornu

They basically remade "The Menagerie" on episode 2 of the Seth MacFarlane parody "The Orville." For a supposed comedy, I felt that there were very few jokes in the series. Half of the jokes were really ham-handed though. One a Scale of one to a "Million Ways to Die in the West" I think it scores about a 999,995. I really thought the show was easier to watch than I expected. I suspect that perhaps the actors don't really want to be in a McFarlane Fart Comedy and they secretly just want to dress up and play Star Trek

Patrick Hothersall

I hear Will Wheaton really hates it when you tell him, "Shut Up Wesley!"

Patrick Hothersall

Commodore Mendez's first name is Jose. Is he the guy Kirk was telling that he'd deliver his chili peppers to in that earlier episode?

Kemper

Shut up, Wesley! Great episode! Ya'll need to check out Screen Junkies' latest HONEST TRAILER on TNG. It's very funny!

Tweet Joe Self

should do an episode on Trekkies. I'd love it.

David Billington

I'd love to hear a Trekkies Nexus episode.

Brian Moore

Seconded on the Trekkies- I'd love to have a commentary or episode on that!

Ryan Barker

Steve is right, the woman that plays Number One in The Cage is Majel Barrett, Big Rod’s wife. She’s Nurse Chapel, the voice of the ship’s computer and, years later, Deanna Troi’s mother

Felipe Sobreiro

Love the episode! Next time we see Lore he mentions basically floating in space for years. And the Crystalline Entity does come back once. You might get to this by 2028 😉

Ian Tepoot

Please do something with Trekkies! I want to hear your theories about the guy who just sends random brochures addressed to "Star Trek."
