Animation Damnation - Dragon Ball Z

On this edition of Animation Damnation, the guys are out of their element as they attempt to make sense of an "off-week" episode of the beloved anime series, Dragon Ball Z! The episode in question—"Goku's Ordeal"— originally airead on September 13th, 2000 and features a dull plot where Goku & his green buddy, Piccolo, have to take their driving tests because Goku's wife, Chi-Chi, is tired of being taken advantage of. Also: dog people!

It's funny trying to get this from a filler episode. Problem with most anime is unless you watch the whole story arc you never follow it and the random filler episodes between story episodes don't help lol

Kureigu

Late to the party, but i've been loving listening to you guys try and work out both Pokemon and DBZ. Worth noting that I feel the suggestions have sold you down the river with some of the more insane episodes. Oh and it depends on the anime but a lot of them do filler episodes where they purposely don't skip the "three years later". Basically the creator has been writing a series, it got popular and a studio decided to make a show but they produced the episodes faster than the original source material. They don't want to deviate too much with the genuine story so in the middle of the real arc you've got episodes about a driving license until another book is released. Someone else has already mentioned but Death Note is a great beginner suggestion, it's grittier and somewhat more serious well as far as anime goes anyway.

An anime movie I love that I would even put on the level of Ghibli is They Boy and The Beast. It’s fantastic

Moose

Sooo.....Food Wars? This is about an elite worldwide cooking school (in Japan), which welcomes a working class young man who kicks ass. The erotic food scenes are borderline fetish. Lots of moaning and food porn. Long time Anime watcher and this was ingenious and light during pandemic times. #2020

Fernando Rodriguez

This is the funniest dissection of DBZ I’ve ever heard. Piccolo the pervert uncle lmfao 😂

Ashley Parrish

They should watch Castle of Cagliostro. It's a Ghibli Lupin movie directed by Miyazaki.

Derek Zwicker

Death Note

April

I would love to see the guys talk about an episode of Lupin the 3rd, or maybe one of the movies. I think they would like the fact that its just an anime about a jewel thief.

Dave K

I always thought the Mario stars would have tasted like a handful of sour skittles

Jay Gerardi

This is my favorite animation damnation

Chris Robinson

Andrew's a horror fan. Maybe something like Death Note?

rienrien

i own that gokuu hat btw

Thomas Bradtke

I love DBZ, but I know it's completely stupid. Listening to you guys try to figure it out is fantastic.

This is the first Animation Damnation ep that I had to keep pausing, because I was laughing so damn hard that I seriously couldn't breathe. I love Dragon Ball Z, but I love this review so much! WHM perfectly captures how bizarre filler episodes like these are. Keep it up, guys!

Laura Viise

Yeah anything by Satoshi Kon is good, but I love that movie a lot.

Pixel Pusher

For Andrew I would recommend the movie Tokyo Godfathers

Rob Dufford

I've never seen it... we'll see how I do...\

Clifton Jewett

I'd recommend the youtube DBZ Abridged. It's hilarious and actually gives you the skinny on DBZ pretty well.

tmaccurt79

If you think watching Dragonball Z is confusing, try listening to a podcast about it without ever seeing an episode. I am confused.

David gendron

Eric - you should really take the time to watch some of the top-tier Studio Ghibli movies. My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away are all modern classics.

Jeremy Nolen

I'm not a fan of most anime series for a number of reasons, but if you like the Ghibli films (as I do) then you might try Cowboy Bebop and maybe FullMetal Alchemist? Both avoid most of the standard anime tropes and FMA has a pretty interesting plot and setting.

Jeremy Nolen

Anime suggestions, since I have no Twitter... well few that are shorter, tentacle free and I think legally available. Dennou Coil is a nice non-obnoxious kids, sci-fi adventure; Noein is also sci-fi, time travel/parallel words story (it has rather distinct art style); Seirei no Moribito for something fantasy oriented; Flip Flappers, Kyousou Giga and Space Dandy are more focused on art style and what it can achieve but decent plot too; finally Shin Sekai yori and Haibane Renmei to recommend something more serious.

Michal Zinowko

I would buy a Szyszka hat

Racer J

Steve, as an anime fan, I think you pretty much got what DBZ is all about, there's a guy called Goku and he's a Saiyan and he fights all sorts of enemies, which includes androids. Also, to Erick, I don't know why you're thinking about Superman. Goku is the survivor of advanced race of aliens whose planet got destroyed and was sent to Earth where he gains incredible powers. How is that anything like Superman?

GreyLancaster

@Calvin - Oh, Takahata is definitely included in that! - AJ

We Hate Movies

When you say all the Studio Ghibli stuff, does that include Isao Takahata's films too? Because as much as I love Miyazaki's films, Grave of the Fireflies is the best Ghibli film period.

Calvin Lindfors

This is going to be good lol

Kardoor8

Will this ruin my childhood?
